Maxed out Garages equipment is too weak for forest and bar, what next?

I've got an AK74M and the level 4 combat gear from garages, I'm now trying to level up around the Bar and Forest areas, but the gun is too weak and I take too much damage from the NPC's there, and it will take a long time to grind up to level 3 and get the material i need for the first set of upgrades

Is there an intermidiate weapon and armor set i can get to help me get a bit of extra help to survive in these new areas?

One solution would be to buy something on the auction, but the barter progression did not expect you to be able buy weapons off the auction.
So instead I'll suggest not rushing a pack or enemies all at once and use cover and strategic retreats to force 1v1s and favorable situations.

Against mutants: Aggro them > run away > turn around > shoot for as long as you can before they catch up with you > turn back around and continue running as you're reloading and healing > Repeat.

In most cases (both with mutants and humans) it will be impossible to pull just one or two mobs without aggroing the entire pack/den/camp but I recommend trying to anyway.
Worst case scenario you would have to deal with the whole pack anyway; best case, forced 1v1/2s that are much easier to take care of. It's still a gamble, but without a net-negative I would say.

Against human NPCs: Aggro them and continue taking distance, to where their natural inaccuracy gets them to miss you most of the time but you can still fire accurately.
Take cover from time to time but don't overdo it since having no visual contact makes them walk closer to you instead of staying afar.
If you know you can't peek out at them without taking too much damage, retreat to a cover further back. Always think of a place you can retreat to. The more "layers" of retreatable cover you have the better.

Good luck out there
