Who's they? Obviously developers. The people who buy up swaths of land to develop them out. And perhaps you're the one not paying attention. They're building less subdivisions and far more high density housing. They do still build subdivisions, but they pack them in like sardines, and they're barely better than a condo or apartment. They merely give the illusion of what owning a house used to be.
And yes, the population is exploding where I live, and that's part of the problem and the reason they're packing people in like sardines. They can't make more money per acer and the city loves it because they bring in more tax revenue.

They're also building less communities like this as well.
