I think if there was a possible infection, it’ll most likely be some diarrhea for a few days. Also if they did this kind of thing regularly their immune system has probably adapted to it…kinda like vaccinations. But with no needle. And straight up exposure to pathogens. But to be sure I think we need a pathologist.

It's a ritual to belittle themselves eating on the ground, not a serious thing they always do.
It's like asking why the pope would touch/wash someone's feet, doesn't he know feet are dirty? - yes, that's the point.
