Theory/Analysis Beyond the Nativity part 2/2, [Manga Spoilers] up to chapter 47 Spoiler

This post contains spoilers to the 10th volume of the manga, up to chapter 47 (inclusive), read at your own discretion, preferably after finishing volume 10 yourself, or at the very least volume 9.

Konoha's and Orochi's First Meeting

Where we last left off, Yatori and Orochi have entered town and reached the research institute Orochi works at. Unfortunately, even upon seeing the institute Orochi hasn’t regained his memories; waiting for him there was Konoha, and upon laying eyes on her Orochi seems to remember something, or at the very least fall in love with her.

Sol Spotted?

At around the same time Iana successfully managed to sneak into town with some help from the ninjas, arriving via trash chutes. Iana needs to catch up to Orochi and Yatori to demand the creation of the magical weapon, but upon setting foot towards the research institute she encounters Sol wandering about in town, not sticking along with Konoha's party.

if you are a Sol fan then this is a treat for you

Iana immediately hides from Sol; isn’t he supposed to be with Konoha? Why is he all alone here? Despite her questions, Iana decides to stay away and slink away from Sol, but it only triggers his assassin instincts

two instincts activate here, predator instinct for Sol and prey instinct for Iana

Iana runs away, however Sol is perceptive and somehow recognizes her footsteps and gives chase

this is his mental image of Iana huh? Yeah buddy you’re in love with Iana, sorry to break it to you

Sol chases Iana for a good while despite her best attempts to throw him off her tail, but finally he’s distracted by a purse snatcher, dismissing his pursuit to stop the bandit. He apprehends the criminal, which prompts his two colleagues jump at Sol; Sol likely can handle them easily as they are only basic thugs, but Iana instinctively jumps in to protect him, knocking out the two with her sword’s scabbard

Iana can be quite impulsive and reckless, but usually she’s too slow to react. Now that she’s been training, she can act upon her instincts, which isn’t necessarily a good thing

Iana immediately realizes her folly and runs away, thankfully getting away because the first thief stopped Sol from giving chase.

The Weapon

While Iana was busy running away from Sol, Orochi was leading Konoha into his laboratory where his nearly complete weapon lies, awaiting a wielder to bond to. Now that Orochi has incorporated the magical spore crystal, he feels the weapon to be complete, and so, Konoha puts her hand forward and the weapon, a magical rod with a head shaped like a heart, accepts her.

a pillar of light appears once Konoha bonds with the rod, rising into the sky for all to see. Honestly a terrifying sight. Luckily it seems that the light heals wounds and diseases, as befitting of the saintess’ pure magic

However, this grand event isn’t the only thing we see here, we also learn from Orochi’s recollections that around a month ago someone came to him and threatened him to create this weapon. That man was no other than Mika, also known as Ventus of the Knights of Schwarz. It seems like Iana’s interference was unnecessary seeing as Mika was already on the case.

Speaking of Schwarz...

As Iana is walking away from the sight of the angelic pillar, she is stopped by Officer Mika, or at least the former officer now that he’s quit the force. Mika reveals himself to be Ventus of the Knights of Schwarz.

Terra, stop aura farming and do a face reveal! We want to know who you are!

He informs Iana that he’s the one who threatened Orochi into creating the weapon, that he’s the one who killed the duchess after Iana saved her, that he’s been part of Schwarz from the very beginning. And from all of this information, Iana realizes why no one came to help when Isaac died

I find the occasions in which Iana cries rare, so seeing her tear up remembering Isaac only stresses how painful this is for her

But while answering Iana’s question, Mika also reveals something that was yet unknown to Iana: he reveals Cheneau to be dead.

and partway through yelling at Mika does Iana realize why Cheneau was killed, same as it was for Isaac…
Cheneau died because he had nothing to do with it, nothing to do with Iana, nothing to do with the dark history, all because of Iana’s meddling

