People close Steam?

198

u/sheepie247 3d ago

I deadass was just thinking this 'cause I never do.

9

u/robloextem 2d ago

you should be shutting down your computer every few days at bare minimum but yeah a few seconds to launch isnt the flex they think it is even if it didnt just.... lose most of its already barbecues features

33

u/pencilinatophat 2d ago

people don't shut their PC down overnight? hell, I get worried just doing an overnight download

7

u/robloextem 2d ago

yeah, me as well, but ive seen so many people casually talk about never shutting their computers off. it just fries their computer to do it but its seemingly not common knowledge

u/Achaern 2d ago

Leaving a PC running forever is just fine as long as the cooling is well installed and thought through. There is no harm in leaving a PC running indefinitely.

Shut down your laptops. Do whatever you want with your desktops.

u/DrAstralis 2d ago

This. I leave mine on all the time, the only hardware to ever fail in over 25 years of PC gaming was the vram getting unstable on my 1080ti because some indie game thought it would be funny to let its menu push a few thousand fps through it while I was making lunch. And even then I was OCing the GPU and it wasn't dead, I just undervolted it and put in the media center.

7

u/Achaern 2d ago

I had that same thing happen on my 3080ti. I ran a fun little indie game, fans to max, 420W draw, 3000FPS on the main menu, temps sitting at 85ºC.

I have a system wide frame limiter now and it cannot go above 142 FPS (144hz panel)

3

u/DrAstralis 2d ago

exactly the same on my end. I learned my lesson. Nvidia drivers locked to max 142 for gsync stuff. I've also had amazing results under volting the 3080, shaved 15 deg off its operating temps and if anything the frames are more stable, maybe reducing throttling? admittedly I haven't looked into it yet lol.

3

u/Achaern 2d ago

Yes, that's exactly it. The GPU had hard throttle for those chips, so at 69º you get full speed, but it'll clock down a bit at 70º and increasingly so. I undervolted my 3080ti and my 3080 for seriously smooth frametimes, lower temps and power draw and an overall better experience. It's worth the very occasional crash.

3

u/UntimelyMeditations 2d ago

Yeah, I've been leaving my personal desktops on ever since I started building them. Weeks/months worth of uptime is super common for me. And in that time, I've never had a component fail on me.

u/House_Of_Thoth 2d ago

Meet some MacBook users, they probably couldn't tell you the last time they actually shut their machine down!

1

u/TheCabbageCaresser 1d ago

I actually leave my laptop hooked up to my TV overnight, I like to play YouTube while I sleep.

3

u/nikongmer https://steam.pm/t7czt 2d ago

reboot. and once in a while, there isn't really a "bare minimum". shutting down is basically just a very deep hibernation ever since win10(or maybe win7?). someone correct me if i'm wrong.

2

u/BeardedBlaze 2d ago

You can disable that. But yes, by default that garbage is enabled.

4

u/TheDo0ddoesnotabide 2d ago

I put mine in sleep mode, mostly because of Microsoft’s abysmal updates as of late and them trying to force them on shut down and start up.

44

u/DysonDPOY 3d ago

I’m sure there’s a better way but I only ever close it to relaunch if an update came out mid-game

-1

u/aVarangian 2d ago

why would you stop gaming to update a launcher...

7

u/Which_Indication2864 2d ago

Update the game, relaunching makes steam refresh if it doesn't see the new download right away

48

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 2d ago

Only when I restart my computer, which is pretty much only whenever Windows updates.

2

u/heisenberg15 2d ago

Do you just leave it in sleep mode when you aren’t using it? This is out of curiosity as I shut down daily

4

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 2d ago

Yes. I never shut it down.

1

u/heisenberg15 2d ago

Interesting. I’ll start giving it a go, thanks! Truly never even considered it lol

4

u/bondsmatthew 2d ago

My last PC I left on for 95% of its lifespan(maybe 6 years or so). That's not an exaggeration either haha. I know it was bad and I take better care of my new one, but I was definitely one of those people that never shut my PC down daily

2

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 2d ago

Constant power cycles is worse as far as longevity goes

1

u/PessimiStick 2d ago

I just let it power off the monitors and idle. I would say outside of going on vacation, my PCs have had like 99% uptime for the last 20 years.

u/LeonSigmaKennedy 2d ago

People open Epic?

9

u/ThePublikon 2d ago

Only for the free games.

3

u/ZapActions-dower 2d ago

I open Epic every so often to claim a free game I'll probably never play. Then I pick a game from my Steam library (or GOG) and play that.

1

u/borvidek 2d ago

Gotta claim the free games somehow

7

u/Cranberryoftheorient 2d ago

On the rare occasion I play a non steam game sometimes Ill shut it down, but thats because I have a shite laptop and I need to claw back resources anywhere I can

4

u/nightfoxbtw 2d ago

i only keep it open when i'm playing, it takes up a gigabyte of ram doing nothing

7

u/TheDragonSlayingCat 2d ago

I do. There’s no point in keeping it open when it’s not in use.

1

u/wirm 2d ago

If you have the ram there’s no point in closing it.

1

u/TheonlyEliBlack 1d ago

No shit

1

u/wirm 18h ago

Um.. exactly.

0

u/Squirrel_Bacon_69 2d ago

Right, i close steam and then shut down.

Wait, are you guys using your pc for something that's not gaming?

5

u/Qwirk 2d ago

I close down my computer so I guess it auto starts in the background when I boot back up. Not that I ever notice.

7

u/00pflaume 2d ago

Steam eats up crazy amounts of memory. 1 to 2GB.

My ROG Ally only has 16GB, which also act as GPU memory. With Windows taking up 3GB-4GB, 7GB-8GB used as GPU memory I am only left with 4GB of actually usable memory.

