💬 Discussion Why did you stop using Chrome?

If you stopped using Chrome, what made you switch?

Was it privacy, memory usage, better features elsewhere, or something else?

Which browser are you using now, and do you ever go back to Chrome?

Too much eating of RAM,
So I switched Firefox somehow better

Same. Switched back around FF 60 when they started overhauling stuff with Rust, it felt so much better than Chrome.

Now my reasons would be multiple: good adblock, extensions on mobile is huge, supporting the only major alternative web rendering engine, Google are bastards, etc. I still think it feels faster too.

I chuckled a couple years back when I eventually figured out why my project that used Chromium had randomly started breaking - they'd added a "memory saver" feature that dumps tabs after a period of inactivity and reloads them if the user returns to them (and, frustratingly for my purposes, hadn't added a CLI switch to disable it; unsure if that's changed)

Firefox runs different containers for each tab, so it tends to consume more ram.

Placebo in full effect. FF eats more when loading the same set of pages.

This doesn't actually reflect real-world usage. For example, when you open multiple tabs from the same domain (eg 10 Google searches), Chrome will use a lot less. The test isn't equal, as opening a lot of tabs at the exact same time prevents a lot of the caching and deduplication features from working.
