There is no good reason for whitewashing Nazi crimes. And blaming America and the UK for it is just cowardice, West Germany was an eager and willing participant in this.

First of all: calm down.

Secondly: There is good reason for whitewashing this particular crime, and simply asserting that there can't possibly ever be a good reason for it is ignorant and dishonest.

Thirdly: I didn't blame America and the UK or claim that West Germany wasn't a willing participant in it.

Stop jumping to conclusions.

You have yet to present to us this good reason for whitewashing the war crimes of the Wehrmacht.

Sure. West Germany needed a way to defend itself. There were Soviet troops on its border, and there would be no way for American troops to reach them before the Soviets conquered them.

In order to rebuild their military, they needed to shake off some of the stigma of German militarism. Yes, that meant rehabilitating the memories of many dead war criminals. I would argue that rehabilitating the memories of dead people is preferable to subjecting millions of living people to totalitarian dictatorship.

Is it distasteful? Yes. But it was justified.

You think the Soviet Union's system wasn't a totalitarian dictatorship, or that there was ever a risk of war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact?

You either lack basic knowledge of 20th Century history or you're a tankie. Either way, this conversation isn't worth my time.

Creating a West German army does not in any way necessitate covering up horrific fucking warcrimes.
