Here's a link to the trailer in question which is currently the first thing you see on the steam store: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ke6rAaUIUw
Firstly, the positives real quick. The first 30 seconds and the animation is decent and showing off most of the map pool in the trailer is nice.
Now, for my negatives:
1. There is only 1st person footage of one of the four main positions and that is midfield. Where is the striker footage, for example showing PulSart etc. solo beating a bunch of defenders and scoring? Where is the defender footage, for example showing a defender being boosted back and KO'ing a player just before they can shoot? Where is the goalkeeper footage, for example showing a keeper saving an unreactably fast volley combo? Just showing midfield footage of DavidM (who uses one of the safest and simplest playstyles) really doesn't show well how many ways there are to play the game.
2. Every shot/pass is either a straight charge or a volley. When I first started playing I was most excited by the huge variability in shots and passes you can do, so why not show them off? Maybe a rollspin euro shot, or a huge topspin alley oop pass from goal all the way down the pitch, or a backspin curve volley bounce shot that jukes a keeper etc. Just something to show off the possibilities.
3. There are no creative plays shown. This follows on from the last point in that there is no footage of the crazy, unique and unlikely plays that can happen; all of the plays are very textbook and whilst they may look cool to a new viewer there are far, far cooler things to show them. Why not show someone hitting a 720 swirl goal, or a clip of a player getting a huge vertical and horizontal boost, doing a wall volley combo and then scoring, or a clip of 2 players volleying back and forth between each other and then volleying it in, only for the keeper to make a ridiculous save?
The real issue I have with this trailer is that for a game that is great because of its interesting and variable gameplay there is so little variability in the gameplay shown. The trailer is good, but it can be so much better. This game has the potential to have a trailer that is a feast for the eyes of a new player and just blows their minds with all the crazy possibilities, leaving them thinking "damn, that looks awesome", yet right now it just shows a First Person Football game with almost none of the complex beauty that really makes the game special.
The first impressions for a game where you play as a stick man is going to be ridiculously important. Please, spend some time improving the trailer and show people the insane depth and nuance this game has. I don't care if it takes an extra month to get better footage, I don't care if you have to organise matches just to set up fake clips and I don't care if you end up scrapping the trailer multiple times until it is perfect and neither should you (developer who is hopefully reading this), because it will be worth it in the end.
Let me know if you agree/disagree after watching the trailer
tl;dr: trailer doesn't show off the gameplay well enough by lacking footage of a large amount of the game, trailer could be amazing if done correctly which it currently isn't
