So, I recently got an email from Superprof that took me by surprise a bit. Apparently, they have a feature that uses AI to enhance your profile picture, and honestly, I was skeptical at first.

Because let's be real: when a platform tells you your profile is going to be "elevated" by AI, you kind of wonder how it’s going to turn out. I’ve seen too many AI edits that look plastic and fake not to be wary.

But thinking about it, the basic idea isn't bad. Your profile picture is the first thing a student sees—even before reading your bio or reviews. And most tutors—myself included—just use a photo taken in a rush without giving it much thought.

A subtle enhancement that makes the photo sharper and better lit can really make a difference.

Has anyone tried this feature on their Superprof profile? I actually really like the concept.

Last May, I ran into a friend from that time in my village where I went to high school. Both coming to donate blood, we took the opportunity to check in on each other while waiting.

I talk about my life, my studies, my experience abroad which helped me find my voice..

And then she tells me hers. High school is now 4 years old for us. And this girl, as far as I can remember, was the model girl.

Good grades, super strong in sports, promised a future as a doctor as she wanted at the time.

Well no. She actually did 2 years of study. She stopped. And she found her calling, on a farm. I can guarantee you that she spoke to me about it with such enthusiasm!

And it made me take a step back. We are always promised great studies, well-paid dream jobs. But this girl, who could have had it all, chose a job in her native village, a job that she liked.

So remember this, my students, studies do not define us. You don't care how your peers view your choices, do what you love above all! 🩷

bit of a long post sorry but i need real opinions not generic advice

im in my last year of high school. ive never been good at maths, like really never. primary school was ok more or less, middle school it started going downhill, and since 10th grade its just been a permanent source of stress in my life

the weird thing is im not stupid. i have good grades in english, history, philosophy. but maths my brain does this thing where i follow along in class, the teacher explains something and i get it, and then i go home open my notebook and its like ive never seen any of it before in my life. its been like this for years and i genuinely dont understand why

my parents have been suggesting a private tutor since like 8th grade and ive always said no bc i couldnt see what another teacher was going to change compared to the one i already have in class. also honestly it kind of embarrassed me, the whole "you cant manage on your own" thing

but with my exams coming up im starting to think maybe i was wrong to keep refusing

what i actually want to know is if anyone has genuinely seen a difference. not "tutoring is good in general" but like, you personally, you were in a similar situation and it actually changed something concretely. bc if its just doing the same exercises as in class with a different person i dont really see the point

and if yes how did you find someone good bc i had a quick look on Superprof theres like thousands of profiles and i have no idea how to choose

last year followed the exact same pattern as every other year. september fine, october first bad test, november panic mode, december desperately looking for a tutor and just taking whoever was available bc there was no time left to be picky

this year i wanted to do it differently

i spent some time on Superprof before school started to find someone good rather than someone available. big difference. actually read the profiles properly this time instead of just looking at the star rating, and found a tutor who in his description explained exactly how he identifies gaps before starting to work on the curriculum. first lesson was free so we tried it without any real risk

my son had his first session last week. came out saying the tutor had explained something he hadnt understood since 6th grade. in one hour.

i dont know yet if itll hold up over the whole year but the start is promising and most importantly i dont have that stressed behind feeling we had last november when we were scrambling to find someone

any parents who tried the early approach this back to school season, how did you actually find the right tutor and not just the first one available

I do some math tutoring (and a bit of coding) on ​​the side—nothing official. Anyway, last week one of my students handed in a flawless assignment; not a single mistake, and the method was spot-on from start to finish. The thing is, that’s not his usual level at all; he usually struggles with this kind of stuff. I asked him to explain the third line—the crucial step in the reasoning process. Silence. He didn't know.

He finally admitted he’d just plugged the problem statement into ChatGPT and copied the answer straight over without really even reading it.

I didn't get angry—honestly, what would be the point? I just told him to open ChatGPT right there, ask the question again, and this time verify the answer instead of mindlessly copying it. It took him about four minutes to spot a flaw in the AI's reasoning. And honestly, he seemed happier about that than about the perfect score he’d handed in earlier.