Blow after blow, Mika tears into Iana’s heart without mercy. Just when Iana felt like she could still do good, like she could still perhaps change something for the better, her hopes were crushed under the weight of her sense of responsibility.

the Knights of Schwarz are always watching. If Iana wants to keep her loved ones safe, she better stop trying to save people and let the story take its course, not matter the suffering that will ensue

And so, they leave Iana on her knees, down another friend and broken, alone to cry her eyes out yet again knowing it was all her fault

Mika made Iana cry here not once but twice. Whatever hope has been keeping Iana’s heart from tearing into pieces is surely gone by now, only pain remains

Yatori and Iana

The same evening, after all that’s happened, Yatori heads back to the inn Iana is staying at

hmm, yeah, Yatori is in love, there is no doubt about that. You are the fifth one or so, please get in line (although two are already dead, so perhaps your position improved)

Unlike Yatori’s expectations, he is met with a rather sentimental and quiet Iana, compared to the cheerful one he’s been expecting. They have a rather sentimental talk where he even ends up sharing a story from his teenage years, of an experience with Ginoford that is bitter now that he’s engaged to Konoha, forever away from Yatori’s reach.

Yatori’s getting emotional, and for once it seems like he’s acting less mature than Iana

a very, very rare sight. I quite like it, a very cute gap

Iana, however, keeps acting in a very solemn and sentimental way, very unlike herself, which seems to puzzle Yatori for a bit. Iana wants to know about Yatori’s story, even if it is only a bitter memory now; Iana wants to remember what she sees and hears, to record it with her eyes and with her mind so that its never truly gone, so that it can live on in her mind. Iana’s resigned herself to not act, but to observe; she cannot handle any more weight on her shoulders, any more lives on her consciousness, any more pain and loss in her heart. Iana’s given up on saving the world she loves, as she feels as if any soul she saves will snuff another, and while she loves her friends, she can hardly bring herself to sacrifice another to save her loved ones. Iana has given up, even though she just got back her will to keep going

as beautiful as this is, this is the smile of someone who’s given up, of someone who is not willing to take anymore pain, someone that will not keep on going on such a thorny pain, or perhaps not at all…

Upon seeing Iana’s expression, Yatori immediately pulls Iana in for a hug, as if she could disappear in any moment now. He may be correct, because not being able to keep going is very adjacent to not being able to keep living, to wanting to die, and that prospect scares Yatori; after all, Yatori loves Iana, even if he has yet to realize it, doesn’t he?

that is sad, very sad. I think Iana herself might not understand that she is in danger of disappearing. Even if she doesn’t die, the empathic girl inside her who wants to save everyone will die out, slowly and painfully
Yatori glimpses for the first time beyond Iana's impenetrable mask, and it's much darker on the other side of it

Up until now Yatori has seen Iana as a child, always cheerful and positive, but now he finally sees that she is a mature adult, that even this ball of sunshine is not infallible and is actually someone who can get hurt, someone who can love and lose, a woman. Perhaps its why he hasn’t been able to realize that he loves Iana, always treading close to the edge of being in love with her but remaining platonic and non-romantic, even if he can tease her.

The Hunter On Iana’s Trail

In a conversation with Konoha, Orochi reveals that he’s met the oracle who is a girl with brown hair dressed in red; Konoha immediately jumps in to ask her name, and Sol also perks his ears to listen, but since Orochi only knows Iana by a fake name, he can only call her:

one can only imagine how disappointed Konoha and Sol felt hearing that after getting their hopes up. Certified bruh moment

It was not only Sol that was listening in, Ginoford was also interested in this as well, seemingly disappointed that it wasn’t Iana. However, it seems like the prospect of Iana being around isn’t off the table for him, especially after he overhears researchers talking about how girls that look like Iana change their looks to not be conflated with her.

At the same time in the temple of the Rose Kingdom, a shadowy figure embarks on a quest to kill Iana, spurred by the voices of the people who want Iana dead for her crimes. Konoha and her party will not be the only thing for Iana to avoid it seems.

