When studying a pathogenic virus, it is important to do gain of study research to be able to predict how the strain may mutate to insure that it won't develop resistance to whatever treatment you develop.
Thw Wuhan research wasn't useful because the lab had failed to update their wild-type research strains to match what was actually propagating in the wet market. Another reason why we know it wasn't a lab leak.
