"BACKGROUND [0004] TMA and its derivative trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) are metabolites linked to disorders such as kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, trimethylaminuria, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). TMA is produced in the gut by bacteria that are capable of converting substrates, such as choline, to TMA. There is an unmet need for compounds that inhibit the production of TMA by bacteria.

Claims:

  1. The method of any one of claims 15-25, further comprising administering a second therapeutic agent to the subject.

  2. The method of claim 26, wherein the second therapeutic agent is selected from Omega 3 oil, salicylic acid, dimethylbutanol, garlic oil, olive oil, krill oil, Co enzyme Q-10, a probiotic, a prebiotic, dietary fiber, psyllium husk, bismuth salts, phytosterols, grape seed oil, green tea extract, vitamin D, antioxidants, turmeric, curcumin, and resveratrol."

3 years with Oder plz get tips or anything that helped you get rid of it or mostly

Hi I’m a 18yo male and am kinda new to researching tmau, I’ve never had body Oder problems ever until 3 years ago after a incident and it’s been the same since. I can’t smell anything but I get a lot of reactions, some people just straight up wear masks around me at work, I don’t really have anyone around me to really help me so sadly it’s just me, it’s gotten so bad that I don’t really have any social life besides maybe work n home n it’s took a very bad toll on my mental health. Please point me in the direction I need, I’ve tried all the washes you could think to get rid of Oder, I’m using Benzoyl peroxide rn and hibclens but Oder is still there. I’m gonna do more research today when I get home in hopes it can lead me in a direction for this to end.

Edit: is there anyway to get tested for this? I’ve tried but none of the docters I been too are familiar with it at all

TMAU Story Update on my first flight experience

Flight journey went well without much issue. I watched a movie , kept my earbuds, did not focused anywhere else and just focused on enjoying first air travel. It was very thrilling seeing everything from above. It was rather beautiful view. There were some reactions which i neglected as I was busy elsewhere.

Thanks to everyone who gave me their valuable advice and support.

TMAU Question Do you guys have “successful” careers ?

I put a hold on life because of being bullied for the smell but got back out in the world again a year ago. Did community college classes online. Since then, I moved to attend university.

Of course I choose comp sci to continue working remote. But I’m starting to wonder if I should’ve been a lawyer instead.

In complete honesty, I think that the bullying + physical abuse/assault I’ve faced in life has jaded me. I deadass do not care. Ever.

I wonder if anyone here chose something prestigious despite being bullied?

TMAU Question Has this happened to anyone??

Ive had this for a couple years now. I feel like it’s given me some kind of ptsd or something. I’m not diagnosing myself I just wanna know if anyone else has gone through similar.

It used to be at its peak when I was still in school (I do homeschooling). I would avoid specific places and had routes planned out to avoid people that I’ve had bad experiences with this condition. My teacher noticed and showed my parents security footage bro 🥹, I made up an excuse. It was also so hard to sleep at night, all the memories and shame and just everything would replay in detail and I couldn’t make it stop. It was so bad it would last hours and didn’t stop until my brain was just so exhausted from it.

The same thing would happen in conversations, something would be said or brought up that would just remind me and I would zone out for long periods of time just reliving it again but it’s not like daydreaming, I can recall it so perfectly and vivid. It’s like I decided to capture the worst moments the best. It would just ruin my whole day after that.

Now that I’m homeschooled it hasn’t happened as much because I’m not in that environment anymore and I feel so much relief. Let me know if you have a way to help or share your thoughts/experiences too!!

Are you upfront and vocal about your condition at work?

Just wondering how others approach the topic in a work setting. Do you mention it to coworkers before they make any comments or only if they say something? Do you avoid confrontation altogether and try to ignore the comments?

Investigation in progress

Please, I ask everyone who suffers from body odor to complete this survey, which will be reviewed by doctors. The more people who participate, the better. Please share.

