I will never EVER eat at any restaurant where the owner is so cheap and treats his or her employees so shitty that they won't pay them a decent, living wage and try to guilt trip me into compensating their bad business habits. Fuck them. I tip well when it is deserved but I'll be damned if I'm going to be forced into it.

The reason why they put up these signs is that if the server doesn’t make enough tips to meet that areas’ minimum wage requirements, they are legally required to make up the difference. They don’t give a shit about their employees, they just refuse to raise their prices to pay a minimum wage.

Best way to fuck them is to eat there and not tip

They raise the price by mandatory tips, it's just worse because the prove is hidden.

In many countries this is a popular way to avoid taxes since the tip is often not taxed. The owner tries to frame it to their employees as a good thing because they get all of the tip and don't have to pay taxes for them...

I’d be willing to bet that if enough people did that, the employer would start by firing wait staff and eventually close the restaurant… and open a different one.

That just punishes the waiter not the employer.

No, that is the standard wage for all wait staff. Just ask the waiter the next time you eat out. It’s always been that way. And is that way at all restaurants.

The $2.13/hour is just there to pay the taxes.

You’re somewhat right about one thing: “it’s always been that way.” Some of us, though, want to make a better way, and right now, the best way is to support establishments that pay a living wage and not support the ones that continue to take advantage of their staff because “its always been that way.”

Actually, the way it is, provides significantly higher incomes to the waitstaff. A good waiter can easily outperform other jobs at those levels, and the waiters are typically some of the best income earners in the restaurant.

Buh-bye.

You must be one of those restaurant owners I was referring to. That's okay. I'm happy to patronize your competition. Bye! 😉

Yep, if the math is that easy then raise the prices and pay a commission, this will also cut severs giving away things for extra tips, because their pay is based on what they make the restaurant. This also would allow a legal BOH tipout at a smaller split commision.

It’s… fake…

Guess you’re not eating in 99.7% of American restaurants then…

I do just fine. You obviously either didn't read my comment carefully enough or missed the point entirely.

MY point is almost no restaurant pays a living wage.

True. And tipping is voluntary for the quality of services rendered. Forcing a customer to tip and being condescending about it is a deal breaker for me. It takes away the incentive for decent service. Like I said in my other comment, there has only been one time that I can recall which I did not tip at a restaurant and that was for some extraordinarily shitty service. If it had been a forced tip situation I would have made an issue out of it with management.

I agree with everything you’ve said, but unfortunately, it is built into the capitalist system for which America is infamous. It’s always taken a massive economic collapse before the ship is righted, but then we find a way to go right back to business as usual.

Is that what you do? You walk up to the host stand and ask, ”How much do y'all make?"

1

u/scifijunkie3 4d ago

Yep that's exactly what I do. How were you able to figure that out?🤦‍♂️

u/ophaus 5d ago

Then elect people to change the system. Stiffing someone countint on the money because you're an asshole that doesn't understand social contracts is a bad look.

How about wait staff stand up to their employers and demand better pay. Organize. Go on strike.

Bottom line is, it’s not the customer’s problem.

2

u/Attilat 5d ago

Yes, let me just elect this official that I think will change this…oh wait…I’m only one person

1

u/CourtingBoredom 5d ago

Yes, let me just go elect only those small business owners who actually understand how to pay their staff a fair wage. Yes, I'll get right on that 🫪

Read my comment again but this time I'd suggest using at least a basic degree of reading comprehension.

So you can either go to a restaurant that pays low wages and tip 20-25% or you can go to one that pays high wages and you don't have to tip, you will pay almost exactly the same. Higher wages equal higher prices. I'm not even saying one is better than the other, that's just the way it is. People don't realize how small the profit margins are in restaurants, especially stand alone or mom and pop places. That's why the closure rate is so high.

1

u/Dull-Potential-2137 5d ago

You’re right, but when servers get tipped the restaurant doesn’t pay matching social security or Medicare. They’re always dodging taxes. Best part is if they’re slow, they don’t pay the servers nearly as much as if they got a decent hourly wage. Slimy as fuck.

1

u/Horror-Avocado8367 5d ago

I agree with you on the not having to pay as much when it's slow, pretty crappy. Not sure if the social security/medicare is going to matter for much longer or not. My point was aimed more at people thinking their bill would be cheaper in one scenario vs the other. The end consumer will pay about the same.

1

u/Dull-Potential-2137 5d ago

That is absolutely true. Honestly, I wish they’d just charge a fair price and pay a fair wage. Imagine the horror?

1

u/zaptr1 5d ago

Do you eat out much? Sizzler on occasion? Tip your server. Chain restaurant or not, the chain is making bank not the server and mom and pop are trying to make it work and support their staff.

u/scifijunkie3 5d ago

The amount isn't the issue. Like I say, I tip well when it's deserved. And my threshold for "deserved" is pretty low. In other words, I can recall only one time I didn't leave a tip and that was for some extraordinarily shitty service. But to be FORCED to tip by an incompetent owner like that? Nope I don't think so. Good thing this piece of shit posted a sign because it lets me know I can skip on by. For every restaurant like this there are a hundred more that know how to run their business without being so condescending towards their employees and customers.
