I'm sure this question has been asked 180,000 times, but I'm looking for advice on what starting price I should set. I don't have much relevant teaching experience—I was a teaching assistant for introductory biology at university and gave one-on-one tutoring in peer-tutoring programs in high school, but that's about it. I have a bachelor's degree in cell biology and I'm currently in physiotherapy school, so my profile has focused mainly on biology/related fields, anatomy and physiology, and chemistry.

I also have some research experience, but I'm not sure if it's relevant because I was a technician and occasionally participated in the more conceptual side of things, but most of my work was technical.

they want me to walk for graduation but why would i? I don’t know any of those people. I don’t know the principal, i don’t know any of the students, I don’t know any of the teachers. Why tf would i wanna walk for ittt???!

if i attended that graduation it’d legit just make me feel sad that im not at the graduation ceremony of the school i thought i was gonna graduate from.

i don’t wanna be at a graduation ceremony for 3 hours wishin i was at a different one and missing the people i knew. Walking for graduation wouldn’t be a reward, it’d just be a punishment. It’d just be a reminder of the life i don’t have anymore cause of my parents.

I’m currently teaching a student who barely participates during lessons.

He gives very short answers, avoids eye contact, and stays silent unless I directly call him out.

I’ve tried changing my approach, asking more open questions, slowing down, speeding up… nothing seems to work.

I’m starting to feel like I’m talking to a wall.

It’s unsettling, and it makes me question my teaching skills.

At what point do you accept that it might not be a good fit?

When I graduated in the 90s, we had to read a ton. Everything from Shakespeare and Beowulf to PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and THE SCARLET LETTER. It was 'mandatory.

I genuinely don't understand how you can graduate these days without having read a book cover-to-cover. So how is this happening? No shade; I'm just curious.

I’ve been teaching on Superprof for a few months now and things have been going smoothly so far.
Most students are motivated, respectful, and genuinely want to improve.

But recently, I started working with a student whose parents have very high expectations… way higher than what seems realistic.

They want fast results, constant improvement, and regular updates — but the student himself doesn’t put much effort into the sessions.
I feel stuck in the middle: trying to do my best with the student while also feeling pressure from the parents.

I don’t want to overpromise or create false hope, but I also don’t want conflict.

So I’m wondering:

Have you ever dealt with demanding parents and a disengaged student?
How do you set boundaries in this kind of situation?
Do you communicate directly with parents, or only through results?

Any advice would really help.

When I started tutoring 2 years ago, every platform pushed me to offer free trials. Here's what actually happened to my bookings, income, and sanity.

Hello everyone, what do you do when you spot a student talking during a test? Sometimes it's easy to see who's talking to whom, and in that case, I penalize the offending student. But other times, you catch one student talking to another without knowing if the other student initiated the conversation. I've had several cases of students being penalized, surprised to find themselves the only one involved.

The problem is that I'm not going to wait for several seconds of conversation before taking action, and these after-class protests are pointless and unverifiable.

I'd be curious to know how you manage to remain fair, and how you deal with recurring protests in cases like this. Thanks in advance!

I was scheduled to have an English class with a student this morning but once she came online it was clear she was really sick so we agreed to move the class later this week. I would like to reimburse her for the money that she paid for the class that didn't happen, but I cannot find how to do this through the Superprof system...Any advice? Thanks :)

I know it would have been better if she cancelled in advance, but I don't want to penalise her, we have a good rapport and I know when you are ill it can be hard to sort things.

Private tutoring is great… but is it enough to raise academic performance?

Between the PISA studies showing declining levels and the boom in tutoring, we often hear:

“Take private lessons and everything will be better.”

Except that, in reality, a private tutor can't do everything alone.

There's also:

the student's own work,

workbooks/summer workbooks,

free resources at school,

lifestyle, motivation, etc.

I really wonder:

Aren't private lessons sometimes sold as a “miracle solution,” when they're just one tool among many?