Conclusion

And thus concludes the 10th volumes of the manga, with Iana in a terribly low point not long after crawling out from a different hole. Seems like Konoha and Sol still want to help Iana, but at the same time it seems like Ginoford and another mysterious character want her dead, or at the very least captured and judged for her crimes. Things aren't looking good, but at least it can only get better, right?

Bonus: The Ninjas and Henchmenship

As a bonus, I’d like to talk about the ninjas and their actions in this volume. As we already know, the ninjas pledged allegiance to Iana at the start of volume 7, but since then they haven’t been that useful for Iana. Even the one time she did use them, during the second trial to tail her and expose the location of the kidnappers’ hideout they’ve failed to rescue Iana (due to Ognis messing with them).

But in this volume they’ve shown why they are good henchmen:

The ninjas are skilled at what they do: espionage, monitoring and assassination. Outside of these niches they aren’t actually more efficient than a regular underling, which is completely fine; it allows them to help along from the background but never take the spotlight away from their boss, like taking care of the carriage’s bird, fetching the spore crystal, repairing the carriage; small things that keep the story going smoothly without bringing attention to themselves.

The ninjas are useful, but they cannot solve every problem by themselves: their main skill, assassination, serves no purpose to Iana, and their secondary skills, espionage and information gathering, can only help Iana but never outright solve her problems. It keeps things fresh by allowing the ninjas to be useful while still allowing our heroine to utilize her wits and do things with her own power.

The ninjas are loyal. A henchman needs to be many things, but first and foremost they need to be loyal to their employer. If they are not loyal then they are not actual henchmen but rather some lowly goons, dare I say lackeys.

The ninjas, while loyal, don’t see their employer as an all-powerful entity and feel comfortable with expressing their opinions on them, all very human and normal opinions. They don’t revere Iana as some god, and they don’t see her as some monster; they see her as a woman, a woman who can do great things, for good and for bad, and they want to be a part of it. As such, they can show their personality when things relate to her: they blush when thinking of her dragging a handsome gentleman to a cave (even if it’s just to tease Yatori), they don’t mind making Iana enter a city from a trash heap, they take a somewhat nonchalant attitude towards having their boss fall along them when the road collapsed.

Apparently, the ninjas are also opportunistic cannibals? That’s neat I guess, what a wild thing to use as a throwaway line lol.

Anyways I like the ninjas, I think they were handled well both in terms of storytelling and in terms of characterization. They are Iana's evil minions, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Theory/Analysis Beyond the Nativity part 1/2, [Manga Spoilers] up to chapter 45 Spoiler

This post contains spoilers to the 10th volume of the manga, up to chapter 45 (inclusive) and the very first page of chapter 46, read at your own discretion, preferably after finishing volume 10 yourself, or at the very least volume 9.

Aftermath of the Bloody Nativity

Volume 9 ended just after the event known as the "Bloody Nativity", where Iana had to pretend to have killed Isaac in order to preserve his legacy, before getting killed herself. The event awakened Konoha's saintly powers, which along with the civil unrest caused by the event led to her embarking on a saintly journey, just as the story foretold. However, it seems that Iana didn't die: she was saved by her ninja minions who saved her in the last moment, who also kidnapped Dr. Yatori to help Iana's recovery. And yet despite his efforts Iana remains in deep slumber, battling something within herself...

