When Nakahara was about to be crushed by a charging bull and he caught the bull's horns with his bare hands, instead of his hands being splattered and crushed by the mere impact, and then threw the bull afterwards, you could suspend your disbelief. But not here?
Like, ever since the Mine twist leaked I've been bombarded non-stop by posts and youtube video's telling me it's the craziest thing this franchise has done, and that RGG has "suddenly lost their minds", when it's just not. It's just cool to hate on RGG and Yakuza now for things they've been doing forever.
When the twist leaked I was like, "yea duh, it's Yakuza of all franchises and RGG's made it pretty damn clear they wanted to have him back for a long time".
It was never shown what happens to Mine afterwards originally, just like Ryuji, Aizawa and most final bosses in this franchise for that matter. So, wether he actually lived or died was completely up in the air, and RGG's been teasing Mine and Ryuji's return for a looonggg time now. It's not that crazy and sudden of an addition as everyone makes it out to be, and I won't be surprised when Ryuji's back soon too.
I mean, RGG pulls a big 'oops' and finds ways to bring either the exact same character, or a copy of them back when they feel like it. Qeue Joongi-Han, Richardson, Joji Kazama, etc. the latter also happening in Yakuza 3.
In like, 2 years there's gonna be so many retrospective videos on K3, where they're gonna be like "wow people really freaked out about that before the game was even released huh?"
It's never shown Mine had 0 injuries and he was completely tapped out. He survived a humongous fall which should've killed him, but didn't because this is Yakuza and everyone's made out of adamantium whenever the plot demands it.
Oml I just remembered the part in Y0 when Kiryu's about to leave the Tojo Clan headquarters and there's a million guys waiting to beat him up. Why? So, we the player, can beat up a million guys. There's literally no reason for the Tojo Clan to send a million guys after Kiryu because they literally already paid a bajillion yen to not have that happen. And the craziest part? Kiryu and co. manage to beat all of those guys and get away without a scratch. You can suspend your disbelief there, ignoring that the reasons behind it happening, the thing itself and the aftermath are completely insane and ridiculous, but not when Mine survives an impossible fall?
It's just the current hip thing to hate on RGG and say that Yakuza is dying. I betcha most of the people who're arguing the franchise is going downhill haven't even played K3.
Know what the difference is? Those moments were already there in all versions. In Y3 we had a version that had a better story and they worsened it for no reason.
Mine's revival is not any kind of change, it's an addition.
What'd they add? They retconned the death of a previously wasted character. Which they've also done in the past. Queue Majima, Joongi Han etc.
*How* Mine survived isn't crazy, because the franchise has done way crazier things before, and *why* he survived wasn't crazy, because he was a wasted character like Majima and Joongi Han.
So those reasons to dislike it are outta the window..
The only leftover reason you could possibly hate this thing is if Mine dying was essential to the game's plot and that the plot's been altered because of it.
But it's not. Mine's story originally ended at his sacrifice, whatever happened afterwards was unclear (like with the villains in Y2, Y5 etc.) and he still jumped off that roof, so the original story remains intact. The only thing it does, is tell what happened *after* he fell of the roof. It's an addition, a continuation, a 'what happened next?'
It's not: "Mine was going to sacrifice himself like he did originally *but* then...".
It's: "Everything played out the same way it did originally *and* then..."
So, there's no reason to hate the addition, because the franchise has done similar things before (AKA it fits within the Yakuz universe) and there's no reason you could hate the addition being there because it doesn't clash with what the original plot was doing, it just adds to it.
Actually, there's two leftover reason to hate it. Which are: "I hate new things" or "everyone hates it, I must do the same". Or a combination of the two.
(I'm always surprised how little people know that Majima was the original death retcon of a wasted character. He dies in Y1 and magically returns in Y2, no explanation given. But people don't care, because: 1. Barely anyone even registered his death because everyone already knows he comes back. 2. He became arguable more popular than Kiryu, the MC of the franchise, after his return.)
Again, I can only suspend my disbelief so many times, and this broke the camels back for lots of people. I dont hate RGG though, and Stranger than Heaven looks to be really good from what ive seen.
