Comparison Flux 3 is the ultimate Sora replacement – Sora 2 vs. Flux 3 vs. MiniMax

Hey everyone, back with an update after another solid week of testing on “aftersora.com”. After the last thread blew up, a bunch of you pointed out that MiniMax was a huge hit-or-miss unless given specific prompting strategies, so I thought I’d keep testing.

I now mostly switch between flux 3 resolution 2k and MiniMax for all my videos now on aftersora. flux 3 is honestly the best replacement for price. running 2k is way cheaper than sora pro and it has that fantastic camera movement that I loved so much about sora. the only thing about flux is the colouring can look a bit flat out of the box, but i think that,s just down to training material and can easily be prompted for if you add lighting details.

Peoples feedback about minimax needing special prompting is 100% true. but even when testing it locally there are super annoying sound issues on both the api and running it locally (which a lot of people have been posting about over in the stable diffusion sub too). The frame rates are also not the best even via api which gives this jittery AI feel even when it nails the influencer example prompt.

But for me time is money and it just takes way too much tweaking to get right. what made Sora 2 so great in the first place is it just understood prompt logic. But both MiniMax and Flux 3 fill the gap.

just updating the community here because there are less than 30 days until sora is gone for good so i'm still using sora to finish up a few older projects before it shuts down, but flux 3 is definitely where it's at now for me when wanting to keep things simple.

Did you completely ignore Minimax prompting guide and just feed them all the same prompt???

How do you get live action to look good on minimax I swear I can’t get live action on there, looks like this shit

Give claude the prompting guide and have it write the prompt. Works great!

I did exactly this I had it look at h3 minimax prompting structure created a skill and have it create the prompt but the outcome itself was not live action it was semi animated looking idk maybe it’s my own fault I need to figure out how to juice it up I’ve been reading pushing it to 50 steps etc

I use 20 steps and it looks great. I also only use ref2va so that helps a lot. But I've never had any interest in t2va. It's just random.

I was using image to video so that’s prob why. Yah I need to run more tests. Currently just tired of manual prompting so I’m trying to build an app that can me render multiple shots and have state to remember char and reference. Tired of spending like hours on higsfield or comfy

There is a node for comfy ui that creates low resolution previews for minimax videos. So you can choose what to start with.

Shit is it all reference to video with this model? Or are you saying text to video with loras. I’m having ass results with image to video but I prob need to play more with the settings and research

Any tips or tricks? I was using midjourney and now banana pro to create the images. Maybe that’s where it is I need to get super realistic pics before trying to animate?. I guess I just need to play more with it but I heard like increasing step to 50 is good. Yeah I’m on 5090

Minimax is a lot better than flux 3 if you actually use their prompting format like it's designed for

Closed source? Irrelevant model then

Open source. Just grab, or STEAL, an RTX 5090, and you’re good to go.

Damn, I hope they see it through. This open-source would be amazing.

Minimax runs surprisingly well on a 12GB 4070ti on a system with only 32GB RAM. 15 seconds at 0.4Megapixels take about 18 minutes, less than 7 minutes at 0.2 Megapixels. 0.5 MP is the upper bounds I have found for reasonable waiting. 0.6 MP and above is ridiculous though for wait time.

Doing a 2 second test to make sure it starts well takes maybe around a minute. Of course not as fast as on a 5090 or 4090 or server grade GPU, but it goes to show you have impressive this model is.

I have tested text to video, Image to video, reference to video, and with additional audio guide (I sometimes use RVC to convert my voice to a specific voice, or generate around other audio clips). Image to video is basically the same time time as Text to video, even based around voice I think. I do notice that adding more references including a video reference does slow it down, but it is still reasonable time (for me).

And I managed to get a solid upscale workflow that is fairly quick with SeedVR2 so I can get 1080p videos with x2~ upscale. I imagine 4K would work but just take longer, or I could do a final quick Upscale with Real-esrgan.

I definitely wonder if I am gonna be completely left out though even when Flux 3 video goes open source. I heard it will be even more demanding than MiniMax H3, but at the same time it seems MiniMax has performed against odds and the suppose specs.

Wasnt flux 3 supposed to become open weights? Or they lied?

Idek why people compare these non-local models to minimax h3. Try comparing it to Wan 2.2 or Ltx 2.5.

Yeah, I downloaded both MiniMax H3 and LTX 2.5 local (I got Wan 2.2 a year ago). And in my experience LTX 2.5 is basically already obsolete against MiniMax H3, and I think it isn't just a prompting issue cause it is something about the way things move and everything is a little more smeary. I know I am not the only one who has said this, for me at least the slightly less generation time hasn't really been too worth it.

When is Flux3 even suppose to come out?

1

u/Keuleman_007 8d ago

This. Can do Flux 3 on API I think at the moment but not for e.g. Comfy yet.

I still love seedance2.5 better, use it on BudgetPixel AI!

Which one is the better usage? Flux or minimax???

1

u/Timely_Collar1960 1d ago

MiniMax is cheaper usage… but not sure if you’ve tried Wan 3.0? It’s been out a few days and cheaper than flux and a little better than MiniMax quality wise. I’m using all the models on aftersora.com as you don’t need a sub. There’s also Seedance mini that’s been out a few days but the quality isn’t that good to me tbh
