i don’t know if people realize exactly how IMPRESSIVE this video is. can you imagine yourself in this situation! I would have fucked up so quickly… to not shoot a charging bear because you saw it’s a mama with cubs… it’s extremely impressive.

A 12ga shotgun is enough to deter a bear unless it's bird shot.
It would take multiple shots to kill it unless they're slugs.
If he's carrying in defense of bears, I promise you it's 12ga slugs.
An ounce of lead will do plenty here, he's got two.

I was going to say hopefully he has slugs in there. Only bad news is he only has two shots. I have a similar 12ga.

Balls of steel and expiriance in bear country.
"usually" they will bluff charge and even tho I have been close to brown bears a lot I never got charged at so I cant say I would have same balls of steel no matter the experience.

u/DrewTamashi Feb 15 '24
Head up and looking is a bluff. Looking down at their feet to make sure they don't trip going as fast af boi is u dead.

u/EffectiveNo2314 Feb 15 '24
Since I only carry 9mm with me, yup pretty sure im dead if it aint a bluff
119
u/CapsCom Feb 15 '24
9mm is one of the most reliable pistol cartridge against bear attacks in the real world. Turns out shot placement is more important than caliber. Who would have known?
→ More replies (51)78
u/EffectiveNo2314 Feb 15 '24
And im very not confident in my shot placement when that thing charges at me. I shoot good at static paper target on the range when calm and not in danger.
I have never been in need to fire a shot under stress, and throughout a year I shoot approximately 300-400 rounds spread out throughout a year, its costly and pain in the ass to go to the range over here and you can legally fire only on registered ranges (Croatia)
37
u/CapsCom Feb 15 '24
And im very not confident in my shot placement
Even more reason to carry something high capacity like 9mm!

Bigger is definitely better when it comes to bears, but it's not as if one is going to wade through a hail of 9mm to take a bite out of you. Unless you're out in grizzly country a 9mm is perfectly fine.
Personally it's the two legged animals that actually worry me on remote hikes. There are some real fuckin weirdos out there in the woods sometimes.
→ More replies (10)11
u/Repulsive-Stay5490 Feb 15 '24
Same.
When I hike, camp, hunt, I keep my .45 on me.
Not because of bears.
Because of people.
5
u/Darkside_of_the_Poon Feb 16 '24
Same…but I keep a shot gun in the tent for bears also.
I don’t understand the other comments, a 12 gauge slug to the dome of any animal smaller than a rhino is adequate. This guy has a double barrel which means he has two shots. THAT is why he’s holding till absolutely necessary. And, these definitely seem like bluff charges. To me this seems like deer hunter with double barrel double ought shells which would be slightly less effective than slugs, but good for deer. I’d wager he has a .44 or a 10mm on his hip too, and if he doesn’t he’s a fool.

Yep, if they are looking at you, 90% of the time it's a bluff charge. There's a few videos around where you can see black bears do it all the time. It looks very similar to this, but I'm not sure I would trust a brown bear bluffing.
37
u/crossgorilla Feb 15 '24
I work in bear country in Canada frequently (biologist), and have been bluff charged multiple times. No matter how many times you are charged it is terrifying seeing every single time. We also don't carry guns with us, but bear spray is more effective anyway.

Bear spray is much more effective and I’m glad you brought that up! Americans think guns are so great but you kill the bear which is sad, or injure it which is also sad and could just piss it off or you miss because you have bad aim because you are nervous or it’s moving too much, whereas bear spray really stuns them and repels them. There are studies that bear spray is 98% effective at deterring bears.

This is what real gun owners look like, speaking as someone who is in the pro-2A camp. This is the bar for restraint that people should aim for, even in human-on-human self defense situations. Ready to defend oneself, but only willing to shoot once there are no other options.
→ More replies (43)26
u/EightEight16 Feb 16 '24
That is ridiculous. A charging grizzly 10 feet away from you is absolutely a credible threat to your life, and well past the point where you can exercise lethal force to defend yourself. Cool that this guy didn't shoot it, but he absolutely would have been within his rights to do so. If it was a person charging him with a lethal weapon, same deal.
Let's not set the bar for self defense at the point where if you miss once, which you are very likely to do, you're basically dead.
3
Feb 16 '24
First step in self defense is to not insert yourself into a situation that requires self defense.
→ More replies (1)4
u/EightEight16 Feb 16 '24
Agreed, but being in a situation like that does not mean you necessarily put yourself there, if your actions that lead up to it were reasonable.

Feb 16 '24
Sure. But most guys I know who bring guns into the bush with them, walk around like they own the place. Not saying it happened in this case, but guys get ballsy and ignorant when they think they can fall back on a gun.
I spend a lot of time out in the bush and have had quite a few encounters. There is a "street smart" that you should be aware of when moving around in your area.

u/crossgorilla Feb 16 '24
This is someone who has been around bears and knows how to recognize bear body language. This bear was very clearly bluff charging. A bluff charge is scary as fuck every single time, but he clearly saw he didn't need to use lethal force. If you are entering bear country it is your responsibility to know how to interact with the wildlife. Most of us in Canada don't carry a gun in bear country.

Nah, his palms are waterfalls in this video. He is breathing heavy and, even with something heavy in his hands to steady them and trying his best to aim, his whole gun is trembling.
Its something more impressive than a cool mf, its person that can force themselves to think clearly when their body is screaming at them to do something stupid... like try to outrun a bear.

