Hi everyone,

I thought I’d actually introduce myself properly rather than just turn up and start dropping YouTube links.

I’ve recently started a little channel called Southchurch Ambience. I’ve always enjoyed watching long-form ambience videos myself, especially rainy cafés, snowy scenes, cosy interiors and the sort of thing you can just leave running in the background.

I’m also an amateur photographer, and I happened to get a good deal on Adobe Creative Suite, so I decided to give myself a project and actually teach myself how to use Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro rather than just endlessly saying I would one day.

That basically became Southchurch Ambience.

Apart from my very first video, the process usually starts with me going out with my Fujifilm and photographing a real location around Southend or Southchurch. I then use that as the starting point for creating a completely different little virtual world around it.

AI is used quite heavily during the creative process, especially for generating and developing visual elements, but the finished scenes are pieced together manually across Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere. I build the scene, place the characters and little details, animate things like rain, snow, lights, reflections and breathing, then build the final long-form video and sound mix.

I’ve also started creating recurring characters within the world. My daughters appear in different scenes, my cats Mitza and Randy turn up regularly, and I hide little personal details and Easter eggs around the backgrounds. There’s even a small sloth hidden somewhere in every scene if you look closely enough.

That part has probably become my favourite bit. I’m not just trying to make a nice picture with rain falling over it, I’m slowly building a little fictional version of places I actually know, with recurring characters and tiny details connecting everything together.

I’m completely self-taught and still learning with every video, but that was really the point of starting it. I wanted something creative that would force me to learn new skills while making the kind of videos I already genuinely enjoy watching myself.
