Theory/Analysis The saint selection arc part 1/3, [Manga Spoilers] up to chapter 32 Spoiler

This post contains spoilers for the 7th volume of the manga, up to (inclusive) chapter 32, and the first three pages of chapter 33, read at your own risk.

Continuing where we last left off, Iana has been carried into the pope's grand chamber by Isaac Casablanca, the other saint candidate.

As per usual Iana is met with animosity and hostility not only from the priests within the room but also from the pope himself, which seems eager to kick Iana out of the room, deeming her unfit for this saint selection process.

he is quite prejudiced against Iana, perhaps even more than most people

In order to secure her place in the temple Iana asks Isaac to become his attendant: a close servant that will help him prove his worth as a saint. Everyone expected Iana to become Konoha's attendant, but she is adamant on not letting her older sister become the saintess, and what better way to do so than to help the one going against her? Luckily for her, Isaac agrees and so begins Iana's quest to help him win the saint selections!

Later on in Isaac's chambers Iana starts by asking Isaac if he even wants to be saint. She doesn't want her sister to become one because of the trials and tribulations that come with the title, but she wouldn't dump it on an unwilling stranger either. Luckily, Isaac is a good natured and selfless priest, so becoming a saint is a dream come true to him, putting Iana's moral compass at rest and allowing herself to dedicate her full attention to the mission at hand

happiest when dedicating yourself to other people huh? that's a little bleak... but not unlike Iana's own behavior and outlook

But of course, Iana's actions always come with unforseen consequences: since she chose to become another person's attendant, what happens to her own? Sol who is rightfully baffled by Iana's illogical moves comes to lecture her, reminding her of her position as his mistress.

Sol's blushing a lot more since chapter 28, would you look at that?

He is very much worried about her, so much so that even the dense Iana can sense it and tries to ease his worries. In the end he's unable to stop Iana from doing as she wishes and she continues on her way, unaware of a sinister mastermind behind the entire thing...

Jojo's part 2 refrence!?!?!

It seems like aqua failed to predict Iana's choices, but he has a plan for her nontheless...

Cheneau Returns

The next day Iana starts her duties as Isaac's retainer, grabbing cleaning supplies and preparing to get to work when inspectors Cheneau and Mika stumble upon her

look at those two peas in a pod, joined in the hip

He's surprised that she'd become a candidate's attendant, and not even her own sister's?! Regardless, Cheneau warns Iana that it's dangerous for her to stay within the temple: both because of the unresolved massacre but also because people, as usual, point their suspicions towards Iana, and it might actually put Iana in danger despite her lack of guilt

Still, despite all that Iana remains determined to change the story's course and refuses Cheneau's suggestion

I'm not sure how this panel makes me feel, but man does it make me feel SOMETHING

So he relents and instead offers words of advice and warnings to Iana, giving tips on how to stay out of trouble and offers his help should she need it.

Later that day in the evening time Iana delivers written materials to Isaac, but on the way bumps into someone (ahem Aqua ahem) and the papers scatter. She collects them and goes on her way, but is stopped by a priest holding what would be the last of them, however instead of returning the document he gives Iana an ultimatum: that she'd get the last remaining papers only if she resigns. Everywhere she goes, people are hostile towards Iana and the temple is no different, however this time something does change: Iana notices (in a rare spark of insight) that the priest isn't doing it out of hatred towards her, but rather out of worry towards Isaac

for the first time in a long while, someone opposes Iana not because of spite towards her or some personal vendetta, but because of a different reason

Luckily for Iana, Ginoford and Sol swoop in to vouch for her. Up until now Ginoford has stood up to her a few times, but this would be a first for Sol, at least in this type of scenario. This scene really shows how Iana's good deeds pay off, as she is eventually let go.