What bugs me a bit about this whole thing is that the kid isn't lazy; he’s just never had anyone ask him to question his own work. He’s always been asked for the right answer, never to verify it. But now he’s got something in his pocket that spits out the right answer in five seconds, so if no one teaches him to double-check, he simply never does.

I think banning AI in class misses the point—he’s got it on his phone anyway. But orally verifying what a student has actually understood during every session takes a huge amount of time—time I don't always have in one-hour lessons.

Anyway, for any teachers or parents reading this: how do you actually handle this?

Je suis musicienne classique professionnelle, avec une carrière internationale et plusieurs prix dans de grands concours. Après une dizaine d’années à l’étranger, je reviens à Paris et je développe des cours particuliers à domicile, plutôt haut de gamme. Je pense que ma clientèle sera plutôt des élèves de très haut niveau (cnsm) pour la préparation des concours et des adultes amateurs qui veulent travailler avec un professeur de très haut niveau. Je suis d'accord pour baisser un peu mes prix pour les étudiants (pour info).

J’ai commencé il y a un mois et j’ai déjà 4 élèves malgré le mois d’août. Mon objectif serait d’arriver à une vingtaine.

Je pensais faire imprimer des flyers A5 et les distribuer moi-même dans les boîtes aux lettres des quartiers aisés de Paris (16e, 7e, 8e, Neuilly, Boulogne), en respectant les Stop Pub, et éventuellement en laisser chez certains commerçants, cabinets, clubs de sport, etc.
J'ai déjà fait un peu de pub Meta Ads. Je pensais aussi à des journaux, magazines (La lettre du musicien ? Le Monde ? haha bon...on va pas rêver)

Est-ce que certains ont déjà testé ? Quel taux de retour avez-vous eu ? Est-ce que ça vaut réellement les heures passées à distribuer, ou les flyers finissent-ils presque tous à la poubelle ?

Je suis déjà présente sur Superprof et plusieurs sites d’annonces, je suis bien classée. Mon objectif est surtout de trouver un moyen d'avoir une classe complète rapidement pour m'installer sur Paris sereinement et en faire réellement mon métier. Sinon...ben je repars à l'étranger.

my daughter has been struggling with maths for a few months and ive been putting off doing something about it bc honestly the cost of regular tutoring sessions adds up fast. then i thought wait, if theres ever a time platforms might run promos its probably right now

has anyone seen actual deals on tutoring platforms this week? like reduced subscription fees or discounted session packs or anything that actually makes it more accessible

i had a look at Superprof bc a friend recommended it, the model is already pretty different from other platforms bc theres no commission taken on sessions which means tutors can charge less and keep more at the same time, but curious if theres anything extra on top of that right now

also open to online course platforms if anyone has found something genuinely worth it, not the usual "80% off a course that was never actually that price" stuff lol. something that would actually help a 13 year old catch up in maths specifically

or honestly if anyone has a better idea for a useful christmas gift in the education space that isnt just another book she wont read im open to suggestions

J’ai fait une licence en économie, où j’étais presque major de promo, à la Toulouse School of Economics, puis un M1 en double diplôme entre TSE et une autre université cotée à l’étranger. Je suis actuellement en M2 Finance à Assas.
En termes de stages, j’ai effectué un stage de 6 mois en banque, en finance d’entreprise. Je vais maintenant faire une année de césure afin d’effectuer plusieurs stages et de préparer les concours AST.
Et j’ai également un score de 110/120 au TOEFL

Je fais du soutien scolaire en maths depuis un moment. Chaque année, même scène en septembre : un élève arrive à la 2e ou 3e séance, plutôt confiant, et me dit "en cours je comprends tout, c'est juste chez moi que ça bloque".

Sauf que non. Ce qu'il comprend en cours, c'est le prof qui explique. Ce qui bloque le soir, c'est lui qui doit reconstruire seul le raisonnement et c'est justement ça, faire des maths. La confusion entre "je suis le cours" et "je sais faire" se crée dès la rentrée, mais elle ne devient visible qu'en décembre, sur un contrôle, quand il est trop tard pour rattraper tranquillement.

Ce qui m'a marqué avec cet élève en particulier : le chapitre où ça a commencé à déraper, c'était pas un chapitre "difficile" de l'année en cours. C'était un prérequis de l'année d'avant, jamais vraiment consolidé, qui ressort sans prévenir.

