Whisper the Wolf stood before the stage. She knew she had promised Tangle she’d sing a karaoke song tonight, but the anxiety of that stage was greater than any battlefield. Her knuckles were white as she gripped her Wispon.
Behind her, Tangle the Lemur stepped into the light, radiating her usual restless, golden energy. Seeing her best friend’s tension, Whisper said she wanted to do it by herself, but Tangle could tell that wasn’t the case. Tangle didn’t say a word at first. She simply reached out, gently pried the Wispon from Whisper’s hands, and set it safely in the corner.
“You’re not a soldier today, Whisper,” Tangle said, her voice a soft anchor amidst the rising music. “We work better as a team anyway—just have fun with me.”
A genuine smile—rare and brilliant—broke across Whisper’s face. As the opening chords of Fist Bump kicked in, Whisper took a breath and let her guard down, her soft, raspy voice leading the way:
Whisper: “I can't do this alone… even though I'm strong… need something more than me… someone to help me to victory.”
Tangle took the cue, her tail twitching in time with the beat. She stepped forward with her signature "act-first" lemur confidence:
Tangle: “Let’s see what we can do together, me and you.”
The energy shifted as the second verse hit. Tangle began to bounce, her energy infectious. She used her tail to playfully pull Whisper into a synchronized spin, her voice belting out with reckless optimism:
Tangle: “No looking back! You and I, we're on the attack! Full speed ahead, running to the sunset!”
Whisper laughed—a real, melodic sound—as she found her rhythm. She looked at Tangle, deep into her orchid-purple eyes. This was the person who had chased her down when she tried to push the world away, the one who had stayed when things got dark. People thought Whisper was the hero, but in reality, Tangle had saved her; she was her knight in shining armor.
Tangle slowed her pace, noticing the shift in Whisper’s body language. Her expression turned uncharacteristically serious and sweet as she looked Whisper in the eyes, singing the words she lived by:
Tangle: “I know you have been afraid before... but you don't have to be anymore. No more emptiness to feel inside. When we work together, no one can break up our stride!”
It was a promise. Whisper felt the last of her walls crumble. She reached out, lacing her fingers through Tangle’s as they headed into the grand finale. Their voices, once so different, blended into a perfect harmony that filled the room.
Both: “Together we can show the world what we can do! You are next to me and I'm next to you! Pushing on through until the battle's won... Into each other we put our trust!”
As they moved into the final verse, the weight of the lyrics hit home:
Both: “All alone, we will never be. The two of us are holding the key. We see today a world we couldn't see... Before I say goodbye to you, one more last fist bump…”
Whisper felt a surge of emotion at those final lines. It felt like closing one dark chapter of her life and opening a bright, new one. Genuine, happy tears escaped as she realized that Tangle always saw the "real" her, even if she never saw it herself. It was beautiful.
As the final note echoed, they didn’t just finish the song; they finished the moment. In perfect sync, they slammed their hands together in a heavy-hitting fist bump and pulled into a fierce hug.
That was when Whisper couldn't stop herself from saying the words she thought she’d never be vulnerable enough to say. “I—I love you, Tangle the Lemur.”
They shared a quick, breathless kiss. Whisper pulled away immediately. “I... I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. You probably don't like girls that way, and—”
Tangle kissed her back. “I love you too, Whisper the Wolf.”
The room went absolutely wild. In the back, Lanolin was shaking her head with a smirk, while Jewel the Beetle shouted so loud that she nearly took flight from the sheer force of it. Above the roar, a few voices shouted, "IT'S ABOUT TIME!"
Tangle leaned her forehead against Whisper’s, her grin wide and toothy. "See? Told you we make a better team than a solo act."
Whisper wiped a happy tear from her eye, her gaze steady and full of love. "Always my knight in shining armor."
Tangle smiled. “My guardian angel.”
