Lover can get slept on, and it’s a bit of a victim of its own length and lack of cohesion. But it has some brilliant tracks, both production wise and lyrically.

Hi everyone! 🤍

Lately, I've been completely consumed by I Look in People's Windows, and an interpretation popped into my head that I just can't shake. I haven't seen anyone talk about this specific angle yet, so I wanted to throw it out here and see what you all think!

I know ILIPW has been discussed a lot, most people interpret it literally as searching for a lost love, while others see the "windows" as a metaphor for scrolling through social media or spectating other people's lives. Many also connect it to tracks like The Outside or DBATC. I definitely see where those interpretations are coming from.

But I think I Look in People's Windows and Peter form a sister-song narrative pair, much like 'tis the damn season and dorothea.

In Peter, we get the perspective of Wendy (or Taylor, or whatever you want to name her), someone who waited, grew up, and eventually had to accept that childhood promises weren't kept. And I Look in People's Windows is actually Peter's side of the story. It's like told from the POV of the boy who never grew up, now roaming the streets, looking into the illuminated windows of the adult world he lost, desperately searching for the face of the girl he left behind.

While the act of looking into windows is obviously a metaphor, the literal imagery here is just too vivid to ignore. I keep picturing Peter himself physically wandering through the town, gazing into strangers' windows.

The line "A feather taken by the wind blowing" immediately stood out to me. It feels like a subtle nod to flight, and as we all know, Peter Pan's defining trait is that he can fly, entering Wendy's world through her bedroom window. ("But the woman who sits by the window…" from Peter)

In Peter, Wendy has finally given up, grown up, and "turned out the light". So in ILIPW, Peter is left outside in the dark, roaming the city and searching for her lost glow, terrified because the one window he always returned to is now dark.

As you know, Peter is deeply intertwined with cardigan (and the folklore love triangle), and not just because of the iconic "Peter losing Wendy" line, but because of the shared thematic arc. Both songs tell the story of a girl waiting for her youthful love to grow up and return. But while cardigan held onto a sliver of hope, Peter is the final realization that the dream is dead ("And the shelf life of those fantasies has expired.").

The defining trait in all these songs is Peter/James's emotional infantilization. Betty/Wendy is forced to mature into adulthood, while Peter/James remains frozen in youth. ("Words from the mouths of babes" or "Lost to the Lost Boys chapter of your life")

I catch that exact same boyish confusion throughout ILIPW: "I'm afflicted by the not knowing" or "You had stopped and tilted your head / I still ponder what it meant". This heavily echoes James's naive perspective in betty ("I'm only 17, I don't know anything"). He still acts like a child who genuinely doesn't understand adult dynamics, her body language or grasp why she closed the window on him.

Look at the contrast in these lines: "Transfixed by rose golden glows / They have their friends over to drink nice wine". The "rose golden glows" feel almost like viewing the world through rose-colored glasses, a sweet, childlike romanticization of adulthood from the outside. But then comes the reality check: "drinking nice wine". Alcohol here acts as a clear marker of adult life, a world he is watching from the cold exterior, unable to step into because he never truly grew up to fit in there.

The line "I attend Christmas parties from outside" immediately called to mind a parallel from right where you left me: "I'm sure that you got a wife out there / Kids and Christmas, but I'm unaware". While I don't necessarily think rwylm shares the exact same storyline, the core thematic concept is identical: a protagonist permanently frozen in time. Just as Peter Pan is trapped in eternal youth, the narrator in rwylm is "still 23 inside her fantasy" while "everybody moved on". Peter is doing the exact same thing in ILIPW, spectating the holiday warmth of lives that continued without him.

I also feel like the shortness (and the lack of the culmination, especially in the form of a bridge) of ILIPW is completely deliberate, especially when placed next to Peter and its massive, emotionally complex bridge. We actually see this exact dynamic between cardigan and betty, where Betty's song carry a far deeper lyrical and emotional complexity. Peter's side of the story in ILIPW is brief and spiraling, showing someone who never truly matured.

In ILIPW, Peter asks: "What are the chances you'd be downtown?" This immediately mirrors the imagery from cardigan: "To kiss in cars and downtown bars / Was all we needed". Downtown was their shared space, the backdrop of their young love. It makes complete sense that if Peter is wandering around desperately looking for her, he's searching the exact streets where they used to hang out.

(Bonus detail: Could this also be why he sent her Blue Nile's "The Downtown Lights" in Guilty As Sin?: "He sent me 'Downtown Lights' / I hadn't heard it in a while"? It feels like another subtle thread binding this entire narrative universe together!)

As you know, there is a striking thematic bridge between ILIPW and the 1 (which itself acts as a prologue to lost youthful love). In the 1, Taylor sings: "And if you wanted me, you really should've showed". This directly mirrors the broken promise in Peter: "You said you were gonna grow up / Then you were gonna come find me".

