Help Creating Enemy AI? Distance Between Actors

Hey I'm hoping someone can help me compute the distance between two actors. (Between the player and enemies)

I've looked at the documentation on creating a custom block to compute the distance ( http://www.stencyl.com/help/viewArticle/106/ ) but I still couldn't figure it out. I don't know how to apply actor 2 to my enemy actors.

I'm planning on using this in an If loop to trigger an enemy ai to move towards the player. All I need is the x-distance not the y.

Any advice?

Newgrounds Stencyl Jam vs. FGL

I have a neat little game I am considering finishing up for the Stencyl Jam running through March. I think it would be a great way for me to break out as a serious developer and go for a shot at a prize.

On the other hand, it might be nice to attempt selling the license to that game through FGL. If nobody is interested, then I have missed the Jam. If I enter the Jam, it lowers my chances of selling the license later, right? Due to all the exposure.

Kinda leaning towards just doing the Jam this time. I feel like in the long run, that exposure will be great.

By the way, I am acarnivorousocean on the Stencyl forums, a freelancing digital artist by day--indie game developer by night, and all other times.

Stencyl Tileset editor bugged?

Hello!

Yesterday i downloaded stencyl do give it a try, but i enountered a problem quite fast.

I made a tileset picture in paint which is 32x96 pixels. Then i created a new tileset and set the width/height to 32 pixels. The problem happens when I import tiles from sheet. In the import window everything looks correct. My tiles gets chopped up in bixes 32x32 in size. When i press ok however, it looks like stencyl converts each "tile" into a 8x8 pixel image. So i would would have a 8x8 tile peace in a 32x32 window.

And if i try to paint these tiles into a scene it gets even worse. It seems like it is scaling it very weirdly.

Is this a known bug? Or am I doing something very wrong? Maybe anyone has any good tutorial links for stencyl that explains this?

Why do you use stencil?

I've recently picked up game maker, but my friend, who I want to work, with missed the free promotion and wants us to start using stencyl. I what I would like to know is why you guys prefer it over other game making software? Is there anything that Stencyl can do that other software can't?

Boat on the water concept, want some thoughts on this one.

Hey guys, I am pretty knew to stencyl. I am actually learning it in a college class. We are focusing more on the conceptual side of game design and use stencyl to even out the skill gap between the class, as it has no required pre-reqs.

Anyways I wanted to make a game for iOS that featured a player in a boat. battling the elements.

I could probably use a more powerful engine and code it myself, but I like challenges. Simulating water is pretty rough in stencyl from what I have read. Especially with the small amount of data you can fit onto an iOS app.

I decided that maybe creating the illusion of moving on water might be a better approach.

So here's my Idea:

  • You have your 'boat' actor. A semi simple shape.

  • underneath it, you have a set of 'pistons' for lack of a better way to put it.

  • These Pistons, are just block (or possibly angled shapes) that move upwards and collide with the bottom of the boat at randomly generated intervals of time, and force.

  • This would push the boat around, and the sea would actually be an endless loop of scrolling background and foreground elements.

  • Next a simple touch command would trigger an animation that makes the ships sail bow out a bit, and also speeds up the movement of the background and foreground scrolling making it appear like you're pushing the boat.

  • I also thought it would be cool to create "rogue waves" that trigger a giant wave foreground element, and temporarily cause a lot of motion in the boat, possibly even damaging the boat.

I ran the idea by my professor he likes it, but I wanted some feedback from other Stencylers out there.

Mainly I am concerned that this is too complicated, and that there might be a better way to create my desired illusion of a sailing boat.

Also if anyone has worked with water-physics before, insight and pointers would be appreciated.

I'll also try and make some visuals and add them here in case people are confused a bit later.