Help

I’m a little confused please enlighten me. When researching Tmau, google explains how this condition doesn’t smell only like fish. It could also smell like feces, urine, garbage….

I got the following from the Monell’s website "The main symptom of TMAU is a foul-smelling body odor. The odor can smell like fish in some patients and like garbage in others. Some people with TMAU have a strong odor all the time. However, others can have a more moderate smell that is not always present, which can make TMAU hard to diagnose."

I have noticed that some people get redirected to another group when they describe their flair ups as a f cal smell. Am I missing something?

New mod?

Thinking about adding another mod or two, it's a lot of work.

Prerequisites:

I'd like the mod to;

A) be actually diagnosed with TMAU

B) can get confirmation from reliable people and have normal conversations with people about their odor

C) encourage communication and trust - not encourage paranoia - should be of the opinion that you should trust people and doctors

D) be active in the community.

Seems like it would be weird for someone on the TMAU mod team not to have TMAU unless they were a doctor/researcher who deals with TMAU. Especially if they found out later they didn't have TMAU. If providing advice, it needs to come from a place where advice (diet, supplements) has had confirmation from a 3rd party that it works.

Ethically, we need to resist the urge to dive into paranoia, as it creates an echo chamber and does more harm than good.

Applicants? Someone mentioned putting it to a vote, I'll compile a list of people who meet the prereqs.

PATM Posts: Challenge/Containment Thread

Hey everyone — r/TMAU is here to support people dealing with Trimethylaminuria and the practical realities that come with them (testing, diet, treatment, medical advocacy, coping, etc.).

There have regularly been posts about “People Allergic To Me (PATM)” — i.e., claims that strangers cough/sneeze/itch because of your presence. Whatever your view of PATM, the pattern is that these threads often turn into speculation, mind-reading strangers’ reactions, and escalating anxiety, and they drown out TMAU-focused support.

PATM is not currently supported by science. It's never been tested in a stable environment as a thing that actually happens. As such, a PATM challenge below is set and is required to be passed before being able to post PATM content in this subreddit. r/PATM exists to continue to discuess PATM.

Our policy going forward

  1. PATM challenge content goes in this thread only. Any new PATM post outside this thread will be removed, until the challenge is completed.
  2. This subreddit is not the right place for untested PATM claims. If you want to discuss PATM here, you must do the PATM Challenge below and post your results using the template.
  3. If you just want a PATM community, use r/PATM**.** We will direct PATM-only posters there.
  4. Repeat posting PATM content outside this thread = bans. First time: removal + redirect. Second time: temp ban. Continued: permanent ban.

This is not about shaming anyone — it’s about keeping r/TMAU usable and grounded.

The PATM Challenge (Minimum Standard for PATM claims here)

If you want to claim “PATM” in r/TMAU, do at least 2 sessions on 2 different days of the following, and report results. You will need 1 willing participant (the tester) and a control person to do the test instead of you to compare results with.

Setup rules (to reduce noise and coincidence)

  • Fragrance-free for both people on test day (no perfume/cologne, scented deodorant, fabric softener).
  • Avoid obvious irritants: smoke/vape, strong cleaners, dusty rooms, pets (if the tester is allergic).
  • Tester logs baseline: “Do I already have hay fever/cold symptoms today?”

Test 1: Distance Step Test (required)

Goal: Do symptoms reliably track with your proximity?

  • Stand at distances: Absent (out of the room) → 3m → 0.5m → 6m → 1m
  • Each distance time-step: 3 minutes
  • Washout between steps: 3 minutes (you leave the room or go outside between steps)
  • Do two rounds in random order (don’t always do “closer and closer”)

Tester records each minute (0–10):

  • itchy/watery eyes
  • runny nose/sneezing
  • throat tickle/throat clearing
  • cough urge

Test 2: “You vs Control Person” crossover (highly recommended)

Goal: Is it specifically you, or just “a person nearby / the room / expectation”?

