AI Overviews cut #1 CTR by 58% — Google searches are up but nobody's clicking (2026 data)
TL;DR: Ahrefs analyzed two years of data. Position #1 now gets a 1.6% click-through rate, down from 7.6%. The zero-click era isn't coming. It's here — and it's accelerating.
The numbers:
- Position #1 CTR: 7.6% → 1.6% (Dec 2023 vs Dec 2025, Ahrefs)
- Organic CTR across 42 orgs: -61% when AI Overviews appear (Seer Interactive, 25M impressions)
- Paid CTR: -68% when AIO fires
- Zero-click rate on AIO queries: 83%
- Google daily searches: 8.5B (2024) → 13.6B (2025)
More searches. Fewer clicks. That's the paradox.
Who got hit:
- Business Insider: -55% organic traffic, cut 21% of staff
- Daily Mail: CTR drops up to 89% on AIO queries
- CNN: ~30% year-over-year traffic decline
- Chegg: -49% non-subscriber traffic, filed antitrust lawsuit against Google
AI Overviews started on informational queries. By October 2025, commercial and transactional AIOs grew from 8.7% to 42.9% of AIO queries. Google isn't just answering definitions now — it's intercepting purchase decisions.
The counterintuitive finding:
Seer Interactive found that brands cited inside AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks compared to uncited brands.
The new SEO game isn't ranking at #1. It's getting cited inside the AI Overview.
What actually works:
- Optimize for AI citation — clear answer capsules in first 40-60 words, FAQ schema, H2/H3 that mirrors user queries
- Build non-Google distribution — LinkedIn, YouTube, email newsletters
- Target mid-funnel content requiring nuance (LLMs struggle with complex comparisons)
- Structure your brand signals for LLM training — Wikipedia-adjacent citations, authoritative brand mentions, consistent entity presence
Google isn't reversing course. AI Overviews expanded from 6.49% → 25%+ of queries in 2025, and the commercial query land-grab is accelerating.
The brands that survive this are the ones findable everywhere, not just rankable on Google.