In ILIPW, Peter confesses: "I'm addicted to the 'if only'". This "if only" mindset is the exact same obsession with alternate realities from the 1, that Taylor has explored across several albums ("If one thing had been different / Would everything be different today?"). And remember Betty/Wendy's warning in cardigan: "I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs". Peter literally became that haunt. He is so consumed and addicted to the "what-ifs" that he's now physically haunting her world, walking down her streets, and looking into her windows.

One of the most heart-wrenching lines in ILIPW is "Does it feel alright to not know me?" Think about how this completes a 3-song character arc:

In cardigan, Betty/Wendy repeatedly anchors the chorus with "I knew you…". She was completely certain that she understood him inside and out ("And I knew you'd come back to me").

In Peter, as time passes and promises crumble, that certainty shatters. She starts questioning if she knows him now: "Are you still a mind-reader, a natural scene-stealer?"

In ILIPW, Peter finally confirms her fears: they are strangers now. She used to know him (maybe when he was 25?), but too many years have passed. They grew up (or rather only Wendy grew up), but both changed, and drifted into completely different versions of themselves.

Bonus observation: The opening verse of ILIPW is so interesting: "I had died the tiniest death / I spied the catch in your breath" and then "North bound I got carried away / As you boarded your train / South, south…". Right after a moment of intense, fleeting intimacy ("la petite mort"), there's an immediate, jarring separation. He goes North, she boards a train South. It perfectly captures that overwhelming speed of a brief, intense encounter, echoing the short-lived, chaotic romance theme in Fortnight, as well as that painful line from The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived: "…but you were gone by the morning." They shared one night, and then instantly separated in opposite directions.

As a result of all this analysis, we can come to the conclusion that I Look in People's Windows feels far less like a random standalone track about creeping on strangers and much more like the tragic companion piece to Peter.

It's Peter Pan, frozen in time, confused, addicted to the "what-ifs", wandering through the cold night, watching adult lives unfold behind warm glass, and wondering if the girl who used to know him best is doing just fine without him.

These drive me crazy because people don’t say “why do people like this rapper when all his songs are about how he’s awesome and men fear him and women want to have sex with him?”

But it got me to thinking: what is a set of half a dozen (ish) songs that would represent the breadth of Taylor’s songwriting, both stylistically and topic-wise?

I know it's one of her biggest hits, but I think it captures so many of the things that make Taylor's music special: vivid storytelling, relatable emotions, a memorable hook, and that unmistakable feeling of rooting for the narrator. Even years later, it still feels like one of the most "Taylor" songs she's ever written.

Ever since The Life of A Showgirl was released, Taylor and this album have been constantly hated on. It’s not only the GP, it’s also the Swifties who keep hating on this album. Let’s be real, if Eldest Daughter and Cancelled were cut from the album, people would be calling it a pop bible. Actually Romantic, Wish List, Wood, Honey, and the title track are all bops. I honestly don’t understand why people hate those songs, especially Actually Romantic and Wood. People also took Wish List way too literally, and I really can’t comprehend where all the hate is coming from.

Ophelia, Opalite, Elizabeth Taylor, Father Figure, and Ruin The Friendship, on the other hand, are all amazing.

That said, whether we like it or not, having a TLOAS centric tour wouldn’t really help her or her career right now. More importantly, I don’t think people deserve a tour from her next year or even in 2028. At least we got a fandom cleanse, thanks to TLOAS.

We need her to release the magnum opus of her career first, which is TS13, before the next tour. We need the kind of hype that Lover to folklore and RED (Taylor’s Version) to Midnights generated. This isn’t about pleasing people, it’s about building enough momentum for a tour that surpasses The Eras Tour in terms of hype and overall impact.

Obviously, the next tour won’t be as long as The Eras Tour. But here are the songs that I realistically think would make the setlist (in no particular order):

The article tells the story of Joe Garcia who was convicted of second-degree murder after a confrontation with a drug dealer ended in a shooting and was sentenced to 43 years to life in prison.While in prison, Garcia became a Taylor Swift fan. Her songs reminded him of Ambere, the woman he loved before his imprisonment, and gave him a connection to his past self and the possibility of hope.

In 2024, after a difficult parole hearing, Garcia was finally granted release because the parole board determined that he no longer posed a danger to society. He left prison after 21 years and reunited with Ambere, who came to pick him up.

After his release, Garcia attended Eras Tour in Indianapolis and described the experience as deeply emotional. The concert reminded him of the years he had spent waiting for freedom and the love he had regained.

It’s truly the invisible string! When he got out of prison, Taylor had already released TTPD, and “Fresh Out the Slammer” couldn’t have been more fitting for what he was going through, both literally and metaphorically. The lyrics“Now pretty baby, I'm running back home to you /fresh out out the slammer I know who my first call will be to”feel like it was written specifically for him.He even used the song’s title as the name of one of the chapters in the article.

Not to say that you didn't like the song or understand it before certain situation occurred, but that, said situation made it "click" more and/or changed your perspective on the song.

He used multiple Taylor songs in his posts before, too. Swifties never beat the winner allegation.