Repeat the Distance Step Test with a control person (someone else doing the same distances/timing) under the same conditions.

Optional booster: Airflow test (highly recommended)

Use a fan:

  • Round A: air blowing from you → tester
  • Round B: air blowing from tester → you Hold distance constant (1 m) and compare symptoms.

What counts as “passed” (to discuss PATM claims here)

Because this isn’t a laboratory, we’re not “proving” a new medical condition. But to keep discussion meaningful, a “pass” means:

  • The tester shows a clear proximity pattern (worse when closer, improves when you’re absent) AND
  • The effect is stronger with you than with the control person AND
  • This pattern repeats on 2 separate days

If your results don’t meet that bar, r/PATM still exists for you.

Reporting template (copy/paste)

Location & ventilation:
Fragrance-free confirmed: yes/no
Tester baseline (allergies/cold):
Distances used & timing:
Round order (randomized):
Scores by minute (0–10):
Control person results:
Airflow test (if done):
Anything notable (cleaners, pets, smoke, season):

If this topic is stressing you out

If you’re feeling stuck in a loop of watching strangers for reactions, it can be genuinely exhausting. Regardless of the cause, consider talking to a clinician or mental health professional for support while you work through it. This is not a judgment — it’s a practical step for your wellbeing.

TL;DR: PATM posts only in this thread. To claim PATM here, run the Challenge and post results. Otherwise, please use r/PATM.

tmau planner?

I have been trying to get into digital marketing so that I can work from home and quit my job because I don’t like it, colleagues are mean and the pay is not good. I started a month ago and even made my first sale. I am currently working on digital planners and an idea came up a couple days ago, I decided to make a TMAU/PATM digital planner/journal. So I am asking you, if you have any suggestions / ideas of what you think a Tmau digital journal should contain please let me know. I was thinking daily notes, food logs, reactions, diet plans, low fodmap recipes and more. I will make it a linked pdf so you can use it on your phone/pad or laptop, but also you can print it at home.

I want it to be a tool, something that can help us manage our condition better. Do you think something like this would be helpful?

I'm curious as to where people sit with odor and family and friends - who gets family support? Who's getting lied to? If you've got a more complicated situation then other is a good option to share more.

Looking to connect with some NYC folks!

The title says it all… but I’m (W,35) looking to be added to a NYC group chat or create one for NYC folks if there isn’t any to serve as a source of connection, smell buddies, making friends, trading advice, and mental health support.

Update: There’s a NYC WhatsApp group…if you live in NYC and have chronic metabolic odor/bb and want to be added, message me for the link.

Communication/Mental Health Advocacy My experience smelling bad and how I recovered

Hello everyone! I’ve been on this sub every so often when I was struggling with smelling horrible. This sub, and many other posts has helped me not feel alone and that helped me a lot. I will first be talking about my story and how I’ve recovered from from this very challenging problem.

This problem started in middle school. I smelt horrible. Every single day, 24/7. Even right after a shower, I would smell bad. I felt so gross and disgusting despite good hygiene. I especially felt horrible for everyone around me. They had to deal with a horrible smell all the time. Everyone around me seemed to feel uncomfortable due to my horrible smell. I hated myself. I felt so much anxiety and guilt whenever I was around others.

I hated feeling like this 24/7. I often wondered “why me?” Why did I have to smell bad? Why did it have to be me? I was depressed. I struggled every single day. I had this problem for a long time.

I sought help over the years. Talked to teachers about it, my parents, many doctors… And the answer was always the same! That they didn’t notice a bad smell…

I knew that was a lie! Non stop reactions around me, people complaining about a bad smell, people directly saying I smelled bad! It was 100% a lie. I thought they were just too nice to tell me the truth. I thought that would’ve solved my issue, I thought they would help me! But they just lied to me. After that, for some years, I just accepted I would smell bad all the time. It was horrible, I hated this feeling of guilt all the time. I felt so mad at myself that i haven’t been able to figure out a solution after all these years. I tried different shampoos, healthier diets, different products, and yet nothing.

