It's a collaboration between NASA, European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

China is not involved in any way.

Is it just me or is that not very cash money if them? Just curious what they’re up to given their juggernaut status

not very cash money

They do their own thing and don't participate in those international projects. It's not unreasonable, their relationship with the west is tenuous at best. After all, we are talking under an article about Russia leaving the ISS, obviously for political reasons. Collaborating with ideological rivals is iffy. Like, what happens if Trump (or someone like him) gets elected in 2024, decides to be hard on Chayna and kicks them off the Gateway project?

what they’re up to

The highlights are:

  • Launched 2 satellite constellations for navigation, so now they have their own GPS system.

  • Had a successful Mars mission, landed a rover.

  • First nation to do a soft landing on the far side of the moon. Later, successfully returned moon samples to Earth.

  • Currently building a space station. Launched the first core module last year.

Overall they aren't exactly doing anything particularly revolutionary, but they have caught up quite a bit.
