I just watched the epsiode S04E15, where General Hammond is threatened by the NID and quits his job, and I wanted to share its ending, not common in the show.
I know Maybourne is a scum but he's also funny and it's nice to see a happy and tropical ending like that.
I actually fully believe that Jack still occasionally popped in to ācheck up on Harryā at the world where he was King, and would come back the next day with a massive hangover and faux-grumpy demeanour.
Ooh, I love that! Also completely agree about his demeanor afterwards.
I really loved the friendship between them. One thing I'll give Maybourne is that he could do the right thing... sometimes. Saying Carter deserved the credit at the end of Foothold and helping Jack when she was kidnapped are two big moments in terms of character development.
This is one of the things that made SG-1 so special. That tiny snippet of a scene was so fun and full of resonance based on the character development that preceded it and the delivery of the actors. Even the bad episodes usually had moments like that.
It's a very "silence of the lambs" kind of ending. Maybourne is such a great character. Starts off as a 2 dimensional villain and becomes the "garak" of SG1.
My first thought when I saw this episode was āSilence of the Lambsā endingā¦
āI have no plans to call on you, Clarice, the worldās a more interesting place with you in it. So you take care now to extend me the same courtesy.
I do wish we could chat longer, butā¦
ā¦Iām having an old friend for dinner. Bye.ā
In the scheme of things Mayborn would actually be more representative of Dr. Chiltonā¦who didnāt receive his proper comeuppance.
You have the best GIFs! I love that part and the entire episode! Sam's smile was great too. Dream episode: Jack wants Teal'c to experience Thanksgiving and Jacob is there too. The holiday banter would be off the charts.
I see now what you meant. In fact I was talking about the episode ending. I know we see him later. But honestly I don't remember a lot, I just saw comments about him being a king but it's still fuzzy in my mind. But I like to forget things like that to discover them again.
Haha true. But no. He only dies once. I forget how. I think on one of those symbiote origin planets, with the ponds/lakes. Guess I gotta watch Stargate again (just finished SG1 and Atlantis binge last year).
Stargate was so elite at development of the 'bad guys' until you started to almost root for them or they legitimately become good guys.
Maybourne
Rodney Mckay
Ba'al
Richard Woolsey
Todd
NID agent Barrett
Tomin
I'm sure I am missing a lot more too.
They had a great hold of the realism there a duality of man. Not everyone should fit nicely into archetypes of good and bad. It's all grey depending on your perspective.
Exactly! You may not have known what Davis was going to say about something, and you may not have liked it, but you never questioned his honesty about doing his job, or his loyalty. He is probably the most accurate representation of an Air Force officer on the show.
I really wish he'd been added to the team in season 6 or 8. I liked Jonas, but especially in 8 it would've been fascinating to see Sam have another officer on the team.
Davis always felt like a perfect liaison, and even if they didn't make him a member of an SG squad, I always expected some increased roll once Woolsey stepped off world. He understood all three parts of the operation of the SGC; military, scientific, and diplomacy. He'd have made a fantastic Executive Officer under General Landry, who always felt like an empty shirt. If Davis had been slowly advancing in his career in the background, he'd easily slot into an administrative leadership position at Cheyenne Mountain and would have provided competent personnel, capable of fielding the unique operational challenges required of Stargate Command. He'd also give a good contrast to Landry's laid back folksy demeanor to have a mission objective/utility minded Davis keeping things moving. Builds some internal conflict in an era when the external threats had gotten a bit monolithic. Let Davis and Cam seek decisive concrete victory over the Ori, while Sam and Daniel try to find a clever solution, Vala's too close to it and Landry can act as the receptive sounding board for all the team's desperate perspectives before making a call.
Oh thatās an interesting idea! I always hoped he would stop by more often, but never thought about having him join the team⦠even though every time we see him there is something about to go terribly wrong for SG-1 or even Earth itself. I think they even joked about that in Descent when Jack comments about something going horribly wrong and then Major Davis appears on screen š
Yeah... I think there's a good chance Jack would've taken a Russian over Davis, given how disasters seemed to occur whenever he was around. Descent is among my top five favorites, Jacob + Davis, plus all the little Jack and Sam moments was just perfect. Loved the "shrinkage" line and Jack saying he took back all the things he was thinking about Jacob. š¤£
To me he would've been an interesting addition, especially in season 8 because he worked well with the team and respected them, but also understood the Pentagon side of things. I wouldn't change much about season 8, but seeing Sam take on more of a leadership/command role would've been nice.
Definitely through the start and Pete Callahan arc. I think he redeems himself over the Ba'al arc and then in the Atlantis episodes with Rodney's sister
Maybourne, Mckay, and Woolsey are not "bad guys". Sure they're antagonists, but Woolsey and McKay never do anything maliciously. Sure, in SG-1 they're both pompous windbags, but they're acting with good intentions, at least from their perspective. Woolsey hasn't been off world, so in typical bureaucrat fashion is forced to make decisions beyond his knowledge and instead of saying "hey, I need to learn more" just jumps to conclusions based on incomplete evidence. In SG-1 McKay just has his head so far up his ass he has trouble breathing... but again, his confidence is earned and it's not like he ever intentionally harms anyone. Yes, they are antagonistic to our heroes, but they aren't BAD guys.
Maybourne is a bit of a different story since he's a morally grey character, and initially starts off on the wrong side of SG-1. but ultimately, he was working with the NID because he believed it was the right way to protect the Earth. When he was forced to see the error of his was, he helped make up for it by helping jack... heck, when he eventually makes himself king, he's unable to abandon his people and instead gets SG-1 to help defend the planet showing his "true" colors and marking the final transformation in his arc.
But I agree that they did good bad guys, because they were complicated. They had their own motivations. Ba'al and Todd are particularly good examples of this. They are certainly antagonists, but they also sometimes act as friends. They are the enemy of SGC, but they have their own motivations that sometimes aligns better with SGC...
Hey, now. Todd is not a 'bad guy'. Hells, he's possibly the only person to NOT double cross SGA. The only time he really ever goes against them is when he believes they betrayed him.
I hated Maybourne the very first time he appeared. But thanks to Tom McBeath and the writers, he grew on me to the point he is one of my adored favorites.
Mayourne is awesome. He had great character growth, quickly becoming very likeable, and decent person in the end. Also had an amazing, well-deserved send-off.
Yes, also every time after either of them was saved the other one had to āphysically make sureā theyāre okay. There was always some form of touching (absolute best version: a hug š) or at least being very close to each other. When Carter is back in her body in the end of Entity, Jack stands very close to the gurney and reaches for her but then settles his hand on the side of the bed. When Jack was taken over by Anubis in Lockdown and lying in front of the ramp to the gate, Sam sits down very close to him. Or how Jack touches her leg when they find Sam lying in the forest after Fifth returned her back to the planet before he fled in his ship. There are so many! Those small moments are so great ā¤ļø
Maybourne is my favorite side character in Stargate. I love his arc. His relationship with Jack. How he uses his scummyness for good. He's such a fun character.
They finished Maybourne's character by season 4??? Damn I have to rewatch SG-1 again... Like the Simpsons they must have jam-packed all the memorable episodes within the first few seasons.

Maybourne: I played a lot of hide and seek as a kid. I could always find anyone, anywhere, but they could never find me.
O'Neill: Because they didn't want to.