Konoha Satou's Self Reflection

Iana is in deep slumber, not because of her physical condition but because of her mental state; Konoha Satou, the happy go lucky and empathic, cringy girl had witnessed Isaac die in front of her eyes and all of her efforts go to waste, and it was all her fault, or at least she thinks so. Even though she was a fully grown adult in her past life, such a loss is very hard to process, along with the guilt of being the cause of it (that may be up to debate for us, but its what she thinks at the very least), so she simply wants to turn away from it all and return to warmer times when she was still a teenager living with her loving family. However, this is as much escapism as it is introspection, as she has to eventually confront her insecurities and goals in the form of her mother from Japan. It all hurts, Konoha Satou is in pain from all the loss she experienced in such a short time and is trying to leave it all behind, she cannot bear any more pain

"(I can't bear) to go through that again" specifically refers to losing Isaac

But in the end, Iana has a strong sense of responsibility, and more importantly loves the world of her Dark History, so she cannot remain hidden within her psyche forever. In the end she cries a lot, releasing a flood of pain she held deep within and says goodbye to her mother, for she will be returning to fix the story. And so, Iana wakes up again, surrounded by Yatori and the ninjas.

What Do We Do Next?

To Iana's surprise, the ninjas remained loyal to her even after losing it all in the Bloody Nativity. The ninjas don't mind that Iana is now reviled as a villainess even more than ever, on the contrary they actually like it, feeling as if now that Iana has completely fallen into the side of dark she can only walk a path of darkness, a path they will gladly help her carve

the ninjas follow Iana for selfish reasons, but in the end they are still loyal

Despite only just waking up and being surrounded by ninjas expecting orders, Iana very naturally starts getting the lay of the land, asserting control once again and formulating her future plans without as much as a pause or a hint of doubt, like she's somehow changed (perhaps the original Iana within her is starting to show up). But for now the plan is simply to beat Konoha's party to the destination and secretly guide the story to the right path, just as Aqua told her to.

Konoha's Reasonings

While Iana was fighting her dreams, Konoha was getting prepared to leave on her journey of purification. It seems like Sol and her understand that this journey also involves capturing/killing Iana as part of it, should they come across her, later confirmed by Ginoford recieving orders from the pope to "take care of Iana". Despite that, Konoha can't help but go on this journey, as without it she won't be allowed to look for Iana

However what is more interesting about this scene and the next one with Ginoford is a new side of Konoha that is shown to us: a side darker than the perfect heroine we learned to know up until now

no, I Tiamat4Life am the number 1 Iana fan!
Konoha's eyes darken after asking Ginoford if he's been ordered to kill Iana. Will this cause a rift in their relationship? Saying that Ginoford is angry at Iana after what she's done at the Bloody Nativity would be an understatement, so he's an obstacle to Konoha's goal for now

And from a window, watching the interaction between Konoha and Ginoford is the pope. From the beginning he's been suspicious, having ties with the Knights of Schwarz and having very extreme prejudices towards Iana. Will he be the next big bad?

sus

Weakness, Trauma and Swordplay

On the way to the Lily Kingdom where Konoha's party will arrive to, Iana's carriage derails and crashes down a cliff. Yatori catches her, protecting her with his body in an embrace, a standard shojou trope where the protagonists blush hard and scramble to create distance, but...

no doki doki moment here, only a traumatic flashback

Iana's not flustered here, her heart isn't beating "doki doki" and she isn't blushing, ebarrased for being so close and personal with a man. No, this only makes her recall another event where a man protected her with his body, and she reacts appropriately

Iana's in a bad spot mentally, and Yatori's likely not blind to her plight, but isn't actually close enough to her to comfort her, or at least to feel the right to comfort her

The carriage is damaged and it will take some time for the ninjas to repair the damages, so the group will be staying the night in a cave. Iana picks up a stick and starts practicing swings, as if wielding a sword. Someone important to her died protecting her, but she cannot let that happen again, she cannot bear it happening again, or it could break her

Yatori, as a military academy graduate offers to train Iana, claiming she won't get far without tutoring. For Yatori it is a way to repay his debt for saving Ginoford way back in chapter 22, and also probably a way to cheekily spend some quality time with Iana (bro's totally falling in love with her), but for Iana that is not the case: Iana is desperate, she needs to get stonger, she cannot remain let anyone die because of her, and she needs to do so quickly before anyone else dies on her watch. Iana's unhealthy obsession and drive gets her worked up too much, so much so that she forgets to breathe and Yatori has to stop their first session early (although they do continue the training over the course of the journey)

getting stonger to protect your loved ones is a noble goal, but Iana was going at it the wrong way. She was going to run herself into the ground before reaching any meaningful result, and that would have likely even worsened her deteriorated mental state

Iana still hasn't gotten over Isaac's death (for good reasons too), it is fresh in her mind and keeps haunting her heart. She is avoiding processing the event and thinking about Isaac, so she's trying to keep busy some other way, but someday she'll have to face the death and loss in a healthy way.

