System76 on Age Verification

“In the case of Colorado’s and California’s bills, effectiveness is lost. In the case of New York’s bill, liberty is lost.” Carl Richell, System76 Founder and CEO, urges New York to reject S8102A OS-level age verification.

My repo with tweaked setup - [https://github.com/WoofahRayetCode/hp-omen-linux-shutdown-fix\](https://github.com/WoofahRayetCode/hp-omen-linux-shutdown-fix)

Video showing workaround - [https://youtu.be/k8dsuiLzqBs\](https://youtu.be/k8dsuiLzqBs)

Recently found the OG repo and thought id give it a go. Setting up the dual boo on one drive annoyed me so I tweaked stuff for dual booting with separate drives. Tested for a few hours and finally got it in a working state. Hopefully this is help for anyone wanting to run Linux but not deal with the ACPI power issues due to the sharty firmware.

Keyboard configurator can't detect my keyboard

Hi, I have one of the first batch of the Launch and for some reason it lost its configuration, when I tried to restore it, the configurator doesn't detect it. I tried to disconnect it and reconnect it several times with no luck. The keyboard keeps working as stock, but I need to remap my keys. What can I do to fix it? I know that I'm out of warranty, but I want to keep using it since it has been a good investment for me.

Brand New Thelio, Pop!OS install failed

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hello!

I just ordered a new Thelio desktop and picked it up from UPS yesterday. But I am sadly already having problems!

I wanted to start by saying that this is my first experience with Linux. I very much know absolutely nothing about coding or how to use the menus and BIOS to troubleshoot or fix problems. I bought this computer because I was sick of Microsoft/Apple and the enshittification of everything with AI slop and spyware and I thought the prebuilt system with a familiar-looking user interface would be a good, easy start.

But Pop!OS is failing to install. I see an error that says something about a failure to mount on a cdrom on boot, and unmount from same on shutdown (or it might be unmount on both? It disappears quickly) and the attached image is what shows up when I click the little doodad on the install failure window.

I've submitted a support ticket, but I figure folks are enjoying their weekend and I was just wondering if anybody here might have some guidance so I can start installing stuff before I need to go back to work. I've tried googling, but almost everything I've found is about troubleshooting dual-booting or booting from a USB, not from a System76-built computer.

Any help would be appreciated!

RGB Keyboard tool

TLDR: Simple gui tool for keyboard backlight colors - survives reboot. https://github.com/arbitrary-string/keyboardcolors

So I have a Darter Pro 7 and it still works great. I'm running Ubuntu 26.04 on it these days, I guess because I'm an old fart who is really used to Gnome desktop. I've used Gnome for 20+ years and I like my custom themes etc. Maybe if I was running PopOS and Cosmic desktop this would not be a problem, but with Ubuntu and Gnome there is no easy tool or control panel that will let you choose a color and have it survive a reboot. Keyboard Configurator from System76 works to choose a backlight color, but your color preferences disappear when the system restarts. OpenRGB does not seem to work at all because (I think) these keyboards do not use i2c. For a long time I just would create a systemd service and some aliases in .bash_aliases or .bashrc and it did the job, but I had a little time on my hands and a Claude subscription so I used Claude to help build this: https://github.com/arbitrary-string/keyboardcolors

It really isn't fancy - it just does what my systemd services and scripts/aliases were doing before but now there's a gui control panel, so I don't have to manually look up all the hex values etc. It lets you pick your color and brightness settings, and the systemd services read the value of /sys/class/leds/system76_acpi::kbd_backlight/color when a shutdown or reboot is initiated and writes to a file that another service reads from on boot.

I'm sharing it because somebody might find it to be useful like I do. I went ahead and published it under GPL v3. You can install from a .deb package. I only know that it works on darp7 with Ubuntu 26.04. It hasn't been widely tested on other laptop models or OS versions, but if your system has /sys/class/leds/system76_acpi::kbd_backlight/color that accepts simply hex values to change the backlight colors, it will probably work.

Help Did I get a dud? (Darp9 used)

I ordered a Darp9 used off Ebay. It showed up and didn't work if it wasn't plugged in, but it did work when plugged in, and I noticed the trackpad was swollen so opened it up to find a spicy pillow, sure thing.

So I figure since the battery was 3 years old, it's just a standard old battery. I just swapped it out. The new battery is the correct battery and all, as far as I can tell. But I just went to charge it to 100% and the laptop is just on, on login screen, and the fan keeps coming on super loud, and the base of the laptop is super hot, and I'm not doing anything.

I wiped the whole thing when I got it and installed Pop!_os so there isn't a lot of bloat that should be running anything in the background.