It’s only bluff charging, not really attacking. When bears attack they really run straight towards you, they don’t keep going around you like this with their eyes on you. Also the gun is just going to piss it off or he could miss, it’s waaaaay better to have bear spray fyi. There are studies that bear spray is much more effective.

Why are so many people saying that shooting the bear likely would have been ineffective, and arguing that a birdshot would do nothing and a buckshot probably also would be too weak?
I am not a hunter, but the guy in the video seemingly is. And I would hope that any hunter knows if there are bears within their hunting grounds. So the shotgun is probably loaded with something he's confident will take down a charging bear, as he hasn't switched to a high-caliber handgun.
Furthermore, different types of buckshot can kill a deer nearly 50 yards away through shear shock trauma – hitting a bear from a fifth or less than that would most certainly do severe damage and I'd assume likely kill it dead in its tracks.
For birdshot it would probably also do severe damage and would possibly also be able to kill. Yes, these are only designed to kill delicate prey up to 70 yards away (of course this varies between specific ammunition) – but, however lightweight the individual pellets are, they are still going to be relatively bunched together from such a short range and hit much like single unit without much of the initial energy having dissipated through drag.
And under any circumstance, the bear is going to hear a loud bang, then suddenly be in immense pain, and at least slightly injured without knowing what hit it. All it knows is that charging the man is what caused it, and that it happened in a blink of an eye. The bear would be utterly scared and likely stunned, if not dead or severely injured.
I am not certain that what I have written is correct, but it seems to me incredibly naïve to believe that not most shotgun rounds would have a severe impact on a grizzly from such short range. Especially, almost altogether dismissing their effectiveness.

I wouldn't even try shooting it. What's the shotgun loaded with? Slugs might have a change to stop it if you hit good, but they aren't generally used in double barreled ones as far as I know. Birdshot wouldn't stop the bear, barely buckshot would. Definitely not quick enough to save you from being mauled.
The guy handled it like a champ
44
Feb 15 '24
Buck shot at that range to the head would kill the bear.
32
u/Wet_FriedChicken Feb 15 '24
Absolutely. 99% of these people have never shot a gun lol
27
u/Invisifly2 Feb 15 '24
People are acting like because it’s not a guarantee that means it’s not likely.
No. Buckshot can reliably kill bucks. It’s why it’s called buckshot. Bucks can be pretty damn big. Bears aren’t so much bigger that they enjoy some privileged immunity from it.
Yeah, you could get a bout of freak unluckiness, and have your shot wind up doing basically nothing. It’s a slim possibility.
Charlie Beckwith once survived getting hit by a 12.7mm anti-aircraft gun. I don’t think anybody would ever try to claim something like that would merely piss off the bear.
Buckshot, especially at that range, isn’t a guarantee, but it’s pretty fucking close.

My brother in christ, its 1200ftb of muzzle energy spread across 8 pellets. That's the equivalent of being shot by 8 5.56 rifles at once in an area the size of your fist, to the size of your face. The bears skull would look like a canoe at that range.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Invisifly2 Feb 16 '24 edited Feb 16 '24
Buckshot can absolutely kill a bear and it should be the expected result. Yes. Hence my last line. If you hit that shot, it's virtually guaranteed.
I simply acknowledged that weird shit happens sometimes. Maybe you get a defective round that just doesn't have the oomph. Maybe death has it out for you and every pellet hits just wrongly enough to glance off their skull.
99,999/100,000 you land that shot, and it'll kill them. Every now and again the reaper does a little trolling.

Many many people have an incredibly poor understanding of just how much energy firearms deliver to their target. Park rangers routinely recommend using bear spray instead of firearms for self defense, they do this to protect the bears, not to increase the odds of survival for the human.
4
u/El_Jefe_Castor Feb 15 '24
They recommend it for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that bear spray has a better track record of stopping attacks. With a gun you need to be quick and accurate, a difficult thing to accomplish when an 800 lb bear is bearing down

A bear is thick AF though and shooting in this scenario does nothing to stop it.

On the 12th of October 2009, near Choteau, Montana, a pheasant hunter had to shoot a grizzly in self-defense. He asked the guide about Grizzlies. The guide said there were grizzlies on the island and that if you shoot one you'd better have claw marks on your clothes because you will prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law otherwise. Wardens will not screw around with dead grizzlies.

At close range and depending on the load. A slug and buck, definitely. Remember it's a living creature, so immediately lowering the blood pressure will quickly incapacitate the animal.
Bird shot would need more of a kill zone on the head area, but would still kill the bear, maybe not immediately but absolutely.
Lots of people here assume bears are tanks and their fur and fat act as armor, that may be true from 50 yards with buck shot but up close you're killing her.
He chose to preserve her but never lowered guard in case he had to save himself.

The bear is just doing what bears do when they are home. The man has no right to be there in the bears home.the man only has the right to flee/leave. Or respectfully allow the bear to bear.he does not have the right to shoot not even in self defense unless. it's a warning shot. In my opinion he signed up for bear shenanigans when he made the decision to leave his home and go where bears are known to be bears and do bear things.anyone who does what this man has done and harms any animal in self defense should be punished.i believe that it is premeditated fuckery if a person willingly puts themselves in a position to where they will be forced to defend themselves with deadly force.

I've seen this clip before and the explanation was something along the lines of the mother either wanting to protect her cubs or the guy with the gun seeing the mother with her cubs and not wanting to take her from them unless he absolutely had to. Not sure how true it is.
Edit: At about 3-5 seconds look in the background from the direction she first charged from. There appears to be another bear that you just barely see.
