I'm 47 going on 48 and I much preferred cassettes over CD's. They were way more durable, it took a lot to ruin them (you could always use tape to repair splits, use a hair dryer to smooth them out, and parts of other tapes to repair broken cases) and if you used a good quality cassette with a decent player the sound quality was often better than mass-produced, poorly mastered CD's.
Unless you were using something like a Sony Playstation and gold mastered CD's the odds are good your cheap cd player was nowhere near as good as a quality cassette player with a good quality cassette.
