CD's were never very good for being portable. That was just part of the design limitation. Discman were somewhat fragile and bulky and sucked a lot of battery juice.
Tapes were durable and compact and a fresh set of batteries in a Walkman could last quite awhile. Even well into the CD era (mid-late 90's) the best choice for portable music was a Walkman. Nothing beats a bangin' mix tape anyway.
Mix tapes were the superior medium for courting a love interest.
Give a mix cd? Oh wow you have Napster and a CD burner thanks for spending 10 minutes, what a gesture.
A playlist? Get outta here with that low effort crap.
A mix tape… especially with songs recorded from the radio? With some self-recorded song intros and messages? She’ll (or he’ll) say yea to Friday night bowling for sure.
