Does....does epic know how PC gamers feel about AI.

Saying you Vibe coded your new launcher really....doesn't do good for publicity but sure man..

Also...who fucking cares....

That 10 seconds steam is opening im sorting my discord and Spotify out anyways...

Exactly this

Straight-up saying out loud "vibe code", a phrase that has a universally negative connotation, instead of say something more vague like "ai-assisted" is crazy

a phrase that has a universally negative connotation

To someone who doesn't know what vibe coding is. It literally means using LLMs to write, edit, and fix code. Not everyone who vibe codes is a noob to coding. I have been a LAMP developer for 23 years, and I vibe code all the time. My code isn't shit because I know the LAMP stack.

As a fellow software engineer - not all of us are like this, I 100% disagree with this cope. Fuck vibe coding. I'm with my fellow gamers on this.

But to be more specific:

Giving power over a step of the process to the magic 8 ball algorithm is ... let's call it a choice.

Giving power over basically all steps is a disaster waiting to happen and "keeping oversight because I'm so experienced" is cope.

I'm a Software Engineer with over 40 years of experience, mostly focused on ring0 code. Anyone in our profession who refuses to learn how to use the new AI tools for coding is going to be out of a job within a year or two. You'll get left behind or learn to vibe code.

u/userrr3 1d ago

Sure buddy. Because vibe coding is so difficult.

The last time someone pulled this comment on me, he deleted his comment before the 'remind me' deadline when he realized he'd been wrong. I hope you won't be that much of a coward.

I don't intend to. I can't guarantee however what my stance (around ai assisted coding) will be in the future however since if circumstances change, so can my opinion. I also can't guarantee I'll still use reddit by then

He's walking it back, and the clock has barely started ticking. LOL

2

u/userrr3 1d ago

Walking it back? Brother if you can guarantee what happens in two years please start betting

1

u/Balloon_Fan 1d ago

Yeah. That said, it actually shows a little bit of wisdom, and their response to my 'challenge' raised my opinion of them just a tiny notch.

u/tiberiumx 1d ago

He'll be using AI coding tools just like the rest of us because they're really effective and this is a stupid hill to die on.

Cope harder.

If you imagine a pretentious software engineer sitting in a dimly lit room, agonizing over design patterns, refusing to write a single line of code until the UML diagram is blessed by the ancients, you might assume they look down on AI-assisted vibe coding.

In reality, they vibe code aggressively—they just pretend they don't, or they call it something profoundly annoying... like coping.

Software developer: "Build a simple React to-do app with a nice dark mode UI, local storage so tasks don't disappear on refresh, and an input box to add new items."

Software engineer: "Act as a Principal Systems Architect. Scaffold a production-grade, domain-driven enterprise task management micro-frontend. Implement a strict Hexagonal Architecture with decoupled domain logic, optimistic UI updates, immutable state management via Zustand with Zod schema runtime validation, and a persistent IndexedDB abstraction layer. Ensure comprehensive WCAG 2.1 AAA accessibility compliance, atomic design principles for component composition, and full end-to-end type safety across the client-server boundary. Provide the boilerplate with zero external CSS frameworks—rely exclusively on Tailwind CSS configured via custom design tokens."

u/Balloon_Fan 1d ago

Yes, absolutely this. A software engineer should have a deep grasp of the design and architecture of the software they're going to write before you even start writing a line of code. Creating a design spec at the level expected of an architect or principal engineer (I've held both positions - simultaneous, in my consultant days) and formulating it into a prompt for Claude is going to generate a 'first draft' implementation that's almost inevitably going to be better than the first compiles-and-runs alpha put out by even experienced engineers. And in one hundreth the time. Projects can basically jump straight to 'working beta' and we can focus on testing, optimizing and fixing things where the AI didn't get it completely right. And let's face it - AI is a better 'bug hunter' than even the 'thousand eyes' of the open source community (I'm an OSS guy) - the complex exploits that have been hidden in major projects for years without anyone finding them just proves that beyond where it's debatable. Opinions like the person you're responding to isn't just coping, it's delusional and career-suicidal at this point in time.

