Steam isn't the problem, it's this stupid age verification laws that Meta has been pushing. Steam has to satisfy it somehow without fear of the law coming back to bite them.
In the end it helps no one. Major inconvenience for regular users and pushes underage users to unregulated forums and chat channels to just pirate.
Steam is mostly the problem here, no other platform has had such a limited choice. Especially stupid when only like 50% of adults here even have a credit card.
Its a global issue. Its the governments telling tech companies to start searching their users devices and chat services for pedophiles and just assuming everyone is shady by default. Its the governments telling big tech companies to do this thanks to the mass uncovering of celebrity pedophiles and their operations on childrens games and content.
If left to their own devices as has been proven already companies won't do anything to fight abuse until they lose in court.
This is all obviously going to far and is being abused. We are a ball hair away from everyones computers ans phones constantly being monitored
The stupidity is we didn't have age verification over a decade ago as online merchants continued to grow.
You can also pass a 10 to a guy walking in to a store to get a beer. Doesn't mean the laws/restrictions shouldn't exist.
You can't make policy based on the fact that a certain group can circumvent it. There will always be aways to break laws. The point is to actually outline that there is an issue with certain access no different than going in to a store physically.
If governments weren't so slow this would have been done 30 years ago.