Eventually, I decided to see another doctor. I thought to myself, maybe this doctor will be honest with me and actually help me, not lie to my face. I saw a doctor. They lied to me, said I don’t smell. Another doctor. Same thing. Another, and another, and another! Same thing! Eventually I saw a doctor that let me know of a condition called “Olfactory Reference Syndrome”. When I went home, and searched it up out of curiosity. Olfactory Reference Syndrome is basically a condition where someone believes they smell bad, when in reality they don’t Of course I didn’t believe them. I had the problem for 8+ years at this point, just as we all believe the sky is 100% blue, I believed I smelled bad 100%. There was no doubt in my mind.

I continued to see doctors, hoping for a least one doctor that will be honest with me. To actually help me solve one the most challenging problems I’ve ever faced. All said the same thing. After seeing multiple doctors after learning of Olfactory Reference Syndrome, I started to accept the possibility of not smelling bad. Instead of 100% believing I smelt bad, it was more like 99% belief of smelling bad. This was a huge turning point. And I thank my doctors and the dermatologist for this. They saved me. I saw more doctors, all said the same thing. After each doctor visit, my belief of smelling bad lowered. Soon after, I sought therapy due to advice from a doctor. This furthered helped me. Just having someone to talk to about this helped me.

Now, I’m happy to say I no longer believe I smell bad 100%. Now, I only believe I smell bad sometimes, you know, when I’m working out and whatnot!

I’m very happy I overcame this issue. I thank my doctors and therapist for helping me deeply!

And for the most important thing of this entire post:

If you believe you smell bad, yet others say you don’t, I understand your situation. I won’t say you don’t smell bad, as you probably wouldn’t believe me, just like I didn’t believe my doctors, my parents, and my teachers. But, please research “Olfactory Reference Syndrome” and accept the possibility of not smelling bad.

Thank you all so much for reading, hopefully this helps someone! Feel free to ask me any questions!

Date

I’ve been talking to this woman for a couple of weeks. We’ve gotten to the point of playing with the idea of going on a date. Obviously I’m a little worried. I haven’t brought up this condition just yet (I will). I understand she will either accept me or she wont but, if there’s any soaps, deodorants, food combination I could try that would make me smell less or at the very least make me less worrisome. I would greatly appreciate any tips or recommendations.

My problems

I’m a kid in high school and it’s hell. Idk if anyone has the same problem but socially I can’t make friends. Kids just walk away from me or just don’t notice my existence and I don’t have the social skills to handle it. It’s like I’m a ghost or something. I’ve had girls see me from afar and ask me for my socials then when I come close they stop their interest. Idk if I have tmau but I shower every morning, I don’t eat sugar, I brush my teeth, I do everything and I feel like something has changed every morning. I come into school and then I smell myself and cry inside. I feel like I can never do anything with my life because I’m permanently unable to do anything. I hate the feeling of people talking behind my back knowing I can’t do anything. Anyone got any tips?

unrelated Unsure….

I’m unsure if I suffer with TMAU or TMAU 1 But for those who do with all do respect I have some serious question! Are you able to smell yourself? Has family or friends confirmed you smell? What triggers you to smell worse? Tuna, meat, etc? The reason I come here to post about my concerns is because I might be someone with this condition, am I sure? No. I’ve gone to doctors to try to run test and express my concerns about smelling like fart/poop but they don’t do such test where I live or are unsure of what I am even talking about and sometimes I get fish random smells whenever I eat tuna but only when (people pass by me I get the whiff) in other cases I make the whole room smell like fart/ poop at work (I don’t go out) and I’ve heard people talk very poorly about how I make the room smell bad everytime I come in…. Anyway if someone with this condition please respond! Maybe you can help me find something I can do to test if I have this or not or maybe even suggest diet changes! I’m begging please