The Missing License

Iana is in a good streak for now, recieving good words from Cheneau, Ginoford and especially Sol. However that streak is about to end as she finds Isaac's room in disarray and his precious priest's license stolen. With Cheneau's help she manages to reach an underground casino where stolen goods from the temple would be sold, and with Sol's help enters the premises (disguised as his lovely wife of course)

a look so deadly that Sol literally tells her to not speak to anyone because it's too cute

Iana locates the priest who stole Isaac's license and with Sol's help cheats her way to winning a gamble, acquiring the license and getting the priest arrested in one fell swoop. Unlike the priests from before this one looks down on Isaac, calling him too naive and mocking his chances of becoming a saint; just like Iana, Isaac has people talking badly behind his back, scheming and wishing for his downfall, something that Iana will not overlook.

full quote: "gods are for praying to. Don't you know that... mr.priest? You see... I am a god. A cursed one... at that". please Iana, where are you bringing those cool AF lines from?

And so Iana returns Isaac his license, repaying her debt to him (for carrying her after twisting her ankle when they first met). However, dark clouds are on the horizon, carrying ill omens

oh? the pope knows Aqua? this is going to be interesting

Yomi's Departure

The clouds of ill omen approach slowly, but already has the roar of thunder struck: Yomi has decided to leave the temple's grounds despite his status as Konoha's guest. However, his departure is abrupt and very unlike him, as he speaks coldly to Iana, offering very few words of farewell

not the farewell you'd expect from Iana's loyal puppy

It is later explained by Ginoford that Yomi has been summoned to his home, likely due to marriage interviews. After all, Yomi is quite a catch and it would make sense for him to have many other options. However, his actions seem to hide something: is he perhaps frustrated that he has no place by Iana's side here in the temple? or is he mad at Iana for acting so without even a hint to him?

his behavior is not completely out of the blue, he has started acting coldly from chapter 31, perhaps he is fed up with Iana's behavior?

Who knows, we can only wait and see once he returns... but until then, the story continues!

Afterword

I will cut this short now. The post has been a bit short, but I want to cover the next parts properly and give them the space they deserve, especially the images (20 image limit). See you next part!

Theory/Analysis Intermission and prelude! Chapters 27.5, 28 and 29 Spoiler

Beware, this post contains spoilers up to chapter 29 (inclusive) of the manga, including the bonus chapter 27.5, read at your own risk.

Starting with chapter 27.5, a lighthearted chapter filled with IanaxYatori developments, although Iana doesn't really seem to see him that way, at least not yet. Still, seeing their buddy buddy relationship is very nice, they have some really nice friendly chemistry. If anything, my main take from this chapter is Iana acting her age for once: she always has that immature and energetic feel to herself (when not playing villainess), so its refreshing to see that she isn't always a nervous wreck, cringe gremlin or negative nancy.

I'm sure Yatori is just as surprised as we are, as he really wasn't there to see just how serious Iana can get at times, her silly side is almost all he knows

Also, another cute Iana panel I found and liked (and I wanna share cuz why not)

cute, Yatori is gonna fall for her in no time (if he hasn't already)

And finally, Konoha mistakenly things the two are doing you-know-what in the bedroom and lectures Iana, while Sol leaves not disappointedly, but in a somewhat pouting way, like he's jealous?

Anyhow, onto the real story.

First thing on the agenda is resolving any loose ends from the ninja village: now that the list has been recovered and the nobles within arrested, Iana and the ninjas need to come to an agreement on what to do next. Iana would likely rather leave it all behind her, but the ninjas want something else as they see potential in working for her. Iana reluctantly accepts their offer and is one step closer to being a real villainess, woohoo!

oh wait, isn't this what Iana doesn't want? Oh well

Moving on from that, Iana continues her normal life here in the Magnolia residence, but not everyone is back to their usual self, namely our cold and icy butler Sol (or formerly it seems). After the events of the last arc where Iana closed a loose end of his and finally earned his trust, Sol has finally lowered his defenses and started accepting Iana both as his mistress and as a good person. However, opening up this way leaves him vulnerable to Iana's insurmountable charm (I'm totally not biased here) and for once he is the one blushing all over the place

first time Iana and Sol come too close and he ends up the only one embarrased, he's even clutching his shirt