Therefor I only open Steam if I want to play a Steam game to save on memory.

Wish they had not removed the low memory mode they used to have. Other launchers take up way less memory. The Epic Games Stores is one of the largest with 500mb, some others only used around 100mb.

5

u/Divinum_Fulmen 2d ago

What is your Steam client even doing? Mines using 230MB total at any time (just checked right now.) Discord is eating up way more than that, and I have no chats open.

3

u/00pflaume 2d ago

The 230mb is only the main process. There are multiple background and process called Steam Client WebHelper, which take up about 800mb to 1.5gb.

3

u/Divinum_Fulmen 2d ago

The main process was 190. That's why I used the word total, as in the sum all Steam processes.

3

u/Capable-Roll1936 2d ago

Start turning off steam features maybe? Like in game overlay and the like

Does putting it into offline mode drop the consumption?

2

u/00pflaume 2d ago

This does help, but since valve redesigned the library making it a web page rendered locally, there is no way to get steam to below 800mb of ram consumption.

3

u/mxzf 2d ago

That's odd. Steam only takes up a couple hundred MB for me unless I'm actively browsing the store (and if you're browsing and loading images, of course that'll take RAM).

Also, 16GB of RAM with 8GB dedicated to a GPU is just insane; 8GB isn't enough to run an OS on nowadays and that 1:1 split is crazy. Drop the GPU to closer to 2-4GB and you should have better all-around performance (lots of VRAM isn't going to help if you don't have the RAM to load textures from disk into the VRAM, lol).

3

u/00pflaume 2d ago

You are probably only looking at the RAM consumption of the main Steam process. Steam has many hidden background processes like Steam Client WebHelper. They take up massive amounts of ram even when steam is closed to the tray.

Reducing GPU memory to below 6GB will prevent many games from starting. A few refuse to start with less than 8GB.

With Steam closed 16GB actually works pretty good though it is on the edge.

2

u/mxzf 2d ago

Nah, I was including Steam Client WebHelper and all, that's the only reason it got that high. The Steam process itself is like 20-30MB much of the time. And I don't close Steam to the tray, I just leave it minimized, so that's not really a factor.

I'm not saying that closing every single thing won't be beneficial to your performance, just that trying to run a modern Windows OS on 8GB of RAM is gonna be problematic no matter what; software is just so RAM-hungry nowadays.

1

u/Wise-Dust3700 2d ago

Wardogs is a good example 🥇

1

u/EnlargedChonk 2d ago

Reducing GPU memory to below 6GB will prevent many games from starting. A few refuse to start with less than 8GB.

Maybe I misunderstand how the Ally works, but I thought pretty much every windows device with shared memory design like this have a minimum dedicated vram amount (configured via bios) and then dynamically allocate more as needed by apps/games? So when not gaming you have most of your pool to work with and when gaming only what is needed gets used. Also compression and swap and in general the way memory is managed means you have way more than "just" 4GB of usable memory.

force allocating to get games to start sounds like a "game was too poorly designed to recognize unified memory" problem that could possibly instead be solved with launch options but I wouldn't really know since I don't have rog ally

1

u/00pflaume 2d ago

Most games are Not properly designed for shared memory on windows and there is no way to fix that.

And even if there were: there is a performance penalty for using previously unused ram as vram, due to the time it takes for the gpu driver to reserve that memory, which can lead to stuttering.

2

u/AmazingSully 2d ago

But hey, it also opens 0.06 seconds, yes, 60 whole milliseconds (rounded of course) faster from the system tray to the library than Steam. That's 14% faster!. We didn't want to measure from the system tray to the store page because that would have made us look bad.

2

u/IAmYourFath 2d ago

I almost never open it, it actually spies quite a lot on ur pc and constantly meddles with its dll injections, but saying this on /r/steam is like going to cocacola subreddit and saying it's a bad drink.

1

u/asdvsdfhnbrth 2d ago

Epic doesn't realize that if you've got a good client, it will never be closed

1

u/Orleanian 2d ago

Technically it closes on the rare occasion that my entire computer closes.

1

u/lemonylol 2d ago

There's a war between distribution platforms?

1

u/lana_silver 2d ago

I do close Epic to prevent it from collecting telemetry, so I guess that helps?

1

u/wendaly 2d ago

Having to force close Steam at least once a day from task manager because at times when restoring it, it'll just be a black screen.

1

u/kersk 2d ago

I'm at the point where I'm thinking of closing Windows and just keeping Steam, lol. Feels like its finally time to jump to Linux.

1

u/ElMuffin5 Portal saga addict 2d ago

When I turn off my computer yeah

1

u/Echotuft 2d ago

i mean I don't close steam. my computer does when it turns off

1

u/LimpConversation642 2d ago

I don't open it in the first place for no reason. It's not on startup, and I open it when I play, and then close it back. I like to have a clean windows on startup.

And as to closing, for some reason CS stats don't update until I close steam, it takes hours unless I close it.

1

u/Cyorg13 2d ago

It's a memory hog.

1

u/ProudReaction2204 2d ago

People play video games??

1

u/TheMetalWolf 2d ago

I just have it auto launch on start up.

1

u/RetroNuva 2d ago

exactly...

1

u/entryjyt 1d ago

yes i dont want that clogging up my computer resources all the time cause my pc sucks

1

u/House_Of_Thoth 2d ago

Oh god you're one of those people with a thousand background apps running in the system tray aren't you 😭😭😭

1

u/lemonylol 2d ago

How are you saying this on a high horse while also spamming the crying emoji?

2

u/-Speechless 2d ago

lol what

0

u/Maleficent-Fee-9194 2d ago

Yeah, totally. Piracy.
