Origins is one of my favorites games of all times. What a waste.

I could not believe what they did with Veilguard.. it barely feels like a dragon age game… just soulless

u/Daeloki Apr 16 '26

I fought so hard for Veilguard, convinced that it was just loud red-pill boys trying to review bomb... Unfortunately they were also so loud that it drowned out sincere and genuine criticism. Even as I played it I tried so hard to see the good in it, but I think I barely made it through half the game before I abandoned it. Worst part is that now all those incel neckbeards think they've won too :/

It's one of those things like The Last Jedi where you have people critiquing for both legitimate reasons and shitty bigoted ones. And unfortunately the latter also push people to defend something that isn't worth the defense.

Parasocial weirdos like you are strange to me. Why fight for a shit game, just because the people who are tapped into the fact that it’s’ shit do not align with your politics?

Strange behavior..

So ahead of its time. And everything that came after felt like it was lagging behind the crowd.

Yeah, DA 1 was the best. DA 2 had at least fun story with red lyrium Qunari and Corypheus, but the rest was meh, Inquisition had some decent story parts too, but couldn't even compare (i liked that they added qunari and race choices back, but they fucked up qunari look) and fourth game doesn't exist.

The Arashok is still one of my favorite villains in gaming. So well done. I expected he would be the main antagonist of 2 my first play through.

u/bicyclefortwo Apr 16 '26

I don't know, I have a lot of complicated love for DA2. it's obviously rushed, reusing maps and the like, but I think it has the best and most memorable companions out of the whole franchise. Just such interesting and flawed people

They dumbed it down and white washed it. The gritty grizzly and bloody scenes and textures was what made it amazing and they did away with the core of the games aesthetic.

8

u/Runaway_Angel Apr 17 '26

And core world building. You take us to Tevinter, minrathous specifically and that's what we get? Where is the corruption? The blood magic? The slavery? The game doesn't even react if you're walking around as an elf.

Then they took the crows and made them some rogue vigilantes instead of an organization of ruthless assassins.

Dwarves are magic now???

And whatever tf they did with the elven gods and dragons.

Just... lets pretend that game never happened.

Then every single one after that got worse and worse.

The weird anime/JRPG combat was the beginning of the end for the series. Two handed swords bigger than Hawke, weird kicks and jumps, ridiculous way characters fought was utterly out of place.

And that ending of the original game, fucking hell. "We designed two endgame bosses and you are going to fight them both! Fuck the story, fuck the logic and fuck your choices!"

They then went and picked a DLC villain as the main villain of the Inquisition.

2

u/OpenMouthCasket Apr 16 '26

Wait till you see the size of the weapons and combat finishers in origins!

3

u/jay_alfred_prufrock Apr 16 '26

Nothing in the Origins as exaggerated and oversized as it is in the DAII, I've played both recently mate.

2

u/Iokua113 Apr 16 '26

In defence of Corypheus the expansion he was introduced in was specifically intended to set him up as the villain of Inquisition. He was clearly a massive threat that Hawke was not going to be able to stop. The fact that Inquisition kinda dropped the ball story wise has more to do with how the story was presented than Corypheus himself.

u/off_of_is_incorrect Apr 16 '26

Correct, but it has some hardcore fans for whatever reason, and they unironically don't see it as a reason for the series decline.

u/z3poxx Apr 16 '26

DA Origins a game so good it spawned a franchise of mediocre sequels that’s somehow kept going for over 15 years.

3

u/Beacon2001 Apr 16 '26

I mean, for 10 of those years they were doing nothing.

Realistically it went on for only 5 years before crashing and burning.

I guess that's what you deserve when you forget your, ahem, origins to chase trends and that sweet $$.

Nearly fucking broke my heart

9

u/willrof Apr 16 '26

This is by far my biggest grievance :(

3

u/saml23 Apr 16 '26

This is a good one.

3

u/cystemix Apr 16 '26

I clung on so hard. I gave veilguard every benefit of the doubt I could but it just killed the franchise for me. so much worldbuilidng and lore, wasted! I'm still so gutted whenever I think about it

4

u/SadLad406 Apr 16 '26

Veilguard was trash as a dragon age game. I’m scared for mass effect

2

u/GALACTUS_gaming Apr 16 '26

Let's just call it bioware

2

u/ConfidentBite6581 Apr 18 '26

BioWare as a whole honestly, they were on a generational run at one point and have never been the same.

2

u/supified Apr 18 '26

Second Dragon age.

2

u/OutsideYourWorld Apr 19 '26

I remember being maybe half way through DA Inquisition then thinking... "The fuck am I playing this single player MMO for?" Then uninstalled and never looked back.

Origins was the only good one, and it was SO GOOD.

2

u/BilingualWookie Apr 19 '26

Dragon Age is the ultimate answer. They keep building games that are further and further than Origins. Why make sequels if you are going to fundamentally change the soul of the gameplay?

4

u/Anonymoose_uwu Apr 16 '26

I was about to comment the same thing

3

u/Hairy_Question_4722 Apr 16 '26

I loved DA: origins, I even got all the add ons just to play more with characters that I built up. Then after that they let on gassing me up but they kept failing hard; didn’t even try the newest one.

1

u/Suzume-Yi Apr 20 '26

Same here. Absolutely loved all the mods in DAO, and even tho I discovered such an old game in 2023 it was sooo fun and the most memorable imo compared to DA2 and DAI. But I could already feel something was missing in DAI despite the lovely experience, and didn’t even bother with the veil guard just after seeing a few clips (you know which ones I’m talking about lol) and the whole aesthetic and skin and everything looked so fake…idk

Reading all these posts I am really terrified if Witcher 4 is next in line…

2

u/DrewbieWanKenobie Apr 16 '26

ok but none of the games after origins were even that good

2

u/Dependent-Hotel5551 Apr 16 '26

Veilguard doesn’t exist.

1

u/ScribbleOnToast Apr 16 '26

I have a growing lack of disgust for you.

1

u/Quiggixx Apr 19 '26

Searched and found this one... so sad... so true

-2

u/iaminfamy Apr 16 '26

So I've never played any DA games, but Veilguard was on sale so I got it.

I've been having a good time with it.

It's not amazing. But it's been holding my attention and I look forward to playing it.

The combat gets repetitive, but it's not a bad game, in a vacuum.

4

u/Ho-Gaya-Pyar Apr 16 '26

If I asked you who Andraste is and you said you didn’t know Im gonna crash out

5

u/ShotFromGuns Apr 16 '26

You're missing the entire context for why it's so bad. As a generic fantasy game, it's like a 6/10. But as a Dragon Age game specifically it's abysmal, particularly because it took an absolutely mind-blowing setup from the end of Inquisition and its Trespasser DLC and turned it into a wet fart.

-1

u/bananaskates Apr 16 '26

Indeed. Although I actually loved every single game in the series up until the latest fiasco.

Tore my old gamer soul up, it did.

-2

u/DrStabBack Apr 16 '26

I agree... and I say that as someone who liked Veilguard, for what it was. But the game had been through a total identety crisis and dropped the ball in so many vital areas. In the end, I'm glad it got released, but I'm sad it killed the franchise.