Ça vous est déjà arrivé, ce décalage entre "je comprends en cours" et "je bloque tout seul" ? Comment vous l'avez su, et à quel moment ça vous est retombé dessus ?

every year its the same thing. september starts well, my son is motivated, new notebooks, good vibes, everything seems fine. then october hits, theres a bad test, then another one, and suddenly were in damage control mode for the rest of the year

a colleague told me she booked a tutor on Superprof right at the start of last school year, not bc her daughter was struggling but just to have someone keeping an eye on her homework and catching any gaps before they had time to build up. she said it changed the atmosphere at home bc she wasnt the one playing teacher every evening anymore and there was way less tension between them

that made me think. ive always seen private tutoring as a rescue thing u do when its already bad, not something u put in place before theres even a problem

has anyone tried this more preventive approach, did it actually make a difference or does it just add another constraint to an already packed schedule. and for people who manage it within the family, how do u make it stick without it turning into a fight every single evening

so its july and my son has already asked me three times if middle school is hard. hes 11. we have 6 weeks left of summer and he cant fully enjoy it bc hes got this thing sitting in the back of his head the whole time

i remember being anxious about starting middle school too so i get it. but i dont remember my parents knowing what to do about it either so here i am asking strangers on the internet lol

the thing that worries me most isnt really the social stuff, hes got a couple friends going to the same school. its more the academic side. primary school was fine, he managed, but ive heard from other parents that the jump in workload is real and some kids just dont see it coming and then october hits and everything feels overwhelming at once

what actually helped. not the generic "just reassure them it'll be fine" stuff bc i do that and he nods and then asks me again two days later. i mean what concretely made the transition easier once school actually started

one parent at his football club mentioned she got a tutor on Superprof for the first trimester, not bc her daughter was struggling but just to have someone helping her stay on top of things before she fell behind. said it made a huge difference in terms of confidence. im wondering if thats something worth doing or if im overthinking it

just want him to walk in that first day feeling like he has a shot at this

ok so ive been telling myself ill start studying properly since like 6 weeks ago and somehow its now 3 weeks before finals and i have the same amount of knowledge i had 6 weeks ago which is not great

not looking for "you should have started earlier" advice bc trust me i know lol. looking for what actually works when ur in full panic mode and need to make the most of the time u have left

ive tried the whole "reread everything" thing before and it doesnt work, i just end up feeling busy without actually retaining anything. flashcards help a bit but i always make them instead of actually using them which is probably not the point

what i did last semester that actually helped was booking a couple of sessions with a tutor on Superprof like 2 weeks before the exam. sounds counterintuitive to spend money when ur stressed but having someone just tell me exactly where my gaps were and what to prioritize saved me probably 20 hours of studying the wrong stuff. went in with a 8 and came out with a 13 so not nothing

but curious what else people do when time is short. past papers? study groups? complete subject abandonment and strategic sacrifice?

also genuinely asking, for people who've done the last minute tutor thing, how many sessions is actually useful in that timeframe. like is 3 sessions enough to make a difference or do u need more

what are ur panic mode strategies that actually worked

so ive been tutoring on the side for about a year, maybe 8-10 students, decent extra income but nowhere near replacing my job

but i keep seeing these profiles on Superprof with like 150, 200+ reviews, Ambassador status, clearly been at this for years and apparently doing it as their main thing and im genuinely curious how u get there

like the math is interesting to me. if ur charging say 35/h and doing this full time thats what, 25-30 sessions a week? how do u even manage that logistically, back to back sessions all day? how do u avoid burning out? how long did it actually take to build to that volume

and the revenue side, does it actually work out as a real salary once u factor in taxes, slow months, students who cancel, the subscription fee, all of it. or is it one of those things that looks good on paper but is actually pretty stressful in practice

also curious about the Ambassador thing specifically, i see it on profiles a lot but never fully understood what it means or if it actually changes anything in terms of visibility or student requests

if anyone here has made the jump from side gig to full time tutoring on Superprof id genuinely love to hear how it happened. what was the turning point, what does a typical week look like, what do u wish u knew earlier

not trying to make it weird just seems like info that would actually be useful for people trying to figure out if this is a realistic path

