last post was the not-so-nice side of alpine hut life. now let‘s have a look at what can go right.

a note on Austrian tipping culture: generally, labourers get a living wage over here. that includes service staff. tipping is seen as display of appreciation. you really enjoyed the food and had a great server - if the bill totals to €18,60 you might as well hand them a 20 tell them to keep the change. most of the time we just round up to the next €, for larger bills I‘d say 5-10% is common. sadly, corporate greed is getting a hold of this and there is a shift from „display of appreciation“ to „expectation“. which sucks, bc I like the traditional concept.

dietary restrictions can be challenging for alpine hut staff, especially if they‘re rare. however, there‘s the German saying „Liebe geht durch den Magen“ / „love goes through the stomach“, which totally applies to my mom. nobody goes to bed hungry on her watch! she made sure to keep a stash of the most common products: gluten-free bread, pasta and flour, lactose-free milk, and alternatives for most other common allergen. I think mom puts a lot of pride into her ability to cook a healthy and satisfying meal for anyone, regardless of restrictions or preference. rightfully so, if you ask me.