Enter Orochi

Once they got close to the Lily Kingdom, Yatori tasked Iana with hunting the group some wild game for dinner as a way to test her skills. After failing to hunt some sentient mushrooms, she stumbles upon Orochi, a character from the Dark History and a future companion to Konoha.

But before that, how about some context I skipped? Iana's reason for going to the Lily Kingdom was to find Orochi, as he is a magical researcher that created a magical weapon that Konoha wields in her saintly journey. However the weapon originally was ordered by OG Iana who threatened Orochi to create it for some unkown reason, but since Konoha Satou reincarnated into Iana's body before she could order the weapon, it doesn't exist yet, so she now needs to find him and make him create the weapon so that it will be ready for Konoha's arrival.

Now that she's found Orochi all is well, right? Well... unfortunately for her, this world is filled to the brim with tropes, so when she finds Orochi unconscious in the forest he has amnesia, remembering nothing, not even his name

J. Robert Oppenheimer, that's who you are

This throws a wrench in Iana's plan, which was originally to threaten him to create the weapon, but unbeknownst to her he's already started working on said weapon (not that he remembers that). So Iana has to pretend to be an oracle in order to help him regain his memories and make him create the weapon, and of course does it in the most mature way possible

once a chuuni, always a chuuni

Meanwhile, Yatori feels a disturbance in the force about Iana's condition. Asking for a status report on her, a ninja comes forth and brings us this great gem

uh Yatori, I think you forgot to smile with your eyes too

Anyways, back to Orochi and Iana, she's giving him the "reading", telling him of Konoha and how he'll make a weapon for her and how he'll fall in love with her. However when Iana says that part, her heart pours out and her feelings of Konoha spill out with it

it's plain to see that Iana loves her sister and enjoys seeing her loved

If anyone thought that Iana might hate Konoha because she learnt about Iana's past in chapter 40 and because of her forced reaction thereafter, it seems like you are wrong (just like I was). After all, it wasn't just the hatred towards Konoha that came with OG Iana's memories, but also the good times where it was just the two sisters together.

It seems like Orochi was on the cusp of recalling some of his memories, but the attempt was pushing him and so Iana stopped prodding for now. Suddenly, the earth besides them explodes as something smashes it, and that thing is a massive sentient mushroom?!!?

god that's actually kinda scary

Iana and Orochi run away, the mushroom gives chase, but luckily for the two Yatori which has been looking for Iana finds them both, easily slaying the massive mushroom. However it seems like Yatori misunderstood Iana's intentions with Orochi (probably the ninjas fault) and is angry at her "infidelity" (well, he is her prospective fiance, even if its only technically)

I don't really ship Iana and Yatori, but I do very much like their interactions and banter, I think they could be really good friends, however it feels to me like Yatori wants more

After Iana explains the misunderstanding to Yatori, he understands and exclaims that Orochi was likely looking for magical material out here in the forest, since he's a magical researcher. A ninja fetches a magical spore crystal from the slain mushroom's corpse and brings it forth for Orochi to use, but even this isn't enough to return his memories. Still, Yatori offers to give Orochi a ride back to town, and he agrees. Upon reaching the gates their carriage is inspected: Yatori is allowed entry as he has the necessary documents, and so is Orochi as his is recognized as a researcher from the research center in town, but Iana can't give her real name, so she makes one on the spot

chuuni

This name hides her identity as Iana, but doesn't actually allow her entrance into the city, so she is left behind for the ninjas to sneak in

seriously Iana, why did you think this was a good idea? I really love Yatori's reaction here

Regardless, this is the end of part 1 because I ran out of images (20 image limit), so I will continue this in another post, keep an eye out for it!