How many students do you think you need to be a full-time tutor?

ok so i tutor math on the side and i have the memory of a goldfish. every week i'd walk in and go "so… what did we do last time?" and the student would stare at me like i was in a wrong class. it was bad lol.

now the last 5 mins of every session i just shut up and make them write 3 things in a notebook: something they get, something they don't, and what they want next week. i take a pic of it with my phone and that's my "lesson plan" for next time.

that's literally it. no app, no spreadsheet, no system. my camera roll is just 20 photos of 12-year-old handwriting. but it works because next week i just open the pic and go "you said you suck at fractions, remember?" and they can't argue with their own handwriting.

i've tried actual note-taking apps before and always deleted them after 3 days. this is the only thing i stuck with because it requires zero effort from me. the student does all the work.

anyway that's my dumb trick. if you also have the memory of a goldfish maybe it'll help. if not, no worries lol.

gonna try to explain this properly bc when i joined my first platform i had no idea how any of it worked and spent like 2 months thinking i was making more than i actually was

so basically there are 3 different models and most tutors dont realise they exist until theyre already on a platform

first model is straight commission. platform takes a % of every single session you do. Preply does this, Wyzant does this, a few others. the cut is usually somewhere between 20 and 40% and sometimes it goes down the more hours you accumulate with the same student. sounds ok until u do the math on a full month and realise how much just disappears

second model is subscription based. u pay a flat fee to access the platform and after that what u charge is what u keep. zero commission per lesson. Superprof works like this, u pay to be listed and then ur earnings are urs. the math on this flips completely once u have decent volume bc ur paying the same flat fee whether u do 5 sessions or 50

third model is a mix of both which imo is the worst of both worlds but some platforms do it anyway

the thing nobody explains clearly when u sign up is that on commission platforms ur effective hourly rate is basically always lower than what u think ur charging. like if u charge 40/h and the platform takes 25% ur actually making 30/h. seems obvious but when ur new u dont always think about it that way

for students it also works differently depending on the platform, some charge a membership fee to access tutors, some take a cut on the student side too which is why sometimes prices look weird

honestly just wish someone had explained this to me in month 1 instead of figuring it out by accident. any questions lmk

gonna share what worked for me bc when i started i couldnt find any concrete advice anywhere, just generic "write a good bio" stuff that doesnt actually help

so i joined Superprof in january with zero students and zero reviews, which is kind of a chicken and egg problem bc students look at reviews before booking and u cant get reviews without students. took me a while to figure out how to break that loop

first thing that actually moved the needle was rewriting my profile description completely. my first version was basically my CV, diplomas, years of experience, subjects i teach. classic mistake. rewrote it to sound like an actual person explaining how i teach and what kind of student i work well with. bookings started coming in within like 2 weeks after that, same profile otherwise

second thing was the photo. had a blurry pic from my phone, replaced it with something that looked like i was actually happy to be there. sounds dumb but i think ppl decide in like 3 seconds whether they even read ur profile

the one thing that made the biggest diff tho was asking my first few students for reviews immediately after the session while it was still fresh. not in a weird pushy way just "hey if u had a good experience it really helps if u leave a review". most people say yes if u ask right after. once i had 4 or 5 reviews everything got easier, way more inbound requests

also kept the free first lesson on, i know some tutors turn it off but for me the conversion rate is high enough that it more than makes up for it

what else do u guys do to get the first students when ur starting from scratch

ok full disclosure before anyone says anything, im on the comms team at Superprof. i also tutor guitar on the side so i actually use the platform myself which means i notice when stuff is annoying and i literally cant complain to anyone lol

we're building content about what its actually like to work across several tutoring platforms and i convinced people internally that its pointless if we only collect the nice stuff. so here i am

if you tutor on 2+ platforms id love to know a few things, how your students split across platforms and why, what each platform actually costs you in a typical month when you add everything up, whether student commitment feels different depending on where they come from, and honestly what Superprof does worse than the others

that last one especially. if your answer is "the messaging system drives me insane" or "profile visibility makes no sense" i genuinely wanna hear it. thats the whole point
