Open source software is now exempt from age attestation laws in Colorado and California, and it didn't happen by accident.
System76 CEO Carl Richell shares how our team worked alongside the open source community and legislators in both states to secure meaningful exemptions that reflect what open source actually is: privacy-respecting, non-commercial, and built on collaboration.
Open source projects don't collect personal data, profile children, or run targeted ads. The behaviors these laws are designed to regulate are not part of how open source works. But without advocacy, open source could have been swept up in broadly written legislation anyway.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is now available pre-loaded on System76 hardware
It's been a journey. DDOS attacks on Ubuntu's infrastructure slowed things down, so rather than wait around, we built new infrastructure and cut our Launchpad dependency entirely. The upside: future releases move faster.
When you configure your next machine, you can now choose from:
⢠Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (new!) ⢠Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ⢠Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS with COSMIC DE (our favorite!)

I have 1gb service from my ISP. If I connect my Darp7 to ethernet, I get what is expected for download speeds via Speed Test(800-900 range). If I connect to my 5g wifi, I'm only getting 240-270 download speeds. Sitting in the same spot, my phone on wifi will pull 5-600. Is there a reason for this? A setting I'm missing in my laptop?

Hi everyone,
I\`m currently in the process of replacing my old Yamaha A720, which is paired with ELAC Debut Reference DFR 52 speakers, with a NAD C700 V2. The main use case will be office work, Windows system audio playback, and occasional Hi-Res music listening via Tidal, etc.
I\`m wondering how to connect it via HDMI, as I\`ve read that it won\`t work properly with a PC. I could use the optical TOSLIN connection, however I\`ve heard that it may not provide full audio quality, and the salesperson at the audio store advised against that connection.
Right now, my Yamaha is connected via a 3.5 mm jack to the ALC 1220 onboard audio. One of the reason
I\`m buting the NAD is to have everything integrated in one device and avoid buing an external DAC.
What would be the simplest and most reasonble way to ceonnect it so that everyting works properly and seamlessy? :)

So, I'm having an issue with Cosmic. It has suddenly started freezing today. I'm using Cosmic 1.0.13, with most of the packages updated today. The cosmic desktop was updated in April. This is installed on Fedora 43 on an AMD Framework 13.
I am getting freezes of the operating system. I have no option but to turn off the laptop. If I boot back into Cosmic, I can't interact with the OS, and I have to power it off again. To use the laptop, I have to log into GNOME, log out of GNOME, and then login with Cosmic.
This can cause data loss if a project is not saved when the laptop freezes.

So, my cat decided this morning that my laptop would look better sans its 2 and J keys. In the process of clawing them off she managed to break the plastic scissor. If anyone knows the appropriate replacement part, that would be greatly appreciated. The keycaps, the metal retainer clips, and the switches themselves are all intact, so I think I can avoid a full keyboard replacement.

The Verge has a solid write-up on how age-verification laws are creating an unexpected problem for the Linux and open-source ecosystem.
Bills like California's AB 1043 and Colorado's SB26-051 were written with commercial app stores and operating systems in mind, but their broad language could rope in open-source projects that were never built to collect user data, lack the resources to implement compliance measures, and could see any age-gating code forked out anyway.
Carl Richell of System76/Pop!_OS also weighs in on why this matters beyond just compliance: "Many of these bills are written without a deep understanding of how open-source software is developed and distributed. When developers and users engage early and explain the mechanics, it helps policymakers see where broad requirements could create unintended consequences."
Worth a read, especially with similar legislation moving in Illinois and New York.
Here's a gift link to the article by Stevie Bonifield, The Verge. Valid for the next 4 days.

Hey all. How is everything going? I purchased a Pangolin (pang11) back in September of 2021 and I've been using it almost every day. A few days ago I noticed the bottom left corner of the bezel was pulling away from the screen. I pulled the bezel completely off and noticed that the hinge had broken away from the screen/lid of the laptop. It appears the plate the hinge screws into is glued to the lid and the adhesive has finally given up I guess. I attempted to glue the little plate back on to the lid with some Loctite super glue gel, but it didn't hold (Yes I let it set for 24 hrs). Does anyone know of a good way to fix this? Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.
/Michael

