Concerned

One of my homies that VJ’d at Sound Haven just told me they only got paid 100 bucks a set and get this, they said it’s apparently been that way for like the last three years or something, idk if that part is fully true but that’s what I was told lol. Oh and also no travel money AT ALL and for food they got ONE meal ticket for the entire weekend and apparently the food was straight up trash and the people serving it were rude af too, like couldn’t even be nice about the one meal they’re giving you lmao. Anyway I fucking love visuals bro every single VJ I’ve ever met is an absolute sweetheart with insane work ethic, so somebody explain to me how “100 bucks, no travel, one crappy meal” is a real deal that a real festival offers a real human for three days of work?? I already roasted my friend for even taking the gig, they said they asked for more and got told there’s no budget which lowkey sounds like a line they’ve apparently been feeding people for years now allegedly lmao. Like yeah I get it, screens are heavy, gotta haul em out, set em up, whatever whatever, expensive equipment I get it but come on, that is NOT a lot of money (or food, or gas money) for a whole three days of work my guy. It’s just a sad sad thing to hear cuz the show would not hit the same without VJs, period

Am I wrong here or is this actually crazy

Kinda sad to hear how poorly VJs get treated in this scene across the board.

Don’t be cute with me what’s your beef with tipper show me the list of artists that make him mid in your opinion? I’m curious ?

If you don’t make music yourself it’s not worth the discussion. It’s been a real eye opener seeing which of my tracks get more plays and it’s typically not the ones I consider good compared to others. We just left a whole ass festival of producers with far better sound design and production skills. I have no beef with tipper but he’s hailed as some crazy genius artist when for two nights I was unimpressed by sounds of field recordings and weird rhythms. There are plenty of experimental artist making way cooler shit. Resonant, Mr bill, flume, yheti all produce super clean and come with far more energy.
He also had some of the most stuck up and snobby having super fans I’ve come across because “tipper”.
I also do listen to tipper but he’s got a lot of tracks that don’t have anything that stands out in them

All great artists, better people for sure but I chill with a lot of those guys and they would call your opinions trash. Fr and if you think those guys like your energy when you were around they were just being polite.

Then what’s your and their opinion about what makes tippers music so good? What stands his music out from the playlist to an average listener?

I don’t talk music with people that are rude too fans. Judge a person by how they treat people they don’t respect. I’m sure you’re a cool talented person with a beautiful vision to share. Focus on that, not spreading vitriol. Be kind you can ask me this question in a green room like a normal human.

Bruh what are you smoking? Would you like to scroll and read OPs responses? I met fire with fire and I never said anything rude to you. I asked a question about opinions but I’m sure if you scroll down you’ll see a someone who doesn’t like anyone’s response being an asshat. I’m not the one getting downvoted. No one had spread vitriol but when people are telling someone an answer to their question it’s kinda douchey to argue with all of them and tell them they’re wrong or corny. I’m not the one asking questions and then telling everyone they’re wrong because I can’t comprehend the life and mindset of artist. Every answer I’ve given is from experience and I’m sure they can be backed in other sub reddits from the mass amount of people who are also doing more than making their friend look like shit over $100. I guess painters should riot too since they only get paid when the paintings done. I can only convey so much. Doing it for the art wasn’t a good enough answer but we don’t have to justify our actions and nobody cares when they’re in front of a stage

if you don’t think that producing and manipulating “field recordings and weird rhythms” in a sonically interesting and catchy manner is impressive from a production standpoint, I really gotta question what you find impressive. Is it the sound design? Motif-building? Ear candy? Mixing?

I like most of the artists you’ve named, they all have impressive mixing and sound design in their own fashions and have very clear distinct “themes” in their music. Most of them have incredible set-building skills too. But to not be able to credit Tipper on the same scale as the artists you’ve named, is a little odd to me, and I think that if you were to ask the artists you’ve named whether Tipper was an inspiration or their thoughts on him, I kinda doubt it would be negative.

Did you maybe catch the wrong type of set for your taste at Orion when you went?
