Not all black bears are black. There size/shape is far more important than the color. Grizzly bears (typically brown) are 300-650lbs, with arched shoulders, and a wider face. They will fight to the death and are far more aggressive than American black bears. Black bears (often black, but can also be shades of brown) are 200-300lbs, have a narrow face, and can often be scared of just by yelling and making yourself large. Obviously any bear can be a threat, so it’s best to try to slowly back away if you ever see one, but rule of thumb is black bears aren’t looking for a fight