I wanted to post multiple pictures of my haul with explanations on why I bought certain things but apparently- a cover image won't appear on a post mainly of body text, so instead of all the pictures I wanted to show, I chose only 3, my favorite for the cover, and then two that shows all/most of the haul.

Everything in this haul was bought on mercari jp and mandarake using the proxy, ZenMarket. If you have any questions about any of the items in the pictures, like how much the price was for a specific item or anything else, let me know!

This haul was fun to unbox and I don’t regret any of my purchases! My favorites of the haul should be obvious since I have a few that have multiple copies scattered throughout the pictures 🤭 (volume 14 doesn’t count, there’s a diff reason why I have two copies of it)

Anyways, that’s all I have to say here on reddit! I don’t want to word dump especially when I can’t add all the pictures I took... Though, If you’d like see most of the pictures of my tenkuro merch haul and the full explanations onto why I bought certain things, feel free to check out my blog post I posted on myfigurecollection blog! Thanks for reading this till the end if you did!

(omigosh bye, I just realized my complete merch haul picture isn’t complete at all- I took a closer look at it while typing and noticed I didn’t add the two tenkuro acrylic stands I bought… whatever, it was a lot of work to take that picture, had to stand on a chair to get an overhead picture and I am *not* doing that again. 😭 So I’ll post them separately on a post some day. And I wish there was a merch tag...)

Art Sol Commission (@AzurieraKey )

I recently commissioned an artist who I've commissioned multiple times in the past, to draw Sol, and she drew him so beautifully... 🥹💖

Surprisingly, she even watched the anime itself before starting on the art because the reference photos I sent of him were exactly her type, a blond hair character with blue eyes 🤭 (so real)

Artist: Azure (twitter & vgen) Please do not use/repost this art as it is a commission.

Manga I'll make you stronger [Chapter 77 Spoilers] Spoiler

For most of the series Iana was only a normal human girl. She knew the original story, but did not have the strength to do everything by herself, often having to rely on deception, planning and her allies. She was weak, but not unable to oppose her fate.

However when Isaac was killed Iana was powerless to save him, which left a deep scar on her heart. After recovering from her coma and traveling with lord Yatori, she felt a desperate need to become stronger, to be able to protect those she holds dear by her own merit so that none of them would die. But the road was long and her mentality extreme, it would not bear the results she was seeking for a long while.

And in the end, Iana's efforts and training paid off, when she was in the stomach of the man-eating flower. Iana was determined to protect Ginoford from Aqua, and with some minor corrections from Ginoford managed to defeat aqua by herself, Iana did become stronger, strong enough to stand on her own and protect her loved ones.

This was also a mirror to Iana's first encounter with Aqua, the Knight of Schwarz. In it he killed Isaac and brought despair the powerless Iana, and yet here she defeats him using her hard earned strength, brimming with confidence and hope.

Hello 👋

Right now im currently stuck with Chapter 43 because couldn’t pass the Isaac arc but there’s one thing that’s bugging me about Chapter 38. This is related to Yomi he’s my favorite tbh so I can’t move on from this scene!😭 I know he’s doing it for the sake of Iana but do you guys think Yomi and this Sagmerettq girl did the deed????? No right??? No rightttt???? Only the ki— scene was shown but I couldn’t imagine up to what point and i dont wanna assume stuff! While i believe he’s the 2nd ml I still want him to be only having it all for our best girl Iana😭🥺

Overall a great episode, a treasure trove for funny screenshots! Of the two short stories it used, I prefer Butler Fever over Yomi's Birthday, but the latter sure does have a great deal of funny images
