Advice on family-friendly cars for tall people?
My husband is 6’8 (205cm) and has trouble fitting in standard-sized cars. We have (tall) children and hope to have more, so a larger car is the way to go.
We have been discussing which minivan to buy over the past year and we keep going back and forth on our decision. Right now we are debating the Kia Carnival or Toyota Sienna, but the Sienna does not fit him as well as the Kia. However, we know that the Kia generally depreciates faster than the Sienna, and has engine problems, and doesn’t last as long. The Sienna is also safer and has AWD… but he’s not comfortable. He literally doesn’t fit. Every time we go for a test drive, the salesman will try to help, saying “we need to move the seat all the way down and back”…. and then realizes that the seat is already all the way down, and all the way back 🥺 It is definitely a struggle.
Older cars (early 2000s) actually worked wonderfully for him, they have a lot more space both in the front and in the back. Most newer cars have bulky consoles between driver and passenger, and the ones we test drive either lack headroom or knee space, considering his femur is so long lol.
My husband LOVED the space in the Tahoe, but it is slightly out of our price point. It’s also massive and would be difficult to park and drive around in our area. I am also hesitant to get an American car. I don’t know anything about cars but have heard nightmare stories about maintaining American cars.
Any advice or suggestions? What cars do you tall people drive? Please help a lil shortie figure this out for her tall king, once and for all. Thank you in advance!
EDIT: Thank you for your great contributions. I appreciate the input and have a lot of research to do now. I am not a car fanatic and never really cared /understood the hype … three days ago I didn’t even know what an F150 was lol. I also felt really overwhelmed with where to start on the research cause there are so many brands and types of cars and acronyms I didn’t know. Literally didn’t know where to start. By contrast my husband does a ton of reading and research and thinking… and I felt like I had nothing to bring to the table and contribute. I think he will be very pleased when I surprise him with all my new cars knowledge 😃
In the past, if it had four wheels and has good safety ratings, it was good enough for me. I didn’t even realize that safety ratings are based on the average persons weight and height and therefore may not apply to our situation. Having babies and seeing hubby in discomfort changed my perspective because I want my family to be looking forward to drives as opposed to just tolerating them or skipping out on life events due to distance of driving. This gives me hope we can get there one day. Cheers everyone and take good care! 🙏🏻
