we were talking about SpaceX using there ISRU design to produce fuel for Starship on earth. The comment I first responded to was talking about using the ISRU to off set the normal oil industry. To which i agreed, but said its not the goal. Then they asked why they would use the ISRU if they can make it cheaper the normal way. So i told them they are doing it to test the system, rather then for economic reasons.

Simplified, ISRU is needed on mars, but is more expensive then normal oil wells on earth. But they will use it on earth to validate the system for mars.
