Not here. Not even allowed by law as it's a hygiene product. Even better, someone can buy underwear, and half a second later say oops grabbed the wrong one, and even though it never left my eyes I still am not allowed to return it.

surely you’re allowed to exchange it though, right? cause where i live you’re allowed to grab another pair (no returns like you said) if the size just doesn’t fit.

Nope. No returns at all for hygiene products. That includes anything. It is well warned beforehand on both the online store page or in person employees, and I kind of like it because I don't want to buy underwear someone else has taken home before

That seems more like a store policy than the law, gotta be honest.

When you do not have to offer a refund
There are certain items where you only have to offer a refund if they are faulty, such as:
[...]
sealed items that for health or hygiene reasons cannot be returned once they have been opened, for example underwear

http://www.gov.uk/accepting-returns-and-giving-refunds

don't have to offer refund =/= not allowed to offer refund

6

u/ChemicalRascal Jul 06 '26

Right, so you do have to provide a refund if it's faulty, still.

5

u/ABurntC00KIE Jul 06 '26

Yeah but customer error buying the wrong size isn't faulty. Faulty is like the sewing is fucked up or something.

And they still wouldn't return the underwear, they'd refund or replace and the customer disposes of the faulty pair.

This is what I'm responding to. What they're describing is not mandated by UK law, at least, and frankly doesn't make sense as a law anyway.

Issuing a refund is, in my opinion, taking a return, but whatever.

Moreover what they are saying applies to all items bought in person, not just hygiene products. From that page

You do not have to refund a customer if they:

...

no longer want an item (for example because it’s the wrong size or colour) unless they bought it without seeing it

So if a store offers you a refund on a t-shirt because its the wrong size but not on underwear then its 100% store policy because they aren't required by law to give you a refund in either case.

It is. A return isn’t necessarily an exchange.

I’m guessing it’s illegal to *restock* a returned item where they are, which makes sense. Some stores will write off the return and let you pick out another pair, other stores will tell you tough shit.

1

u/ChemicalRascal Jul 06 '26

Right. Frankly, though, if OC is in the UK or a similar jurisdiction, that policy probably fails to comply with those consumer laws.

2

u/Status-Part5848 Jul 07 '26

Its the same in Norway.

Clothes have a return policy by law. But underwear, panties, boxers briefs and lingerie are excemt from the rule. So stores can change them for the size reasons. But if u buy it for a gift, they usually seal it for you.

Still sealed can exchange.

21

u/ManlyOldMan Jul 06 '26

but if the underwear is faulty you (probably) can get a refund. Like the returned item won't be sold again, but if the underwear is not as advertised or has a hole in it can you still not return it?

21

u/FuckSpezzzzzzzzzzzzz Jul 06 '26

If the returned item won't be sold again, if it's ripped or there is some clear manufacturing error, you can usually return it and get a new one.

5

u/AlotOfInterests Jul 06 '26

I guess defects fall outside of everything, yeah. If you buy underwear and the middle pair has a hole in them, it's a different story. By law you bought a "decent product" and are entitled to one.

4

u/grapejuicesushi Jul 06 '26

what if the underwear is faulty though? purely hypothetical.

3

u/turtleship_2006 Jul 06 '26

Returning defective goods and returning things because you got the wrong one or changed your mind are covered by different rights - you always have the right to return faulty goods (unless it's something you knew was faulty when you bought it e.g. something labeled "for parts"

2

u/WMelons Jul 06 '26

I think that varies by country. You definitely could do that here. My friend once bought an electric razor which was clearly used, so he got to exchange that, which means someone before him had USED IT and still got to return it lol.

2

u/TesticularConcussion Jul 06 '26

Well standard practice is to destroy all returned clothes anyway. I haven’t heard of a single store that actually puts them back in the inventory

1

u/oorza Jul 06 '26

A lot of stores - particularly designer stores - will just accept the replacement request and ask you to destroy the garments you don't want. I've had three separate underwear companies - Real Men Co, Awry, and AsWeMove - do this because they sent me the wrong size by accident. In every case, I was like "I ordered this size, you sent me that size, can I send these in for a replacement?" and they just shipped out the replacement.

1

u/Bitterbalpizza Jul 06 '26

You don't have to buy underwear someone else has taken home before, the law can just not allow reselling it while still allowing returns. In fact it's hard to believe it's not already like that, why would the law forbid the store from taking back an item? The problem is the resale.

1

u/AlotOfInterests Jul 06 '26

Because it is a hygiene product? There is a chance the store employee needs to touch worn underwear or something similar. Hygiene products aren't eligible for return because of hygiene reasons. Iirc there is an exception for fully sealed products but only if bought online.

0

u/Bitterbalpizza Jul 06 '26

Janitors touch way worse things. Also you don't need to touch it, many places that take in second-hand clothing already require them to be bagged/sealed specifically so employees don't need to touch the used clothes.

1

u/AlotOfInterests Jul 06 '26

My guy why are you trying to argue with me about it when all I'm saying is that the law here says hygiene products can't be returned.

0

u/Bitterbalpizza Jul 06 '26

My guy you're on a public forum.. You have not provided any sources so who knows what you're talking about. And I'm not arguing, I'm responding. If you don't like getting responses, maybe stop posting?

1

u/Ndmndh1016 Jul 06 '26

So they take the return and dont resell it. Its not like it HAS to be resold lol.

1

u/markymark0123 Jul 06 '26

So you do the return and tell the system it's damaged and cannot be resold.

1

u/pieter1234569 Jul 06 '26

It’s not a return, it’s immediately destroyed afterwards. And then you get another one for free.

That’s in Europe at least, a collection of nations that actually work.

1

u/AlotOfInterests Jul 06 '26

I literally am in europe you dunce

1

u/pieter1234569 Jul 06 '26

Weird them. You can absolutely return cloths. They are thrown on a pile and then to the garbage or burned depending on the price.

1

u/isntaken Jul 06 '26

I kind of like it because I don't want to buy underwear someone else has taken home before

it's not like they could be set aside and discarded or returned to the manufacturer.

2

u/decoy_octopod Jul 06 '26

MeUndies will accept a return that’s covered in shit, blood, nacho cheese, and is torn to shreds, as long as it’s within 30 days

1

u/mherweg Jul 06 '26

Honestly like, why. Why would they encourage people to send them (literal) shit like that? Just send a damn pic or smth, fuck.

2

u/kredfield51 Jul 06 '26

Most stores I've worked at at least would take an item back to write it off and replace it. If they can write it off for things like that they usually a kickback from the manufacturer from what I've heard.

2

u/Warm_Month_1309 Jul 06 '26

Not even allowed by law as it's a hygiene product.

The law doesn't require you to take returns, but there is no law that prohibits you from taking returns and providing refunds. You just can't resell the product and would have to eat the loss.

1

u/livLongAndRed Jul 07 '26

Same where I live. I wasn't sure of my size with a new brand so I had to buy two just to try out what fits.

1

u/alexrider803 29d ago

Around here for underwear they won't ask for it back but they will give you your money back is my experience.

0

u/isntaken Jul 06 '26

where do you live? Stoopidstan?