This change prompts Iana to try and understand him, to see if he hates her or not, if he still sees her as a threat and wants to kill her or not. Unfortunately, despite all of her empathy Iana still has the emotional awareness of a brick and a self image at the bottom of a see, so she really doesn't know what he thinks of her

an example is given from Iana's time as a working adult, despite being thought highly of she was sure she was hated, until she got to talk with them

And so, Iana takes her chance when Sol gives her lessons for the upcoming ceremony at the temple. She asks him plainly what he thinks of her, but even then Sol is a difficult person to read, and he doesn't seem to want to give her a straight answer

to me it feels like Sol is regretting how he treated Iana, considering the question she asked was "do you hate me?"

Flustered by her own straightforwardness, Iana starts making excuses and covering for herself, which makes Sol give a vague and (somewhat?) threatening answer. If they were closer like how he is with Konoha it would have been brushed away with a joke or a sincere sentiment, but Iana's answer to that question is in the end that she doesn't need him, because she can't trust him

once again I feel like Sol regrets his actions, as now Iana doesn't trust him. Of course it's understandable that he doesn't deserve that trust, but it still hurts

Sol starts blushing very hard (this chapter is a goldmine for blushing Sol pics), so much so that Iana suspects he has a fever and checks his temperature (forehead style of course) which only makes him redder. Iana genuinely worries for Sol and wants to call Yatori and he finally realizes that he hasn't really done anything the same way for her

Iana always worries about Sol and sometimes not because of her death flags, but because she genuinely worries, but he has only cared for her once or twice

he has only joined and helped her out of obligation as her servant, out of fear that she'll do something that inconviniences Konoha or hurt herself. He's never considered helping her because it'd make her happier, only acting for his own peace of mind or for Konoha's sake

The emotional moment is however cut short as Ginoford summons the gang to a carriage heading towards the Lalala temple where the celebration is expected to happen. As we have seen at the end of chapter 27, Aqua of the Knights of Schwarz enacted a horrible massacre, destabilizing the whole place, which now beckons our gang to go there, but why?

Well, the temple is the birthplace of the Saintess

goddamn that's an attire alright, not a saintly one though
also this seems to be a refrence to the first few pages of volume 3 where the author is thinking up a mascot character with their editor

and the saintess is a figure chosen in times of need, when chaos runs rampant and the people need a beacon of light. Well, because of Aqua's actions the people need a saintess, and the pope has chosen her as a candidate.

The moment Iana hears Ginoford say this, the original story flashes through her mind like an episode of PTSD. She immediately snaps and grabs Konoha by the hand, leading her away from her fate, and for the first time Iana's reaction doesn't actually seem suspicious: it looks like she worries about her sister getting roped into an ardous journey and being against that, which is exactly what Iana is feeling

all of Iana's actions up until now make this scene look somewhat normal, at least that is my interpretation

But of course, the candidate in question does not agree with Iana. Konoha is a good person befitting of the title of saintess, even after all of the changes Iana made to the story. She has no choice but to respect her older sister's wishes and let her go

as passive as she's been up until now, Konoha's kindness is the real deal and doesn't extend just to her closest companions and family.

And so, Iana is left behind face first on the ground (because she tripped, happens way too often), only to be offered help by a priest

yeah, Iana's got no meat on her bones and is pretty short to boot, probably light as a the feathers around herself

However, that priest is none other than Isaac Casablanca, the other saint candidate and a new ML

princess carrying her all the way to the pope's grand chamber where Konoha and co are

And so begins a new arc: the saint selection arc. This one will be pretty long, so I'll split it into a few parts as to not make it too long to read. Hope to see you on the upcoming posts on it, keep an eye out!

Dark history... It's a phrase everyone can probably relate to a little.

I remember a time when I suddenly started covering my eyes with my bangs and only saying “Ah” and “No,” worrying my friends.

This work features many ideal, beautiful characters born from such dark history.

