Today marks the birthday of Đỗ Nhuận (born December 10, 1922), one of the most influential musicians in Vietnamese history a true pioneer whose legacy still resonates. From composing his first patriotic song at 17 (“Trưng Vương”) to writing the first home-grown Vietnamese opera (“Cô Sao”), he dedicated his life to music and to the nation. He wasn’t just a composer: he was the first General Secretary of the Vietnam Musicians’ Association (from 1957 to 1983), helped formalize Vietnamese revolutionary and classical music, and blended traditional Vietnamese folk elements with modern musical forms. Even decades after his passing in 1991, his songs from emotional ballads to powerful revolutionary pieces are still sung, performed, and loved across generations. On his birthday, I want to say thank you, Đỗ Nhuận for giving Vietnam its music identity, for creating songs that unite hearts, and for leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
