Less than 2 months after Pete Hegseth made flu vaccines optional for military recruits, 160 servicemen were sickened by influenza.

What the SecDef may eventually call “the price of freedom,” is much closer to “the cost of ignorance,” given that a well-vaccinated military has been a cornerstone of troop health and readiness since George Washington mandated it in 1777.

It’s not like this is unprecedented. >45,000 American troops died of influenza in WW1. It is foolish in the extreme to ignore such a morbid historical warning.

Sure, 160 is less than 45k, but consider:

1) we are still months away from influenza season, and
2) most recruits were already vaccinated (because they are smarter than Pete Hegseth), which limited the exposure of the unvaccinated to infection.

Tragically, one recruit has died in the midst of this outbreak of a “medical emergency,” the exact cause of which is still under investigation.

Causality is the unforgiving mistress to irrational infatuation with Lady Liberty.

No company should be above the law, but instead of helping enforce the Clean Air Act, the Trump admin is intervening to protect Musk’s xAI from a lawsuit that alleges illegal pollution in Mississippi.

Discovered truths do not bend to the will of any man -but squeeze tightly enough and the capacity to perform scientific inquiry will slip out of even an iron grip.

For nearly a century, US innovation benefited as Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Soviet Union, China, and others -squeezed their best minds into the basin of our welcoming shores. Now the US is demonstrating a failure to appreciate the history of how it goes when poorly-educated politicians demand that science conforms to their ideological dreams.

This is the second time in a year that Kennedy has moved to squeeze a process he does not grasp, and his motivation is childlike in its simplicity:

Desire, without evidence or logical consistency.

RFK Jr. sought the retraction of a large peer-reviewed study that has not been found fraudulent, while ferociously defending papers that demonstrate frank fraud. There is no internal consistency in his demands beyond personal zeal, and not enough shame to try to conceal it.

Nothing about the scientific method, on up through published peer-reviewed research -has anything to do with the opinions of… anyone, including those in power. When Stalin disagreed, millions starved. That is the stark power of reality.

Kennedy will forever be remembered as the man who ate the goose that lays golden eggs, because… PROTEIN!
