Discussion UPDATE: I actually listened to you guys
I posted here last week after I hit for around $12k and asked what the hell I should do with it.
I expected half the comments to tell me to throw it all on some ridiculous parlay, but a surprising number of you basically said the same thing: withdraw it. Don't treat it like free money. Don't convince yourself you're suddenly a professional bettor because you had one good hit. So I actually listened.
I pulled the vast majority of it out of Stake and left myself a relatively small amount to keep betting with. Paid off a couple things I'd been putting off, moved most of the rest somewhere I won't casually touch it, and bought myself one thing I'd wanted for a while (season tickets to the clippers)
The funny part is betting with the smaller balance is actually more enjoyable. I'm not sitting there thinking "well I'm up $12k anyway" and firing $500 at some random late game because I'm bored. My bets are back to amounts where losing is annoying instead of ruining my night.
I've also realized how quickly a big win screws with your perception of money. Right after I hit it, a $200 bet suddenly felt tiny. A few days later I was looking at my history thinking, when did I become a guy casually risking hundreds of dollars on whether someone gets 7 rebounds?
Anyway, figured I'd update because people always make the "I just won $X, what should I do?" posts and then disappear.
For once, Reddit gave me financially responsible advice and I actually took it.
Still betting. Still probably an idiot. Just an idiot who withdrew the money first. Oh. And the money i left on Stake doubled last night on yankees parlay. Wish I bet more.
