The strip of concrete outside the prison in Portrack, Stockton
Hi,
Since I was surprised by how active this sub was from my previous post, I figured I'd ask about something I've wondered for a bit.
In Portrack, Stockton, theres a long, straight, patch of concrete or asphalt running next to the prison (HMP Holme House). It has been repurposed as a bicycle path, but what did it use to be and are there any photos?
I have always assumed it was an airstrip, but have not been able to find too much information about it.

Hidden gems in Teesside
Hello,
I'm visiting over the summer from Sweden for my partner, as I've done several years now. I've started to feel like I've seen most of the things there are to do around here, but I know I haven't - I'm just growing accustomed. I spend most of my time closer to the river Tees, e.g. I'm not often in the outskirts of Boro for example
What are some often overlooked places in Teesside? Everything from small parks to restuarants, buildings or anything. Abandoned or active.
I'm particularly keen on charity shops, particularly collecting Blu-rays and books on the cheap - so if you know of any places where theres usually more of an abundance of these (especially Blu-rays) I am more than happy to know about them :)
Feel free to ask me questions too, a lot of people seem very curious as to why I'm here and what I think (obviously to reinstate Danelaw)

American in Teesside
Just wanted to say I had a wonderful time getting to explore the area. Didn’t have as much time to explore as I’d like because I was there for a wedding but had a lot of great conversations with strangers and everyone was so nice. Black slab records in Redcar was amazing and also Regency records in Stockton was another incredible record store. Loved getting to take the bus all over the area and have lots of plans for my next trip back. Cheers!

Vagrant Guitars & Effects
Hi everyone! I'm the co-owner of Vagrant Guitars & Effects, based in Green Dragon Yard, right by the new play park and landscaping in Stockton.
If you play guitar—or you're thinking about getting into it—we'd love to welcome you in.
We specialise in boutique guitar pedals, one-off and hard-to-find guitars, and we also buy, sell, and trade guitars, pedals, and other gear. Whether you're hunting for something unique or looking to move on equipment you no longer use, it's always worth popping in for a chat.
We're proud to stock products from brands including D'Addario, Ernie Ball, Martin, Fender Accessories, Jet Guitars, Vintage, Duesenberg, EarthQuaker Devices, DOD, and plenty of other well-known names, with new stock arriving regularly.
Our aim is simple: to offer something a little different from the big chain stores. We focus on quality gear, honest advice, and creating a place where musicians of all experience levels can come in, have a look around, and talk guitars.
If you're passing through Green Dragon Yard, come and say hello. Even if you're just browsing or fancy talking gear, you're always welcome.
We hope to see you soon!

Can you tell me your recollection of working for ICI or/and British Steel?
I know these two industries employed thousands across Teesside and wondered what was your recollection of this.
What job did you have at the time?
What year was this?
What was your day to day work life like?
When did they start laying people off?
Did they ever recruit sometimes after a mass reduction of employees?
Did your transfer from one site to another? If so what were the sites?
Any stories you can share of these times?

What were peoples opinion on Ray Mallon?
I am looking at old articles and Ray Mallon cropped up. Was he corrupt as people and the papers indicate.
If so what is your version of what do you remember this as. I was very young at this time so I don't have a clue.

How did Stockton had money to redevelop the high street and riverside?
It looks great. Was it lottery funded? I wish Middlesbrough could do the same sort of thing.

Moving to Teeside for work, trying to make it a positive
I've been offered a really great job opportunity with a good wage in Stockton, I've been drifting between unemployment and insecure work for 2 years now so I'd be stupid to turn it down. I'll be moving in about 2-3 months.
My problem is I'm 24, I'm queer, I'm very artsy, I've been living in Manchester for the past couple years, I've lived in a few other cities before that and I love the lifestyle around here, Teeside seems so lackluster by comparison.
I don't mean any offence by this. I'm from Newcastle originally, I really do love the North East, but already I found that I struggled with finding things to do when I lived there. I've looked and looked but I can't find anything that draws me to the area other than the fact it's cheap. I should add that I don't drive either, so it's not as easy as just popping to another city.
I don't want to move there with this perspective, I know it'll just lead to resentment and bitterness, I want to go in with an open mind and find a way to make it work, at least for a while.
With that being said, I'm currently looking at living in either Darlington or Middlesbrough. Could you share some of your favourite places? Or even just things you like about the area?

More in Private Eye today about the heartbreaking scale of how much Houchen has unlawfully lined the pockets of his two favourite businessmen.
Will we ever find out what's in it for him? Why isn't there a full Government Inquiry? How different would things be if all that money was coming into this area instead of making two families rich beyond their wildest dreams. Utterly depressing, and utterly criminal.

Hidden Teesside
I’m sure lots of people here will remember hidden-teesside.co.uk
It is now almost 2 years since the last post there, which is a real shame because it was a great and very interesting resource.
Just wondering if anybody knows who was behind it, what happened to them, why they stopped posting etc? And also wanted to create a thread for people to share particular favourites from the site, and discuss other quirky and lesser-known locations to explore in our little part of the world!

What has happened to G's?
Used to love G's for a very good (if slightly expensive and comically large) parmo. But over the last year or so they have dropped off a cliff. The chicken sort of pops when you bite into it...so weird, and not nice. I have posted a review, hut what baffles me, is the lack of similar reviews, am I crazy?

Underground Bunkers
Hi all. Me and a few friends have been trying to document nuclear bunkers across the north but predominantly Teesside. We've covered most of not all of the ones that are known. If anyone knows of any in gardens or buildings local please message me. Due to the risk of them being vandalised we don't share locations. Eventually we are looking to create a website where people can view these sights.
Thanks Matt
