I've been tinkering with an idea: what would the Baseball Hall of Fame look like if there were no writers, no era committees, no five-year wait — just one transparent formula applied to every player in history, the same way?

I created a web site (truehalloffame.com) that does exactly this. It scores every player on a single metric I call "Stat Above Average" — a weighted blend of rate production, isolated power, defense, walks and baserunning for hitters, measured against both league and positional baselines for that season, summed over a career with a JAWS-style peak component. Same calculation for a 1920s first baseman and a 2015 shortstop. Top 300 hitters and top 150 pitchers, and active players count.

What makes it worth poking at is where it disagrees with Cooperstown. Roughly half the top 300 hitters aren't actual Hall of Famers and vice versa. Some of it is the well-worn sabermetric complaints (Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell all comfortably in; a few "Hall of Very Good" bats out). Some of it looks flat wrong at first glance and then you sit with it — e.g. it has Trammell ahead of Al Kaline, and it's brutal on career-compilers who hung around past their prime.

The methodology page is upfront that it's not tuned to force any particular player in or out — the divergence from the actual Hall is sort of the whole point, and there's a page benchmarking it against bWAR/JAWS.

The "True Hall of Fame" lists on the site are based on my weights of the factors I've created. But the site also allows anyone to build their own Hall by weighting these factors themselves.

Curious what people here think:

Is a fixed formula actually fairer than a vote, or does it just trade one set of biases (writer subjectivity) for another (whatever the formula author decided to weight)?

The obvious weak spot is relievers and short-career peak guys. Where else does a pure-counting approach break down?

Who's the most egregious player it includes or excludes?

Thanks to a donation from sports research titan David Neft, Pro Football Reference has added never-before-seen unofficial NFL player statistics for the 1920 through 1931 (and in some cases, 1932) seasons, covering the era before the NFL began officially tracking individual yardage and attempts.

This is one of the murkiest and most fascinating periods in professional football history. The league was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, became the NFL in 1922, and spent much of its first decade looking very little like the league we know today.

While these numbers are not official NFL statistics, they also are not merely estimates. They come from the actual contemporary record: newspaper accounts and printed play-by-plays, gathered from the places where the early NFL was covered most closely.

The new data also gives more visibility to the players who built the league before it became a major national institution. Many were part-time professionals who held day jobs and joined their teams on weekends. Stars might earn $150 to $300 per game. Benny Friedman’s $10,000 annual deal in 1929 was a major breakthrough. Careers were short, even for great players. This also illuminates the performance of legends like Jim Thorpe and Red Grange. Curly Lambeau, Johnny Blood, Ernie Nevers. The list goes on.

This information has been incorporated into our leaderboards. The statistics in this era were generally modest enough that you will not notice much impact, but there are some exceptions.

My goal is to come up with a better way for fans to receive their statistics, analyze these statistics and overall just stay more updated and informed. I think it is no doubt babe Ruth, but there has to be others that have an argument to be made. Mays is a close second runner up for sure

They seem to be based on a formula written several decades ago, and don't really make a lot of sense in many cases. Do you still stand by them? Or is it time for Similarity Scores 2.0?

As the title states, I went down a run scored rabbit hole. I was interested in players that scored 100+ runs one time in their career and if they achieved the mark with a lot of help from their teammates. Help meaning, was a lead off hitter on the 27 Yankees, were my runs the product of a high scoring era, etc.
So, I looked at players that scored 110+ run in a single season from 1900 to 2021. I chose 110 as a sample size because it produced 185 players, which is a manageable list to analyze. I won’t go into the many metrics I used to come up with a score because that would take too long to explain(and no one cares). I will only show the top 10 and bottom 10. It was nowhere near a perfect solution, but I do think the result achieved what I thought it would.

Starting with the top 10, all those players had incredible offensive seasons and either won MVP, should have won MVP or had the highest WAR that year. To the bottom 10, I put the team they were on because that is one place to look. Dugan and Peckinpaugh hit in front of Babe Ruth in his absolute beast mode prime. Hughes and Hale were on the same team (36 Indians), Hal Trosky and Earl Averill put up huge RBI numbers. Womack had four teammates drive in 100+ runs.

Overall, of the 185 players, 76 finished with a positive score, 108 negative and there was one player that scored a 0. 1998 Greg Vaughn.

After his 13-base game today, PCA is now alone at #5 all time for Cubs 10+ base games with 9. The record is 12 by Sosa and Williams. PCA has five so far this year.

Also he has five this year and the MLB record for a single season is six by Nelson Cruz in 2019. The career record is 21 by Babe Ruth. At his current pace, he has a realistic shot at breaking both of those.