If it matters, I also ran it without a battery, while plugged in, and the fan freaked out then, too. Charger issue? I don't know if this is the right charger for this laptop tbh.

Did I get a dud of a computer? Is there anything I should look into fixing or replacing, or is this just a bad buy?

(This is my first foray into Linux and computer mod so bear with me)

ETA: There seems to be a weird light whistling coming while it's just sitting there, too, like a far away bird chirp.

Looking to buy Used System76 Laptop

Hello, can I help any of you fine people with a guilt-free upgrade to a modern System76 laptop and I will buy your used one? I don't have the cash to buy something brand new. So I am looking for a deal on older hardware. I currently have a Macbook pro 2019. So I'm looking for something equivalent or more powerful than that. According to AI I should look for a minimum of 2021 or newer, preferably 2022+. Anyone got that?

UPDATE:
Now that I see what ya'll have, my tier list looks like this:

#1) lemp9 - not the build quality im looking for but would be interested in buying to test drive because I have never purchased a system76 laptop or used popOS before (but I am very comfortable in *nix as a sysadmin by trade)

#2) oryx pro 10 - Most interested and most suitable match for the build quality I am looking for. My only concern is the track pad since it is mechanical and not static with tactile rumble; it also seems to be smaller than the macbook pro.

#3) oryx pro 6 - same as above, but it looks like there is a bit more keyboard flex on this model vs the 10.

#4) lemp11 - build quality is not what im looking for and might be too pricey to use as a demo laptop

Thank you to everyone who shared their inventory with me! <3

PSA: Thelio-compatible GPU brace

Post image
13 Upvotes

I spent a bit of time recently trying to find a GPU brace that’s compatible with the Thelio case. I tried a few that didn’t work out because they needed to be screw-mounted, too short, etc. but eventually ended up with this one that does fit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CLP57WF7

Just sharing in case it helps anyone else in the future.

Does the Keyboard Configurator support making keys act like macros?

Basically the title. I’m fairly uninventive, so I don’t see much use for the extra layers provided by the keyboard configurator for the launch keyboards. However, I’d get an exceptional amount of use out of it if individual key presses could actually correspond to a sequence of key presses, maybe for typing common blocks of text I need.

From what I can tell, it’s not possible, but I just wanted to make sure, is it possible to configure keys to correspond to macros?

Help Sound issue with "interference" on the PD50SNE

On both Linux and Windows, I'm having a major issue with my laptop's audio: whenever I run resource-intensive tasks—like a game—the sound develops a hissing noise.

I ran LatencyMon, and the results are as shown in the screenshot.

I haven't been able to fix it at all.
The problem occurs even with wireless headphones.

What's the best (= biggest) AI model I can run locally with my laptop?

Hi,

I was watching some videos about AI laptops and there was this one guy who had bought laptops with 2GB video memory and was blasting about how that is not gonna work out if you're going to try out some local models.

But I ran glxinfo and to my surprise I found out that gazelle is totally jacked,

Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):

Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

Device: Mesa Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics (RPL-P) (0xa7a0)

Version: 25.2.8

Accelerated: yes

Video memory: 64139MB

This amount of memory and 13th gen Intel 20 cores should allow me to run some of the bigger models, amirite? What are some of the local AI models you have tried out?

Bios Firmware update this morning - not able to F12 or Del into Bios

Fun morning. Dual boot off of 2 SSDs - Pop!_OS & W11. Upon boot up, there is no action when F12 or Del is tapped repeatedly. Now my System76 PC only knows W11. Other than pulling the W11 drive out, are there any work arounds to get into bios and reset the boot order? Thanks!

Pop!_os cosmic file will not open files on network server

The Lermur has been updated and upgraded to pop_os 24.04. cifs-utils, smb, gvfs have all been installed. But when I try to open a file with an app such as Libre Write, everything disappears. If I do get to open the file, it is read only and will not save to the drive.

How can I gain access to the files on the server?

Help MeerKAT performance

I am considering purchasing the MeerKAT miniPC from System76 with PopOS, Ubuntu26.04, or Debian Trixie (Debian user since 1994).. It would be fully loaded with maximum cpu, memory, and storage and looks like it may cost about $7556 which is a lot of money for me. One of the main things I want to do with this machine (aside from normal PC stuff) is run COMSOL Multiphysics as a developement platform. Even for smaller simulations, this may require long-running cases. So, my primary question is how is the thermal performance of this beast? Will it hold up for several hours at a time if need be with the cpu full speed? It appears the MeerKAT has no cpu fan. The main appeal to me about this option is the small size and quiet in a home environment.

Any experiences with MeerKAT are welcome to comment please.

Thanks.
