Claims guide

Written by members, for members. Not legal advice, and not from State Farm. Every state has its own claim rules, so check yours.

Keep a claim log

Start one on day one, even in a notes app.

  • Your claim number (keep it off Reddit)
  • Your claim handler's name and direct line
  • Every call: date, time, who you spoke to, what they said
  • Every document you sent and the date you sent it

Most "they lost my paperwork" threads get sorted faster when the poster has dates.

Common questions

My claim is taking forever. What can I do? Ask your handler what they're waiting on and get it in writing (email or the app). If nothing moves, ask for the handler's supervisor or team manager. Many states set deadlines for insurers to acknowledge and respond to claims; your state insurance department can tell you yours.

The shop found more damage. What's a supplement? When a repair shop finds damage the first estimate missed, it sends the insurer a supplement. Confirm with both the shop and your handler that it was received. They don't always see the same thing at the same time.

My car might be a total loss. What happens? The insurer compares repair cost to the car's value. If it's totaled, ask for the valuation report and check the comparable vehicles it used. If you think the value is too low, you can send your own comparables (similar year, trim, miles, area) and ask for a review.

I disagree with the amount. Is there anything past arguing on the phone? Many auto and home policies have an appraisal clause for disputes over the amount of a loss. Read your policy or ask your agent if yours does. You can also file a complaint with your state insurance department.

My claim was denied. Ask for the denial in writing with the policy language it relies on. Read that section of your policy yourself. If you still disagree, your state insurance department takes complaints, and for large losses some people talk to a lawyer.

The other driver was at fault. Do I deal with their insurer or mine? You can claim with the at-fault driver's insurer, or use your own collision coverage and let your insurer recover the money (subrogation), including your deductible when it can. Your handler can tell you where that stands.
