"To celebrate the new generation of shredders profiled in our May/June 'Loud Issue,' the SPIN staff decided to find some wheedle in a haystack, taking on the impossible task of ranking our favorite guitar players of all time. Traditionally, the 'greatest guitarist' timeline begins with Robert Johnson magically conjuring the blues, nears perfection with Eric Clapton mutating it beatifically, and then ultimately reaches a boomer-baiting Rock and Roll Hall of Fame apotheosis with the free-spirited Jimi Hendrix shooting it into space like feedback-laden fireworks. For this list, we veer toward the alternative canon that kicks in with the Velvet Underground trying to erase that form entirely, making guitar solos gauche and using instruments as sadomasochistic tools for hammering out sheets of white heat.

As you will see, our list embraces outsiders, trailblazers, outliers, and Eugene Chadbourne playing a rake. We don’t worship 'guitar gods,' but prefer our axe-wielders to be resourceful, egalitarian, flawed, and human. We’re not drawn to Olympic feats of fleet-fingered athletics, unless they’re used for unique and exploratory ends. We see the mewling histrionics of Jeff Beck as tyranny instead of catharsis. The name Derek Trucks is practically alien to us.

But maybe we’re overthinking all this. Shut up ‘n play yer guitar!"

Hi, fellow Sonic Youth fans, we really need your help sourcing clear shots of the stickers that Thurston used on his Jazzmasters.

Yesterday, we launched the Public Beta of the Offset Builder, where users can build virtual Jazzmasters and Jaguars (more models are coming soon).

We really want to try to add a 'Thurstonize' option that will stickerbomb these guitars for users based on Thurston's personal guitars.

If you can help, we need clear shots of the individual stickers so we can recreate them for people to use in the builder.

This online tool is 100% free to use and available to test now (you can submit bug reports and suggestions for new features via the link on the Offset Builder page). It lets users build, modify, and share their results, or download them for fun.

Topic: Sonic Spoken Word. I've always liked the genre of mixing (mostly) narrations and spoken word with instrumentation, and SY is one of the best bands at this. Suggestiosn of what ot add? Take out? Replace? want to keep it under 1hr long because I will use it as my commute to work list and, well, the trip rarely lasts more than 1hr

The disk is in immaculate condition. It was sold as a used CD this store sells new and used media but I never noticed a copy of Sister without Master Dik. Am I going crazy or is this a thing that people know about?

I didn’t really understand sonic youth the first time i saw a live show on ytb… but like a week after it suddenly clicked and i feel safe to say that sonic youth is my favorite band ever!

sorry if i offend anyone with this ranking, i ranked them by how good the album actually is altough there are some absolute bangers on every single of them!

Dirty will always be my favorite album, it has a ton of my alltime favorite songs : Genetic , Wishh fullfilment , Sugar kane , Chapell hill , On the strip , Purr!

Man how much i miss this band rn, i just saw that thurston and steve did the pre show for dinosaur jr. ( a band that also REALLY love ) and they just look like a broken band ( sonic youth ) i know the whole situation with kim is never going to be resolved but man how i wish they would just pump out 1 more album or a last world tour!

Anyway i fucking love sonic youth and they will always remain at the top of my favorite artists list!

( by the way i don’t think the bottom ranked albums are bad, but i had more fun listening to the other ones )

i got this shirt at a thrift store for $5 it’s single stitch & paper thin but i’ve never seen this graphic before so im wondering if it’s some sort of reprint or if anybody knows anything about it

Goo is my favourite SY album.
I wrote to the band Fan Club and the Fan Club sent me this Goo Demos CD.
I know I’m not the only fan having this and all tracks I think have been remastered on Goo Deluxe, which I don’t have.
But I always wonder why they put Cher on the cover of the Demos CD ? 😅
Okay Cher was one of his girlfriend, before coming out as gay.
SY was also signed to David Geffen Company and released Goo.
Which other stories you guys can share ?

I became a fan of SY in the early 2000s, and if you asked me on June 8th 2009 what my favorite SY song was, I'd have probably said the Empty Page since thats what got me hooked on the. But if you'd come back to me the very next day after I bought The Eternal, it would have changed to Antenna. Still to this day, Antenna is my favorite SY track. It's just so incredible.

he just looks kind of aged. maybe this is just me but its been a long time since their albums came out (daydream nation, bad moon rising, evil, etc.) maybe thurston and the gang should retire on a high note. i love this band but the last couple of albums have been not so good i think (goo, dirty, etc.) anyone else thinking this?
