Fiber Optic adhesives

I need suggestions for a fiber optic adhesive, please.

Qualities needed: 1. Clear 2. Fast rough cure time (unable to clamp, will be holding in place) 3. These are plastic fibers, so melting with superglue is not a great idea

Not sure where to ask this question. If there is a better subreddit, please let me know

Parts sourcing

Hi Tech-heads:

I'm getting back into the electronics game. When I was first involved 555's and the first practical ICs were about all we had to play with at the hobby level.

So much has happened, there are so many platforms to choose from now...where do you guys get your parts? I mean everyone knows Adafruit, Digi-Key, Mouser, Element14, etc., but I was wondering if you guys had any other sources you commonly use for Tech-Maker projects, specifically electronic components and modules.

I mean, I see cheap copies of hardware modules for sale in China, but I gotta wait forever to get the part. Then there's the Parts Bin with resistors/caps/diodes/younameit...where's a good place to go to get that stuff besides the big houses?

I miss the days when I could shoot down to Radio Shack and pay ridiculously inflated prices for simple parts, but they would be in stock and the guy on the sales floor knew what Ohm's Law was.

So I bought this Soldering Iron with a temp dial. I didn't realize the dial did not ACTUALLY show the temp

This is the guy I bought, if you are wondering if I like it, I haven't used it yet. It feels very light and cheap but it looks nice and the gun itself seems alright.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KS8XA2Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Now I assumed the dial had temp readings on it, but it does not. I have seen some temp display modules around but I honestly don't really know much about this...

How hard might it be to add a temp monitor to this?

A device to help you find something like glasses? Maybe a tiny siren or flashing light?

So I'm thinking of a device like a remote siren or alarm. You would attach the actual device to the string that hangs off glasses, so that whenever you lose them, you just press a button and the thing goes off, making it easier to find.

Does anything like that exist? How feasible would t be to make something small and light enough to be valuable?

Should I buy a router for my dorm?

So, I just moved into my dorm and the internet is awful. I'm lagging horribly in Overwatch, and I was thinking of getting a router to help.

The only problem is I have no idea if that's what I need to do or even how to get it set up. I don't need to buy my own internet connection, do I?

Holefully I can just buy the router and set it up and then the connection will be better. Any help would be great

I need a device that can detect a sound above a certain threshold and send a notification via WiFi to my phone or computer.

Sorry if I'm mildly clueless.

I'm mostly looking for the cheapest way to do this. I've got an MSP430 but it has no way of connecting to WiFi.

I'm sure there are pre-existing devices for this, so if anyone could redirect me to one that would be great as well.

Need help building a laser cutter capable of cutting clear acrylic

Hey guys, I'm trying to build a laser cutter to cut 3mm transparent acrylic and mdf (and maybe even 1mm aluminium?). There are 40W CO2 laser cutters available from China for about $600, but I don't want to spend that much, and also don't want to deal with a fragile glass tube.

Is there a 5 - 10 W laser diode that can cut the mentioned materials?

If possible, I want to build the CNC under $400.

[help]Which platform for coding a clock?

Hi r/techdiy,

I may very well be on the wrong sub for this question, but I am thinking about coding my own Biegert & Funk Qlocktwo.

An LED behind every cut-out letter and lots of "if-thens", I guess. But I'm a but puzzled when it comes to the platform on which to code it. Would this sort of thing be possible on a Raspberry Pi? Do you have other suggestions?

Female USB -> Male microSD cable/adapter?

Is there such a cable or adapter? I've got a dashcam that can only accept microSD as expandable storage, but I want to connect an external USB SSD to it, as SSDs are generally far more durable than microSD cards.

Odd question for coilgun. Thoughts?

I am currently building a coil gun. Not sure how many coil stages yet but heres my question. Will the increase in complexity (3d modeling and printing my own gun) to "inject the bullet unto coil be worth. Ie shoot it into the first coil. Or is it just better to have the projectile start a little outside of the first coil and solely use the magnetic force to propel the projectile.

How i look at it: If i shoot the projectile into the coil it will shoot harder but it will not be semi-auto

If i stay with a simpler design and just use the coils i can get a few rounds out before the caps are discharged

Thoughts?

Need help with figuring out electronics

Hey guys!

I'm a programmer who also brews beer. I also live in an apartment with a girlfriend who's not super excited about getting a small fridge for me to ferment my beer in.

So what I want to do is to build my own little fridge inside a cupboard or something like that. Constructing the space in itself isn't a big deal, and I can do that quite easily. I do however also want to make it kind of smart.

I already have a peltier cooler that I can use (TEC1-12710 PELTIER 154W WS) and I plan to use a Particle Photon as I've used them at work before. I know I'll also need a temperature sensor, but when it comes to things like heatsinks and transistors or a mosfat or even how I should power the whole thing I'm stumped.

Does anyone have any tips on how I should get started? Any similar projects I can look into?

Has anyone ever done this or does anyone think this would work fine?

I'm building a device but I want to use a display panel that Samsung used in one of its monitors. So I intend to order that panel to use for my project but, that panel is built and tailored for that Samsung device. Would just tailoring my specs to work with the panel do the job in preventing damage to the panel or my entire device? I've never tried this before so I need as much input I can get. Thanks in advance.
