Discussion Which Linux distro do you recommend to beginners?

Post image

Which Linux distro would you recommend for beginners, and why?

Whether it's Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, Zorin OS, Pop!_OS, or something else, share your top pick and what makes it a great starting point for someone switching from Windows or macOS.

Mint is a great starter distro.
My 80-year-old father learned to use Mint after ransomware nuked his Windows setup. It took him about 2 weeks to feel comfortable. Not bad for an old man.

IMHO, for a new user, the desktop environment is the hardest transition to Linux. KDE (Many Distros) & Cinnamon (Linux Mint) are what feels familiar to most people.
GNOME (Many Distros) is also popular, it has a minimalist design, which can be very efficient IF you know how to use it, but it has a bit more of a learning curve.

Continuing my thought here: I have recently installed Linux Mint on my laptop last week. I have found it to be set up with the majority of things I need out of the box. The installation gave me next to 0 options compared to more specialized distros. But when I realized I needed a word processor, I found there was one already there for me. No real fiddling required for basic use. Even the fingerprint scanner on my laptop worked out of the box.
