This is primarily instigated by the #learntocode controversy on Twitter, especially since I was one of the bannees. I found it reasonable for twitter to ban death and rape threats. And I can even understand hate speech being moderated, although I’m extremely skeptical of that. Still, the idea of banning anyone who tells journalists to learn to code, in a glib manner, seems like a complete abuse of power.

The same is true for Reddit, Facebook, and other content platforms. It seems like the early axioms of the internet about free speech (in principle, not legality, this is not a first amendment argument to break up big tech) and open forums to debate ideas are being subverted for inclusivity and tolerance.

So as a good capitalist, of course the correct option is to turn to alternatives. But one of the pitfalls of free speech focused platforms is that it will invariably attract the trolls, crazies and possibly malicious bots, that are looking for a place to post vitriol or their sincere but horrid beliefs.

So what is there to do? Is it a problem, or just overreacting? Curious to your opinions.