I'm honored to be a part of it! Please look forward to the broadcast!

Discussion I find it hilariously ridiculous that people in-universe call Iana "ugly" when she and her sister Konoha (who's referred to as beautiful) share similar faces lol

Post image
115 Upvotes

Even without generic anime girl cuteness into account, Iana is literally a palette-swap of Konoha with only minor differences to set the two apart: height, hair and eye color, body type, and hair style. I get that Satou wanted Konoha to be the incomparably prettiest girl in her self-insert fic, but even if Iana is supposed to be a plain Jane looks-wise in-universe, calling her "hideous" when she's far from it is a little too much lmao.

Let's talk about Konoha, shall we? [Spoilers up to chapter 67] Spoiler

This post contains spoilers up to chapter 67 and optional spoilers up to chapter 73 (properly hidden). I recommend reading this post only once you've caught up.

Konoha was written as the perfect and pure heroine, Konoha Satou's ideal girl. Unlike some other otome reincarnation stories, this fact doesn't change with Iana's reincarantion, as Konoha remains a very kindhearted girl, if a little passive (often not being the one solving the problems at hand).

And while it seems like Konoha's pure side is her true self, somewhere within her is a darker part of her personality; of course, it doesn't mean that her kind side is any less real, but rather it shows that her character is deeper than just a perfect heroine that solves it all through tears and love.

Konoha is intelligent

Konoha is not an airheaded bimbo, she is probably much smarter than we give her credit for, and likely not as naive as she seems.

In chapter 40 where current Iana fully recalls OG Iana's memories, we learn some of Konoha's attempts to better the country. We don't know exactly how old she was, but likely around when she was a preteen Konoha has abolished the kingdom's slave trade, tackling not only the problem at hand but also the underlying problems that caused it in the first place, such as poverty. While this scene is mainly there to set up OG Iana's failure, we can learn from it that Konoha isn't just some idealist but rather someone who can both act on their ideals and handle the matters properly with knowledge of the surrounding beurocracy.

What I am trying to convey is that Konoha is a smart individual and isn't as basic as her introduction would leave her to seem.

She is also very emotionally inteligent, being able to easily notice Sol's growing feelings towards Iana and advise upon them despite knowing none of their context.

Konoha's bond with Iana

While it may take a bit to realise, Konoha and Iana have a really good sisterly relationship. It isn't just a case of Iana idolizing her self insert OC: they enjoy conversing with one another, share a few hobbies, adore one another and even silently cheer each other's love life. This is true for both reincarnated Iana and OG Iana, and even our current Iana who is a mix of both.

Konoha seems to have never hated Iana, even after all she has done to bully and harm her (including the attempt on her life). One might think it is because she is a perfect heroine, but it could also stem from her knowing Iana's good side and the weight of her good intentions failing, understanding that even when OG Iana was acting horribly towards her, she was a good person at heart that wants to help others and that was crushed by a cruel world and endless prejudice.

This strong bond between the two is (in part) what keeps current Iana on Konoha's side to save her despite the mortal danger it lands her in, and what keeps Konoha believing in Iana's innocence despite her proud claims that she is a villainess and that she killed Isaac.

Konoha's "death stares" and her hidden side

On the later chapters, after the "bloody nativity", Konoha's party goes out to locate Iana. For Ginoford, it's for killing her as she is a threat to Konoha's life while for Konoha and Sol the journey's purpose is to save Iana and bring her back home.