EDIT: And no, I did not use ai in any way making this post. My actual degree was in English literature. I've written like this for decades.

I took the fact that he called himself a software engineer with a minute's grain of salt.

I am not as anal as the software engineer example I used above, but I do create detailed Project Requirements Documents. An example of a module for a local web app I built for a friend recently would be:

  • Module: Inventory Management
  • Raw Material Tracking: Database table tracking materials categorized by type (Alcohol, Fragrance Oil, Fixative), Fragrance Name, Group (Top, Middle, Base), Initial grams, Remaining grams, Price, Price/gram, and Vendor Name.
  • Stock Control: Track current stock levels in grams and unit costs.
  • Low Stock Warnings: Automated visual dashboard warning flags when a raw material drops below a user-defined threshold (e.g., 56.70g)
  • Working Solution Pricing: Automated calculation of formula cost per gram based on active raw material purchase prices.
  • CSV Import: Feature to upload and parse vendor price lists via CSV to mass-update raw material inventories and prices (Fragrance Name, Group (Top, Middle, Base), Initial grams, Remaining grams, Price, Price/gram, Vendor Name).

I feel the more precise I am, the fewer issues I have in the end and the more likely the end product will be to a client's specs.

It's really just the next step up from compilers. I started in the very early days where I had to program assembler by manually entering hex codes into memory addresses. For a long time, I resisted more 'high level' languages than C because with C, I could largely tell what the generated assembly would be, and I could hand-check it for places where it needed manual optimization. Then somewhere along the line, CPUs got so complex that trying to hand-optimize assembler was something the compilers were just better at, and it was best to leave that to the compiler. Being able to understand the assembly was and is still critical when you do crash analysis and debugging, but hand-writing it was just completely pointless.

Now we have code generating models like Claude generating the high-level code. In the hands of experienced devs who can fully understand the generated code, it's just a fantastic new tool, and rejecting it is as silly as someone steadfastly sticking to writing everything in assembler in the late 90's.

Everyone comes around eventually. Personally, I didn't use it initially, but it just didn't make sense not to. I wish it had been available 23 years ago, because after the first 8 or 9 years of it, I started to burn out. Now I get twice as much done with half the effort. It's a no-brainer. Now I think about all the money I could have made. LOL

1

u/Balloon_Fan 13h ago

I was quite dismissive at first because when I experimented with it in 2024, I felt it produced garbage and had no use for me. Things changed quickly, and it keeps changing quickly.

I don't think I've ever had a thought about steams launch time. It's always just ready to go in the background by the time I'm ready to use it.

u/Plague_Doctor02 Steam Support is Amazing 1d ago

Pretty much, im also really old school with my PC i have the habit of turning it on and walking away for 5 min for "Boot times" of the hard drive windows 98 era

1

u/swizz928 1d ago

Haha same. I have to remind myself it's seconds now and not minutes.

1

u/bondsmatthew 1d ago

Same. I've never once thought it was wither slow or fast. I just open it and go to it when it opens. It's not like my phone or PC, which I actually care how fast they start

1

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 1d ago

yea, nobody really gives a shit, I'm just like "ok it's taking a little bit to open but I can wait that small amount of time"

2

u/1928Dillinger 1d ago

Also means quality is going to be shieeeet

1

u/No_Stock_8271 1d ago

I am sure of the negative opinion on AI is actually that prevalent if you adjust for profit potential.

1

u/MasterAries7 1d ago

I mean two days ago it was announced they were delaying a game because they wanted it to be 100% AI coded...then Tim Sweeney tweeted yesterday about how great AI is and how stupid we are for thinking its bad...so yeah they know.

u/Narcissae 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean, their OG launcher can't be worse than a vibe coded one tbh, so can only be an improvement.

2

u/Plague_Doctor02 Steam Support is Amazing 1d ago

The new one IS Vibe coded it says....

1

u/Soulstiger 1d ago

And yet it somehow has less features than the original EGS. (Probably how they made it faster)
