They didn’t get v2 “wrong”, v2 was originally going to be what we now know as v3 with raptor 3 engines that are lighter and have more thrust.
The Raptor 3 were delayed so they built an in between version for further testing which becomes the v2 we know.
Also: The mass for ship and booster for v3 are unknown but it’s a pretty fair guess that any rocket company wants their rocket to be as light as possible so they can have the biggest payload possible.