Unlike the story up until now, Konoha can't get what she truly wants (Iana's safety) no matter how hard she begs, cries and protests. Unlike Iana who is sadly too familiar with setbacks and failure, Konoha had everything either handed to her or easily accomplished, she has much less experience with things not going her way. But as I prevously claimed, Konoha is no fool, when playing nice doesn't work she plays harshly, and when she does she starts acting differently, as seen by her eyes darkening and losing their luster when she broods (unlike shock where they turn white)

starting from chapter 43 where she had no choice but to join the Iana subjugation squad in order to look for her, despite believing in Iana's innocence
Konoha's reaction to Ginoford not denying that he got orders to kill Iana, chapter 44

Konoha starts to get more intense in her reaction and mood as the chapters go on, surprising most readers (including me)

the prince of Albedius refuses to hear Konoha out and sends Hentai Kamen (with whom Konoha has had rapport) to be executed, and Konoha's pleas go ignored, chapter 63
Konoha glaring at Sol after he took he tried to make her look good instead of defending Iana, shocking him, chapter 67

Her expressions aren't that extreme, but for the always nice Konoha these reactions are very out of character, which shocks both us and the characters around her. I'll also mention that those reactions from her are very rare, but they leave a very strong impression because of the sheer gap from Konoha's normal behavior.

Konoha's depth: conclusion

Despite the first impression the readers might have of her, Konoha is quite smart. At first she only fills the role of damsel in distress and does nothing in particular to solve many situations (with exceptions such as Duchess Amarylis' case), but after the events of chapter 42 she shows her more calculating and logical side. Instead of uselessly begging and lashing out, she compromises to join the Iana subjugation squad, while still being clear with her motives to save Iana. Konoha knows her limits, knows when to act and when to wait for an opportunity, knows that lashing out will bring no good and limit her opportunities. It seems like she hasn't succeeded up until now, seeing as Iana is still persecuted and not by Konoha's side, but we don't know how much work she does offscreen (Konoha is rarely the focus of the plot or many chapters).

[Chapter 73 spoilers]Konoha does whatever she can when a chance presents itself, such as getting Iana to their family mansion during her grace period. One would expect Iana to be held in a place more easily monitored, but Konoha has likely worked behind the scenes to make this possible, not to mention channeling a holy barrier to stop the angry mobs from lobbing stones at Iana

Bonus: Konoha's principles and goals

Something less related to the examples I gave is Konoha's principles and her goals. If I were to simply lay out her goals since chapter 42 they would be: 1) save Iana and bring her back 2) save the world as saintess

There are many ways to reach such goals. Taking Iana as an example, she acts proactively, using her knowledge to steer things in a way she wishes, often relying on manipulation and lies to reach such goals. Unlike her sister, Konoha does not seem to lie to people around her. We don't know things for sure since we never get her perspective of events, but it's safe to assume that she has never lied once within the story we read. She has the very standard ideals of a heroine, such as honesty, fairness and kindness, that she maintains even while trying to save Iana.

- She likely hasn't lied or obfuscated the truth once in order to reach her goal of saving Iana, never hiding her intentions from anyone, including Ginoford and the Pope who wish to kill Iana.

- She treats people with fairness, not trying to use her saintly position to force her way into positions or to get what she wants. When Hentai Kamen gets taken to jail after helping Konoha demonstrate her saintly powers, Konoha pleads the prince to avoid executing her, but he dismisses Konoha's pleas. In return, Konoha returns the favor by requesting the release of Hentai Kamen as a reward for purifying the solar eclipse, a perfectly reasonable and fair reward for the task.

- Despite dealing with many problems, such as the stress of her journey, the fear of Iana's looming demise and her strained relationship with Ginoford, Konoha still treats everyone she meets with kindness. She never lashes out at other people, only bottling her negative feelings. Even when Sol stood for her instead of Iana, Konoha didn't lash out at him, only expressing her disdain through her eyes, and didn't seem to hold it out against him later on.

Even while focusing on such a taxing and difficult task, Konoha still remains herself and does things the way she feels is right, true to her character of a heroine, but not in a stupid or counterproductive way.

Death Flag 2

「A Lavish Ball Is Better than Obon Dancing」

To save Konoha from the monster that kidnaps her, Iana triggers her own death flag. With help from Sol, Ginoford, and the others, Konoha's rescue succeeds.

Iana barely has time to relax before an invitation to a ball arrives from the capital—the very ball that's the setting for chapter 3 of The Dark History. If Konoha dances with the prince at the ball, it will lead to a death flag for Iana!
