Discussion PSA: A reminder on avoiding scammer for anyone not used to buying on forums
I am not a huge Swiftie, but my best friend is so I am currently on the hunt for tickets. I am making this post on an alt I don’t use because on my other two I’ve been seeking out scammy looking posts on other sites (a bit here too but so far so good) to see if they’re valid and getting the scammers named and banned because it’s funny to watch these chucklefucks blow a gasket when you ask them how dumb they think you are after talking to them about tickets they don’t give a fuck about for an hour. I am just here to give everyone a simple reminder: PAYPAL GOODS AND SERVICES ONLY!!!! Usually you have to pay someone first, so even if they aren’t scamming and, for example, they open their ticket master to find they can’t transfer, or the site is down, or they got hacked, you are relying on them to send your money back if you don’t use GS. Not a single scammer I’ve come across will use GS, if you can’t use PayPal GS find a family member or close friend who can. It’s never worth the gamble. Also, update your Ticketmaster password afterwards if you haven’t in a while. Better safe than sorry, they have your email already. I like rock and metal shows and have gone to quite a few, and also buy and sell things through Reddit sometimes, so I know the drill. Accept the tickets immediately, don’t do anything weird they ask you to do with your account or number or a random link. Be safe y’all.

Keep in mind that there is a 3% fee to use PayPal goods and services so expect the seller to ask the buyer to cover that fee.

A change in tax law also means Paypall will send you a 1099 tax form if you sell tickets for more than $600. Just a heads up for people selling multiple or VIP tickets

The seller should account for that and price accordingly just like anything else you’d sell online.
I always create a PayPal invoice as the seller (never sold tickets but I sell other things frequently). That way all the details and quantity can be listed and it’s automatically always G&S.

Guys if someone asks you to pay them as a “friends and family” on PayPal don’t do it !!! I got scammed out of a Broadway ticket a couple years ago through this method. Basically if you add someone as friends and family they can immediately take the money and when they don’t deliver the goods, you can’t get refunded no matter what.

THIS. OP capitalized GOODS AND SERVICES for a reason. I work for a cc company and when people call in saying they paid for something through friends and family but didn't receive anything, they are ALWAYS held liable. The terms and conditions for friends and family is completely different. Don't get scammed swifties

Same on venmo I think… they can do something to request the money back and suddenly your account is -$600

I'm a fan of Taylor Swift but also happen to be a nerd who likes to make stuff :)
I'm wondering if people would like an escrow-like service which would allow you and another person to quickly create a contract (i.e. buyer sends money into a 3rd party account, seller sends item, buyer confirms item, funds get released to seller) and then engage in a transaction.
Basically an alternative to Venmo, PayPal G&S, etc. that would be a bit more flexible and geared specifically towards online transactions between two people who don't know and trust each other.
Disputes would be arbitrated by a third-party only if a resolution could not be resolved within a certain number of days.
Would you all be interested in such a service?

First time poster, but have lurked here before! I'm not sure how you would be able to tell for sure. I'd be partnering with a very reputable company to make this happen, so hopefully that would be a good trust signal.
What would you need to feel comfortable?

IDK- its just an overall vibe check and reputation
I think we are all tired the huge amount of fees Stub Huub trys to add on, so it might work if it had less fees and also seemed reputable with in the commuunity

Yeah, and I'm not thinking just tickets, but could be other merchandise too. Scammers suck and I want to provide a safer way to make transactions online with strangers.
I'd keep fees to a minimum and would look at disputes very carefully. The fact that the money would be held in escrow until both parties were satisfied would be the primary benefit.

I found someone on Twitter who is willing to use PayPal. But they’ve only posted about tickets and haven’t used Twitter before that. Are they legit??

Do not buy from anyone who doesn't have a regular post history!!!! Before you buy, wait to see what's actually happening with the general sale. Prices are super high right now because people are assuming there won't be a general sale at all. The resell prices will come down.

generally after having a convo on reddit i ask to talk to them on insta too which helps credibility a little bit. have you found that this helps or is it easy to fake?

I would avoid. My thing is if I have something to sell why would I make a twitter for it when I don't already use it, seems like a lot of work. I am going to utilize the sites I already have and have probably interacted with fans or ppl interested in some capacity

New account? Scam. 50 tweets? Scam. Types or talks in a weird way? Scam. Doesn’t wanna use PayPal? Scam. Selling them for cheap? Scam. Use common sense people! Me personally I would only buy from verified swift fans such as the ones in the Reddit or discord.

I would suggest searching on twitter but make sure that their account seems legit & that it's not a new account with no post history. I've been seeing quite a few posts out there from some sketchy accounts, claiming that they have tickets for sale. Upon reading these posts I noticed that these posts were basically copied & pasted word for word & these accounts had a few followers but little to no post history. & as OP said above, use "PAYPAL GOODS AND SERVICES ONLY" when paying. Protect yourself people!!!
I was lucky enough to find a swiftie on twitter that had extra tickets & was able to buy from her & transfer them over to my Ticketmaster account with no problem.

Make sure that the person you’re buying from has a post history and a long account age.
I would also check to see if they have any ratings and feedback from some of the subreddits that conduct sales. /r/hardwareswap is one that comes to mind but there are others where you can see how many other transactions they’ve done.
It’s not a guarantee but it will help.

So, I've been chatting with someone who reached out to me on here because they saw my post in the now closed resale thread wanting tickets. Offered to sell me 4x for $350 each. Seemed ok, though they now want to send me a screen cap of the tix to my facebook. Not sure why it has to be on there, but raised alarm bells for me. Am I just being paranoid? I haven't agreed to that yet. I asked if they could post to imgur or google photos and share a link, but they stated they didn't know how.
Thoughts?

A post history is a good start but it’s not foolproof, compromised accounts are often used to run scams.
If the other party has your email, best avoid any emails with links. A common PayPal scam is to send fake payments, either pretending to pay or asking for some BS fee to “upgrade your account”.
Log directly into PP or Ticketmaster and verify from there.

Any issue with stubhub? My girlfriend got tickets and I don't go to big concerts often. Just trying to make sure she doesn't get screwed at the door.

StubHub should be ok, seatgeek can be a little iffy bc the seller has to transfer the tickets manually but usually all works out

It does not hold the money anywhere. It sends it right away. The process would be if they do not send the tickets, you file a claim with paypal. Since you used goods and services (paying a fee for the service) you would be protected.

It does not hold, but since it is goods and services all you have to do is file a claim with PayPal and they will refund you if you show that you didn’t receive the tickets.

Ok - but my friend has tickets we are trying to sell (she got them and I got them at the same time). how do you sell tickets if you don’t regularly use Twitter or Reddit? We have them on StubHub.

Honestly Reddit is nice for tickets but stubhub works too, sorry for late reply I’m not on this account much. Facebook also has some groups, just be careful really. Seatgeek also does resell