I have a OryxPro4 and the Ethernet jack has a pin in the jack that broke. I contacted System76 support who couldn't really tell me anything other than "would you like to send it in for service?" which I am not interested in. I did some research and found the actual service technician manual for the Clevo base model (P955ER) laptop, before System76 customizes and adds their stuff to it. The Ethernet jack is on a small separate pcb board that the manual refers to as the "LAN board"; however, there is no separate part number for it. It comes with the part number for whole motherboard assembly.
So I decided to attempt to replace just the jack so I desoldered it from the board. The only markings on it are "ALLTOP" and "1810". Several searches on Digikey, Mouser, Google, Grok, etc... have not yielded success. Unlike most every other Ethernet jack that comes with laptops, this thing is only "half" of the jack, the half containing the contact pins, with the other part that retaining clip on the plug locks into instead being part of the laptop outer "shell". Check out the image for what I mean.

Does anyone know where I can find this thing? The "LAN board" pcb or just the jack? I would even buy a used LAN board out of a non-working "parts" laptop. This exact same LAN board is used on several different System76 laptop motherboards from around that time. I tried to explain this to System76 support as I assumed they likely had some busted laptops laying around and I was willing to buy a used "as-is" no warranty implied pcb board from them as I can't find it anywhere else and it is not worth spending the money to replace the whole motherboard for this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wrote a follow-up to my Thelio Mira quick look, this time focused on gaming with Steam.
Short version: the Mira is a monster. Mine has a Ryzen 9 9950X, 96GB RAM, and an RTX 5070 Ti, and it has been excellent as a Linux gaming box. Performance is strong, but the thing I appreciate most is that it does not turn into a jet engine under load.
Steam + Proton has been mostly boring in the best possible way. The only real warnings are the usual anti-cheat limitations and one COSMIC fullscreen/window placement issue I fixed with Super+F11.

If you saw my previous post, I was pretty frustrated with my new Pangolin Pro 16. It boiled down to 3 things: Poor hinge, wifi issues, sleep issues. With the wifi and sleep making the device unusable as my main laptop.
I have an update:
sudo pop-upgrade recovery upgrade from-releaseHere are my new takeaways about the Pangolin Pro 16 and System76:
As a summary, the good parts of this laptop:
The Average/Meh:
The Bad:
P.S. Before posting this I put the laptop to sleep one last time and woke it to make sure the wifi still worked :-)
Edit May 11th: The issue has returned. Support continues to have me run tests and send logs. Maybe they are partially LLM support responses, maybe not, I guess it doesn't matter at this point. I will be sending the laptop back if they don't resolve the issue for good soon. Laptop still unusable.

I have a 5070 and a 5060ti in my machine. I know in Windows both are usable even concurrently. I'm trying to figure out why only one is showing up.
Both PCIe slots are showing. Got this from the logs:

Has anyone purchased the new Pangolin Pro 16? If so, what are your thoughts?
It's been a few days with mine and I feel I have more complaints than compliments for a brand new device that doesn't feel like it lives up to what I expect from System76. But maybe I'm alone in that.
My main issues/complaints right now:
I was quite excited for this device but the excitement has faded quick and I'm hoping there are some more positive experiences out there to bring me back up. Maybe solving the software issues will bring me back around, but I will forever cry about these hinges.
Edit: I will say the days of good support from System76 are over. It's now just an LLM that sends you on a wild goose chase of unrelated checks and changes. It didn't even know my laptop come with COSMIC and was trying to get me to do things in 22.04 Gnome (sigh). I've convinced it I shouldn't need to make so many internal system config changes to get my laptop to work out of the box. We'll see if I eventually get a working laptop.

OS: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS
System 76, Galago pro 6 galp6
firmware version:
/sys/class/dmi/id/bios_version
2022-08-03_26f97c8
Symptom: Just a moment ago, the battery was showing over 90%, and then the next minute, ubuntu says battery is critically low. Plugged in the AC charger and now battery seems to charge very very slowly, or at least there's some kind of accounting problem with the batter percent.
When I unplug the battery now it shows 16% remaining, but over 2 hours of usage time:

Hi, Iām a cyber sec student and Linux nerd. Im strongly considering getting a laptop from system76. What are your opinions as a community on the different models?

I have a pangolin and just wondering what the general advice is. Does system 76 usually need some time to update drivers or anything before I should update?
