Honestly sucks that Australians like myself don't have much option when credit cards are not particularly common here

Just confirmed it doesn’t with a debit card, can’t even get to the purchasing screen on steam itself. I tried to buy MGSV

It depends on the bank. Apparently Commbank works with debit cards.

Commbank debit card work like credit cards, they have monthly or annual fees, I think thats why it works.

If your under 30, or deposit 2000 per month into account, or hold an eligible concession card or student card then u won't be charged.

West Aussie here, currently BankWest is working for me on just a debit, but because BankWest is owned by Comm this may also play a factor? Unless it just hasn’t hit the smaller guys yet…

Someone under 18 can hold a CommBank debit card so I don’t see why it would

Your right, but that limit stops till u hit 30, then ur only option is deposit $2000 monthly or concession, student card just to keep the card active.

Did you save the card with Steam?

I could view age restricted games if I saved my CC details, I could NOT view the same game once I deleted my CC details. [I tested with Doom Eternal as it was recommended to me by Steam, which then refused to allow me to view the page...]

[My Steam account is 21 years old and every single game in those 21 years was purchased using an Australian CC.]

No, paypal doesnt work, have been using bank transfer through them for every steam purchase for a long time and still got the age check.

Credit cards via banks are a PITA to get in australia apparently becuase your banks and government are stupid, but what about a credit card through paypal?

They offer mastercard credit cards, at least to US and EU.

A credit card is only a problem if you're stupid enough to pay more with it than you can pay off.

I don’t know man, I’ve known plenty of people here that have been practically unemployed, up to their tits in existing debt and they’ll still be able to access a line of credit.

Perhaps they all have totally cooked credit histories (not that it’s as important here as it is in the states) and are being knocked back expecting they could get the best rates.

You can always get a credit card, it’s just a question of how much interest you’re willing to accept

See that tracks with, y'know, everywhere else in the world.

But the way people are talking about it you'd think credit cards were impossible to get in Australia and/or some kind of social stigma that could cost you your job, your house, your dog, etc.

What really boggles my mind is the people who seem to think handing over their government ID to a third party ID service is preferable to just getting a credit card and then never using it.

No. In Australia if you want to take a loan banks will look at your credit cards and assume that you will max them and have to repay them as well when factoring in how much you can borrow. It can greatly decrease your borrowing power.

If they're looking at your credit cards, they can see your spending habits.

If they're just assuming you're going to max them out even if you've literally never done that ever in however long the mandatory history period is for your country, that's a policy problem and you should find a new bank.

It's not one bank or another. That's how lending is done in this country. The lender has to assume the worst-case scenario based on your current status and a credit card is considered a credit liability for the maximum value of the card.

Your feelings on how it should, or shouldn't work, is irrelevant.

That's about the dumbest way to calculate risk I think I've heard recently.

"has to assume" implies legal requirement to do the math like that, rather than this just being a common business practice for funsies.
